From the Desk of Deacon Terry The Most Holy Trinity June 16, 2019

One challenge we have in discussing the Trinity is that we’ve been given so many images and metaphors for it. For example, it’s been said that St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leafed clover, to teach the natives about Trinity. But of course, God is more than three leaves, and each “person of the Trinity” has a more dy-namic relationship than leaves on a shamrock.

Some church fathers used the image of the sun for the Trinity, saying that the Father was like the sun itself, the Son the light, and the Spirit the heat. All three are in dynamic relations, but the sun itself is primary.

This is a better image than a shamrock but ex-presses the three persons as inanimate objects. Sometimes similar happens when modern think-ers imagine the Trinity as the three modes of water in a liquid, solid, and gaseous state, but all at once!

The many images of Trinity and each of them incomplete in one way or another contribute to a fundamental challenge in discussing Trinity. Ultimately, it is best to go back to a Scripture itself, and let that inform our understanding, which we do today by reading from the Gospel of John.

God Bless you hearts!!

AD LIMINA!Bishop Peter Libasci and all New England Bishops will be making their Ad Limina Visits to the Holy Father in Rome this Fall. Every 5 years Bishops meet with the Pope to give an account of their Church, the number of practicing Catholics, sacramental numbers for Baptism Confirmation Eucharist, RCIA, organizations, ministries and the general health of parishes. Our old census sug-gested 1300 family households at St. Joseph’s. However, the more accurate figure is 700 individuals who attend weekly, so we may not qualify for a fulltime priest or 4 Masses much longer considering the shortage of clergy in 3 years. We are doing our best to provide responsible stewardship with what we receive and rely on volunteers to make this a financially solvent church and provide vi-brant Catholic ministries.!

PRAYER SHAWLS!Do you know someone who is experiencing a particularly dif-ficult time and in need of pray-er? Someone suffering from a serious illness or experiencing a loss? The comfort of a prayer shawl may be a perfect thoughtful gift of warmth and support. The makers of these special, handknit shawls pray

before the shawl is made, pray while working on the shawl, and pray after it is finished. Prayers that accompa-ny the shawls ask God to help renew the body as well as the spirit. They ask him to restore the recipient to hope, strength, and healing. If you would like a shawl or have a desire to join in the making of these shawl, call Pauline 3951862.!

MARY GARDEN !

Did you know that certain flowers and herbs are identified honoring Mary? “They called her “Flower of Flowers,” and named plants after her.” https://www.franciscanmedia.org/honoringmaryinyourgarden/ If you travel back roads of Ireland, you will find small roadside grottos carved out of a small nook in a wall hon-oring her. Gardens, whether big, small, patio planter or indoor flower pots, can contain these plants designed to allow meditation and contemplation of Jesus, Mary and our Lord’s life. Throughout the summer months a Mary Garden is displayed on the parish hall bulletin board. May-be you may want to create one of your own? Information on over 100 flowers, herbs and their religious meanings can be found at https://www.fisheaters.com/marygardens.html by scrolling towards the bottom of the page.!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP !The Most Holy Trinity !

!

The Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. That oneness is mirrored for us in the Holy Trinity: one God in three Persons. We are a diverse community with different backgrounds, cul-tures, realities, and gifts, but we are truly one. Unfortunately, we too often forget this and function as a fractioned body. We needlessly compete against one another, judge one another as opposed to help, and sit silent when our brothers and sisters call out for help.!!!

When we take seriously our stewardship way of life, we see our lives as not truly belonging to ourselves. We want to offer our very existence to God and the Body of Christ. If we find that we are resistant to that fullness of generosity, or we begin to use our gifts in a way that fractures community, we then actively work in contrast to this mark of the Church.!!!

The Church that was established by Jesus and fortified by the institution of the sacraments cannot be destroyed and deprived of Her four marks. The human element may be strained and injured, but not even the gates of hell will prevail against this institution alive in the Spirit. Our actions can either bear witness to that reality or it can bring offense. Let us pray that enough of us will choose the holy way so all the world may see that God is real, Jesus is alive, and we are ONE.!!!
