school history

Archbishop Mitty High School was the first Archdiocesan high school in the Santa Clara Valley. The school was named for the late Archbishop John Joseph Mitty, the fourth Archbishop of San Francisco, who was both an educator and a builder. Initially, Marianist brothers and priests were given responsibility to conduct the school, which opened in the fall of 1964 with 189 male students. The school expanded its student body in 1969 and began sharing classes with Mother Butler Memorial High School and St. Lawrence Girls’ High School. Consolidation of the three schools was completed by the fall of 1972. With the creation of the Diocese of San Jose in 1981, Archbishop Mitty became the only Catholic high school owned and administrated by the Diocese.

In 1990, Bishop DuMaine appointed Timothy Brosnan as the first lay principal to continue the fine tradition of Catholic secondary education at Archbishop Mitty. Under the new administration’s leadership, the school entered a period of tremendous academic and co-curricular growth. Supporting this dramatic growth was an expansion of the campus facilities, allowing all aspects of the campus community — academic, spiritual, and co-curricular — to reach their full potential.

In 2018, Bishop Patrick McGrath and Superintendent of Schools Kathy Almazol approved the transition of Archbishop Mitty High School to a president-principal administrative model, and appointed Timothy Brosnan as the first president.

Archbishop Mitty High School is recognized today as one of the premier Catholic, college preparatory schools in the United States. With just over 1 million residents, San Jose is one of the largest metro areas in the U.S. and the largest in the Bay Area, having quietly surpassed San Francisco. San Jose lies in the heart of Silicon Valley, 45 miles south of San Francisco, and 15 miles from Palo Alto and Stanford University. This vibrant, diverse city offers close-knit neighborhoods, a Mediterranean climate, and a high quality of life. In its evolution from Spanish pueblo to technology hub, San Jose has been influenced by a

variety of cultures. Many of the area’s neighborhoods have a rich Latino or Asian influence. Central/South American and Vietnamese enclaves are found throughout the metro area, as is a Japantown with 125 years of history. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the city among the best places to live in the nation.

The San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose provides a gathering space for foodies who come to stock up on produce from local farms. For a different type of shopping, residents head to Santana Row in West San Jose, which has upscale shops and boutiques. Professional sports fans root for the Sharks (hockey) at the SAP Center (“the Shark Tank” to locals) and the Earthquakes (soccer) at Avaya Stadium. For football, San Joseans head to the state-of-the-art Levi’s Stadium in neighboring Santa Clara, now home to the San Francisco 49ers.

The city also offers access to a wide range of cultural activities and access to the outdoors. Cradled by the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range, with the Pacific shore close beyond, San Jose offers a prime environment for outdoorsy residents, with its proximity to the ocean, the Sierra Nevada and the vineyards – not to mention about 300 sunny days a year.

Also, camping and hiking in Yosemite National Park, as well as skiing and watersports in Lake Tahoe, are just a few hours’ drive away. For more relaxing escapes, Napa Valley wine country is less than two hours away by car, and the Santa Cruz beaches are a 45-minute drive. And for technology enthusiasts, The Tech Museum of Innovation offers hundreds of family-friendly interactive exhibits devoted to science and technology.

opportunities, And chAllenges

Following 30 years of outstanding leadership by the current president, the community is excited to embrace new opportunities. The school is rock solid in every important aspect and seeks a faith-filled leader who will appreciate the unique opportunity of leading a premier Catholic institution. Mitty appreciates its critical role as an educational ministry of the Church while continually seeking new ways of growing its prominence and raising its profile as a high performing, independent college preparatory institution.

The next President should be mindful of the following opportunities and challenges:

• This is a time of transition for Mitty as well as the Diocese of San Jose. Bishop Cantu joined the Diocese just over a year ago, and a new Superintendent of Catholic Schools has also been recruited within the past year.

• The Mitty leadership team is outstanding, having grown into the current state under the same President for many years. Building an empowering team and working collaboratively and with accountability will be an opportunity for the next President.

• The demand for admissions into Mitty is great and growing – among Catholic and non-Catholic families alike. Mitty prides itself on its Catholic values and traditions as well as its welcoming and inclusive culture. Maintaining the Catholic identity and high performing expectations of the school while balancing the many competing interests will continue to be an opportunity for the school’s leadership and governance.

• Silicon Valley is an expensive place to live and raise a family. Because of this, recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and staff will continue to be an important challenge. The school is committed to maintaining a reasonably accessible tuition structure to enable access for families

who seek this unique experience for their children. The next President will be expected to focus on raising the funds needed to achieve these critically important objectives.

• In 2019, a bold and ambitious strategic plan was developed, focused on four key priorities: faculty and staff retention, accessibility to Catholic education, student wellness, and a timely facilities plan. The next President will have an opportunity to work with the Board, administration, and faculty to address these priorities.

desired QuAlities And QuAlificAtions

The next President will need to be a strategic thinker who is committed to excellence and can lead the school today and into the future; someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who can inspire the community and create demand for the unique gifts of an Archbishop Mitty High School education. Understanding the powerful core elements of the Archbishop Mitty value proposition and differentiating the school from competitive alternatives will be critical for the school going forward.

The school operates in the President/Principal Leadership Model. In this increasingly popular leadership structure, the Principal is responsible for day-to-day academic operations, reporting to the President who functions as the chief executive officer and outward facing “institution builder.” The President, supported functionally by the Administrative Council, maintains all aspects of the school’s general operations, including financial management, institutional management, enrollment activities and facilities management. To operate effectively and achieve the expected synergies, the President needs to be a collaborative and decisive leader, embracing and promoting the key roles of the Principal and others on the leadership team while setting the agenda, raising the profile of the school in the community, and holding people accountable. The next President should demonstrate mentoring skills that provide opportunities for staff development.

To qualify for this outstanding opportunity, the next President will need to be a practicing Catholic with proven leadership experience. The Board and Bishop recognize that great leaders often grow in place and thereby welcome candidates who are promising “rising stars” or “emergent leaders” with outstanding leadership qualities who are ready to step up and take this outstanding school to new horizons. The Board and Bishop also welcome candidates from other Catholic or independent schools and dioceses, as well as accomplished individuals from other mission-critical career venues such as higher education and non-profit entities.

In particular, the next President should embody the following qualities and characteristics:

• A charismatic and highly relational leader who is accessible and visible in the life of the school.• A faith-filled practicing Catholic who will embody and promote the Catholic identity of the school

and model those values in his/her daily practice.• A leader who embraces the core value of continuing to make the school a place that is open,

accessible and welcoming to all members of the community, aligning with the school’s aim to reflect the community in which it resides; a proponent of a diverse student body, leadership team and faculty.

• An effective and engaging communicator in both public forums and private meetings.• A director of fundraising activities including endowment, annual and capital giving to meet the

present and future needs of the school; overseeing the cultivation of potential donors as well as the solicitation of grants and donations from supporters of the school.

While knowledge of secondary education and school operations is preferred, other qualities and experiences are also valued, especially visionary, entrepreneurial leadership and the ability to inspire, lead a high performing team, and create demand for the extraordinary gifts of an Archbishop Mitty High School education. This is one of the finest Catholic school leadership opportunities in the country.
