Thirty-five years ago, an idea was born – an idea that local Lutheran churches should establish a home for the elderly.

In early 1971, seventy-six people from a mix of churches from American Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church in America, and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod attended a meeting to explore the level of interest in such a project. They shared a common vision: the home for the area’s elderly would be not-for-profit and function under a Christian philosophy.

Committees from this preliminary group researched the potential for such a facility. From their efforts and commitment, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Home and Retirement Center was incorporated on January 3, 1972.

Recognizing that such an extensive venture requires significant financial backing, the Lutheran Women’s League (LWL) presented a check for $10,000 to the original board. The check represented 32 years of gifts and bequests from members of the LWL. At the presentation, Mrs. Norman Niswonger, president of the LWL, stressed that “we must have

Between 1972 and 1974, several alternatives were explored. The process culminated in the purchase of a 120-bed nursing facility and 54 independent apartments in Niles, providing the first location for

Message froM the executive DirectorMessage froM the executive Director

When I think back to when I entered the world of long-term care over 30 years ago, I am amazed by the changes that have occurred. Residents’ physical and mental needs have increased dramatically, along with the knowledge and skills of the staff who serve them. As time has passed, long-term care facilities have changed from being “rest homes” to skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers. Government regulation has continued to makelong-term care facilities evolve into medical models of service delivery, causing the industry to approach resident care in an “assembly line” fashion to meet regulations and increase efficiency. Examples include items like meal times for residents being done all at once and sleeping patterns being conformed to the facility’s schedules. Coupled with these demands are reimbursement changes that have caused our systems of care delivery to become regimented. To counter this move toward regimentation, we are instituting a new initiative under the direction of Tamara Salvino and her Howland nursing staff: “Person-Centered Care” (which is explained on page 4). The premise encompasses adapting the facility’s routine to best meet every individual resident’s needs as much as possible. This program’s implementation will be a major challenge to us because it requires “rethinking” all of the systems most long-term care facilities use while keeping within the regimented system of rules handed down by the regulatory agencies. It will take years to fully implement, but we are confident that our residents, families, and staff will be up to this new challenge.

continued from front pageCenter. Five years later, a second Trumbull County location, Shepherd of the Valley-Howland, was built, and 40 nursing beds transferred from Niles, creating a complete continuum of care services.

In addition to the new communities, Shepherd’s Foundation, which functions as the benevolent support arm of the organization, was founded in 1994, and in 1997, Shepherd of the Valley Home Health Care was created to meet the expanding demand for services provided in the home.

This past year, recognizing that a lack of affordable housing continues to be a major issue facing seniors on fixed incomes, Shepherd of the Valley entered into a partnership, Lutheran Housing Services of Howland, with Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio, and St. Luke Lutheran Community. In November, ground was broken for The Manor at Howland Glen, a 50 apartment affordable housing community for seniors made possible through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

In the past 35 years, Shepherd has grown from that one community in Niles, employing approximately 120 and caring for 170 seniors, to a system of four retirement communities in two counties employing more than 600 individuals and providing a place more than 700 seniors call home. In addition, the corporate location, built in 2005, provides space for Shepherd of the Valley Home Health Services, Shepherd’s Foundation, staff training, administration offices, marketing and community relations, purchasing, accounting offices, meeting rooms and storage.

“As we celebrate our 35th anniversary in 2007, Shepherd of the Valley continues to meet the needs of the ever increasing population of seniors in the region by offering quality programs and services,” stated Donald Kacmar, Executive Director. “We maintain our high level of service through the prudent management of our resources, even in a time when government resources are dwindling.”

True to the ideals of the original board, Shepherd of the Valley remains a Christian not-for-profit entity, dedicated to providing the finest quality care to the community through an integrated continuum of services. Supported by Shepherd’s Foundation, Shepherd of the Valley continues to meet challenges and opportunities head on.

HOWLAND FORGES A NEW PATH

54

By Tamara Salvino, LNHA, AssociateDirector, SOV-Howland

When you think of a nursing home (other than Shepherd, of course!) what words come to mind? Institutional? Hospital-like? Cold and sterile? Now, think of your own home. What words describe it? Warm and inviting? Relaxing? Cozy? …welcoming.

We want the second list to be the one you think of when you think of a Shepherd of the Valley

nursing home. To make that happen, we are implementing new concepts: “culture change” and “person-centered care.”

Culture change in nursing homes involves movement away from the traditional institutional

model of care revolving around the medical care of the resident, toward a new model that seeks to make the physical surroundings reflect “home.” The goal is to focus on the person rather than his or her condition.

Person-centered care (PCC) is a philosophical approach that changes the facility from an institutional based setting to a “homelike” one. PCC promotes care that honors and respects the voice of elders and those working closest with them. Many decisions, such as when to get up or go to bed, what time to eat, and when to take showers, are made by the resident, rather than fitting into a staff schedule. Finally, PCC creates an environment where staff treats their residents like family.

This year, Shepherd of the Valley will experience culture change as we move toward person-centered care.…with Shepherd of the Valley-Howland leading the way as the pilot site for this new adventure.

At Shepherd, our residents come first and we are proud of the relationships our staff and residents form. In our publications we confidently invite people to “Make your home with us.” PCC is the next logical step in our evolution into the next home you want to have.

More information about Person-Centered Care is available at the Ohio Person-Centered Care Coalition website (www.centeredcare.org) or at SOV-Howland.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF Shepherd staff are known to be caring and giving. As well as caring for residents, staff is encouraged to give back through service to the community. …and serve we do! We participate in Relay for Life, the Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and both the Alzheimer Association and Alzheimer’s Resource and Referral Network Memory Walks. We have Girl and Boy Scout troop leaders, religion class teachers, and at Christmas, we wrap presents at Eastwood Mall for the Salvation Army and we ‘Share the Spirit’ with elderly shut-ins. We are also members of service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis, where several staff hold leadership positions, and we also serve on the Regional Chamber Board. The following is a list of some of the volunteer work in which the Shepherd of the Valley staffparticipate. It is by no means comprehensive. Many, many more of our staff are involved withorganizations than are listed here: • Alzheimer’s Association Community Network Committee• American Red Cross Northern Columbiana County Board• Canfield Business Women• Hospice of the Valley Professional Advisory Board• Kiwanis Clubs: Boardman (Chris Bierdeman, Pres.), Niles and Warren• Niles Chamber of Commerce Board• Niles School Bond Campaign Committee (Rich Limongi, Chairman)• Rotary Clubs: Niles (Jeri Wilson, Pres.), Warren, Canfield, and Boardman• St. George Church Finance Committee• Senior Resource Alliance• Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation PR Committee• Volunteer Services Agency Board• Warren Christian Women’s Association• Yng. - Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce Board Special recognition goes to Jeri Wilson who was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the Niles Rotary Club in recognition of her service to the organization.

The Mahoning Valley has had its share of triumph and tragedy. The constant factor, through it all, has been the people who live and work here. A number ofcommunity awards are presented for various reasons;however, none of them recognizes the elders in our society. On October 5, 2006, nearly 225 community and business members gathered for the second annual Valley Legacy Awards Luncheon at the Holiday Inn Metroplex in Girard. As well as honoring civic-minded seniors for their dedication to the Mahoning Valley, the Valley Legacy Awards also recognize individuals for their senior advocacy efforts. Ode Aduma presided over the afternoon’s activities, presenting Outstanding Senior Awards to Carolyn Andrews, Warren, Kay Fisher, Warren, George “Gay” and Margaret Krok, Niles, and John Weed Powers, Esq., Poland, with the Outstanding Advocate Award going to the Alzheimer’s Assistance and Referral Network’s Executive Director, Dorothy Barto. For additional information on the recipients, visit our website, www.shepherdofthevalley.com, and click on Valley Legacy Awards. “The nominations received for our two award categories were all extraordinary people. They exemplified the deep commitment to community that often seems so lacking today. Meeting these people has been truly inspirational,” stated Lynn Miller, Shepherd of the Valley’s Corporate Marketing Director. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to the award recipients. Thank you for the generous support from the community, sponsors, and judges in making the Valley Legacy Awards such a success.

GrOUNDBrEAkING HELD fOr THE MANOr AT HOWLAND GLENDespite chilly temperatures on Friday, November 3, the atmosphere was warm as representatives held a

groundbreaking ceremony for The Manor at Howland Glen.Operated by Lutheran Housing Services of Howland,

which is a partnership between Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Retirement Services, Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio (Columbus), and St. Luke Lutheran Community (North Canton), The Manor at Howland Glen will offer attractive, safe, comfortable, and affordable housing for people, age 62 and older.

Officials from the City of Warren and Trumbull County were on hand as well, as they assisted with the project which was made possible through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Due to weather conditions, the groundbreaking was held on the front lawn of our community. The Manor will actually be located in front of our villas on North River Road, and should be completed in early 2008.

It will be a beautiful two-story structure with 50 one-bedroom apartments, a community room, library, arts and crafts studio, and lounges. Rental assistance will be available for qualified individuals, based on 30% of their adjusted income. For more information, contact Lutheran Social Services at 614-228-5200.

On Saturday, November 11, the family of James A. Roemer dedicated a new flagpole and granite marker in front of the main building . Pictured are Tamara Salvino - Associate Director, James Q. Roemer (Jim’s son) and his wife Patricia, Bruce Birrell and Gretchen Roemer Birrell (Jim’s sister), William F. Roemer (Jim’s son), Ron and Kay Santti (long-time family friends), and Cheryl Lewis - Foundation Director. Despite the rainy morning, many guests braved the elements to attend the ceremony and share their special memories of Jim (known as “Mr. Roemer” to many of us!). Thanks, Mr. Roemer, for blessing our lives during the five years you made Shepherd your home.

GArDEN DEDICATION AT HOWLANDGenevieve Morrow Folger came to live at

Shepherd of the Valley-Howland in September 2002 at the tender age of 106. We were privileged to partake of her wisdom, her love of nature, her smile, her faith, and her friendship for several years before she passed away in October 2004, just a few weeks before her 109th birthday.

To remember their mother, John Folger and Sara Alice “Sally” Folger Thomas established a Memorial Endowment Fund through Shepherd’s Foundation to support the garden and patio area off the first floor.

The dedication of the Genevieve Morrow Folger Memorial Garden was held on Saturday morning, September 30. Rev. Jim Brandis shared several read-ings, one by Dorothy Gurney which truly expressed Genevieve’s philosophy: “One is nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.”

A sincere “Thank You!” to the following contributors for your generous support between July 1 - December 31, 2006. (Installment pledges are listed forthe total amount paid for the entire 2006 annual giving program.) Your participationand commitment are greatly needed and appreciated. Please notify Shepherd’s Foundation if there is an error in your listing. Thanks again, and God bless.

As I look back on 2006, two areas really stand out for the Foundation. The first is the record amount of donationswe received and donated to Shepherd of the Valley. Approximately $134,150 was allocated to our sites for thefollowing needs:

OneTouch Technologie/Optimus EMR resident care software .......................................49%Benevolent Grants for residents in need ..........................................................................29%Staff Education & Staff Appreciation programs ..............................................................13%Resident Activities & Programs ..........................................................................................6%Other (Spiritual Life, Therapy Equipment) .......................................................................3%

Although we were not able to raise the entire $191,500 for the OneTouch/Optimus two-year campaign, we are extremely grateful for the generous gifts that will help reduce the amount of external funding to pay for this vital project. I extend my sincere thanks — and that of our entire staff — for your involvement to help us carry out our mission. The second area that stands out is the extraordinary response the Foundation witnessed in the number of family members and friends who made memorial donations for their loved ones. The cards and letters I received were amazing. Many left me speechless. You have no idea how wonderful it makes the staff feel when I share your kind words with them. In addition, your memorial gifts enable us to offer things we might not be able to otherwise provide for our residents. Two unique memorial projects are listed on page 6. Shepherd of the Valley will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2007. In conjunction with this special milestone, the Foundation is undertaking a number of new projects that will enhance our residents’ safety, health, and comfort. You’ll hear more about these in the coming months. Again, thank you so much for your prayers and support. God bless.

Dear Mr. Mattix, It has been seven months since my father, John Pasha, became a resident of the assisted living floor in your facility. Although it was a difficult decision for him, our family is pleased with the outcome. My husband and I were able to spend time in Ohio when we moved Dad in April. It gave us an opportunity to meet your staff and become familiar with your facility. Everyone was so friendly and kind to us. I am fortunate to have my Dad in a safe place where he is receiving very good care. Since I live so far away, I’m not able to see him very often. But, it is so reassuring to know he is in very capable hands because of your caring staff. Thanks to you and everyone at Shepherd of the Valley for being so good to my Dad. It means a lot to me. Sincerely, Karen Bowen
