Woodland Hills Residents Receive Bad Ballots
By Laura LevinskyVote. It sounds so simple.
But not this year. How and when you vote
has never been so complicated. In person on November 3rd, in person early at a specified location, mail in ballot sent through the Post Office, or mail in ballot dropped in a ballot box?
In person the day of is relatively simple, the address is on the ballot mailed to you. It presents the problem of voting during a pandemic and risking exposure to other people standing in line at a polling place.
Mailing in your ballot requires planning and timing. Not only do you have to fill out your ballot ahead of time, you have to mail it in time for it to be delivered and counted in time for Election Day. The Post Office is recommending two weeks. So your ballot needs to be in the mail by October 20th.
You have the option of dropping your completed ballot in a Drop Box at a designated site. The boxes are bolted in place, or otherwise secured, and the ballots are picked up by teams of two people so there is no question about one person hiding ballots.
Or you could vote early at a designated early voting location. You still get to vote in person, but with the number of people at the location spread out over a few days. If you love voting in person, but don’t want the line on election day, this might be an option for you. Early voting in our local area begins October 30 and ends on November 2.
You can even keep track of your ballot with a unique code that is printed right on it. Tracking your vote-by-mail ballot - when it is mailed, received, and counted - has never been easier. The California Secretary of State is now offering Where’s My Ballot? - a new way for voters to track and receive notifications on the status of their vote-by-mail
Voting Should be Simple - But Not This Year! How and Where to Vote
ballot. Powered by BallotTrax, Where’s My Ballot? lets voters know where their ballot is, and its status, every step of the way.
Just keep that code from your ballot and use it to track the ballot being received and counted. Sign-up at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov to receive automatic
email, SMS (text), or voice call notifications about your ballot.
Locations for early voting and ballot drop off include:

Westfield announced that Westfield Topanga and Fashion Square opened Wednesday to the public! Hours are Monday to Saturday 11 am to 7 pm and Sunday noon to 6 pm. Curbside pick up will continue as well but shoppers are welcome in the centers with masks on. The mall is open with 25% capacity. For more information visit www.westfield.com/topanga/stores.
The ballot box at the Woodland Hills Library.
Approximately 2,100 Woodland Hills residents received ballots in the mail that were incomplete. The faulty ballots had no section to vote for the U.S. President. The L.A. County Registrar Recorder said that those 2,100 were the only ones reported out of those mailed to the 5.6 million registered voters in the county. The Registrar said the error was probably due to the volume of November 3 election ballots mailed to all registered and active voters in California amid several other adjustments made this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A GoFundMe account has been set up in the names of Mark and Jacob Iskander, the two boys killed in Westlake Village last week. Hidden Hills resident Rebecca Grossman will go to court October 21 on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident after running down the boys at the intersection of Triunfo Canyon Rd. and Saddle Mountain Drive. Proceeds from the fund will go to a charity in the boys’ name.
Kanye Made the Ballot - Without Knowing ItHidden Hills resident Kanye West made the California
ballot - without his knowledge. No one has explained yet how West is named as the vice presidential candidate for the far-right American Independent party, whose presidential candidate is Rocky de la Fuente Guerra, who also had no clue that was happening, though he has run for president before. West announced his own candidacy for president in July but missed the deadline to file in California.

Erratum: In the last issue of this paper in Bobbi Trantafello’s obituary, we failed to mention that she was a founding member of the West Hills Neighborhood Council, which was the first NC to be formed in the entire San Fernando Valley. Trantafello served many years as their controller and treasurer. She was also extremely involved with the West Valley Playhouse.
Word on the Street --------------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling
• Isn’t it hard to understand why a cemetery can raise its burial cost and blame it on the cost of living?
• If the #2 pencil is so popular, why is it still #2?
• If man evolved from monkeys and apes - why do we still have monkeys and apes?
• All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
• Okay, hate me because we own an SUV, and I laughed at this license plate on one of the early, very very small Prius’ > “ECO TURD.”
• Need some Halloween humor? A skeleton walked into a bar and ordered a “Blood Lite!” His vampire buddy ordered a Bloody Mary.
• Ready for more corn on the macabre? Know what ghouls eat for breakfast? Scream of wheat! Okay, okay, get me for one more. Do ya’ know what the doctor gave Dracula for his cold? Coffin syrup!
• So, says a friend, if money talks, mine gets away before it can start a conversation!
They are fighting for our freedoms.
They are fighting for our right to vote.
They are fighting for freedom and the right to vote around the world.
Unless you have a family member in the military, it’s easy to forget that a world away there are people fighting for peace and justice.
That all came home to me as a good friend told me the story of her own relative, whose convoy was attacked somewhere in a foreign country. This young 22-year-old was badly hurt, airlifted out, but still cannot wait to get back “to the job.”
His job is fighting for his country. He knew the risks going in, the dangers, the possibilities.
But he did what he was sent to do, even though it may cost him his leg. He did his job to protect what’s important.
So are we doing our job?Our front page is dedicated to
how and where and when to vote. Ballots have been sent in the mail. Most have been received. Except for the snafu of the 2,100 in Woodland Hills (out of 5.6 million mailed) most people I know are looking through their ballot, trying to understand the propositions, and getting ready to vote.
That’s our job. In voting we defend our
freedoms and rights just as much as the wounded soldier did.
He took huge risks in defending life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All we have
to do is walk to the mailbox, or drop an envelope at a convenient location.
So read the voter guide, study the propositions, and mark your ballot.
Then walk it to the mailbox, drop it in a voting box, or bring it to a polling location.
Not as dangerous as facing a sniper, a grenade or enemy fire.
But just as brave.

By Janey M. RifkinNo vaccine as yet. But dozens of trials the
world over show great promise. Pharmaceutical companies inclu-ding Astra-Zeneca PLC, Pfizer Inc., and Moderna Inc. have large trials under way – all reporting positive data that could lead to a green light for U.S. use by fall.
Therein lies a great dilemma, that of prioritizing the initial supply of approved vaccines. Initial supplies of any successful coronavirus vaccines are now expected to fall short of what is needed.
High-priority groups like health care workers are certain to be in line but public health officials estimate that more than 100 million people in the U.S., including doctors and nurses, other essential workers, and nursing home residents, should get vaccinated before the general public.
However, initial supplies will cover only a fraction of the high-priority groups if a vaccine clears testing this fall. There may be 10 million to 20 million doses available at first, according to a slide presentation prepared by the federal Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. The limited initial reserve is forcing U.S. Health officials and their advisors to make hard choices about who should get vaccinated first.

to kick in next year. The U.S. hasn’t settled on a plan for distribution. The Food and Drug Administration may specify which groups get priority if it grants an emergency use authorization for a vaccine.
High-risk populations, also on priority lists for consideration probably on the second supply, may include older adults and those individuals with heart conditions and other health risks.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of our lives, from spending time with friends and family to schooling, grocery shopping, and sporting events. But one thing hasn’t changed…the importance of taking care of your health and well-being.
Dr. Ronald Tang, MD, an Oncologist at Dignity Health – Northridge Hospital Medical Center’s Dorothy Leavey Cancer Center, shares the importance of routine preventative health screenings to early detection of abnormalities. “Although we are in this pandemic, we encourage our community to remember the importance of regular wellness exams. “People are worried may see an uptick in cancer
deaths just from this three month period of decreased screenings by the end of the year. COVID-19 is one public health crisis, but it seems that with this decrease in screening and wellness exams, it could lead to another public health crisis. From my practice, I’ve seen at least 20 to 25 cases where the cancer is so advanced now that they’re not curable, where if they had seen me two to three months ago, we could have done some type of therapy,” says Dr. Tang.
Dignity Health encourages you to check with your primary care physician to see if you are due for a check-up, and rest assured that our hospitals and doctor’s offices are practicing all health
department recommendations, including social distancing in the waiting rooms, disinfecting common areas and surfaces, and masking for all staff and patients.
“Northridge Hospital’s healthcare team is working harder than ever to ensure patients are safe and provided with compassionate, high-quality care,” said Paul Watkins, NHMC Hospital President. “Hospitals across the country are worried that many patients are not seeking care when they need services, and this care includes regular physician consultations and health screenings, leading to progressed cancer diagnosis.”
about contracting COVID-19, but it’s important to remember that mammograms, prostate exams, colonoscopies, and other annual screenings, are all critical in maintaining one’s health.”
Dr. Tang cautions the public that the likelihood of cancer progressing while avoiding doctor’s offices or hospital settings can put you at greater risk than the virus itself. “We

Demand Experience - Expect ExcellenceBuying or Selling... We Make Your Dreams Come True!
The Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) strongly opposes Assembly Bill 2231 (Kalra), which will redefine “de minimis” and worsen our housing crisis at a time when COVID-19 has already caused major setbacks for housing construction.
California’s housing shortage is now estimated to be two to four million housing units.
This imbalance between supply and demand has driven housing costs to be the highest in the nation, and AB 2231 will continue to raise the number of families that cannot afford homes.
VICA says at a time when we should be looking to increase housing supply, AB 2231 would result in higher monthly rents and mortgages for renters across the state. According to a study prepared by the California Homebuilding Foundation, the provisions in AB 2231 could add $84,000 to the cost of building a typical new home.
Implementing the prohibitive costs of AB 2231 would further discourage housing construction and exacerbate California’s housing shortage.
For more information, call VICA at (818) 817-0545. VICA is widely considered one of the most influential business advocacy
organizations in Southern California. With its knowledge of the legislative process and economic issues, VICA’s access to public officials ensures that the San Fernando Valley’s business perspective will be heard in the
interest of improving our business climate and quality of life. With input and guidance from its members, VICA maintains a regular presence at all levels of government to effectively represent Valley businesses.

Once at Rancho, customers should follow the “Compost Pick Up” signs and drive to the Cure Building and wait to be loaded.
