Camotes Island, a paradise in the northeast of Cebu City,

is consist of four islands, the Pacijan island, the Poro

island, the Ponson island and the Tulang island. The

islands of Pacijan and Poro are connected by a pave road

while Ponson island is in the eastern part of Poro Island is

separated by Camotes Sea. Tulang island on the other

hand is located to the north of Pacijan.

PACIJAN ISLAND is composed of one municipality, the

Municipality of San Francisco, the biggest town in Camotes

in terms of land area and population. PORO ISLAND has

two municipalities namely; the Municipality of Tudela and

the Municiplaity of Poro. PONSON ISLAND has one

municipality, the Municipality of Pilar and TULANG ISLAND

is an island barangay of San Francisco.

How Camotes Island got its name

The name Camotes Island was discovered when the

Spaniards arrived in the island for the first time and met

some native who were harvesting Camotes in the farm.

When asked the name of the place, the native thought that

the Spaniards were asking what they were harvesting , so

they replied CAMOTES . From then on, the island was

called CAMOTES ISLAND!

Camotes island Info

1. TIMUBO CAVE can be found in the town of Sunog, San Francisco.

One can swim in the cool fresh water inside the cave.

2. BUKILAT CAVE is an underground cave located in the town of

Tudela. It used to be a shelter from the Japanese during the World

War II. The cave was named after the founder Bukilat.

3. BUHO ROCK is located in the Municipality of Poro, it is made up of

rocky cliffs. Visitors can enjoy swimming or simply relax at the

breathtaking view of the nearby islands.

4. LAKE DANAO PARK is the largest and the only natural lake in the

Visayas. You can ty the Scenic Lake Cruise, a one hour SAKANAW

ride that travels around the eight (8) shape lake .

5. PORO CHURCH the church was built in 1849 by the Austinian

Friars. It is the oldest church in Camotes Island with Sto. Nino as

the patron saint. It is located in the town of Poro.

6. SOLI-SOLI FESTIVAL in San Francisco is celebrated every 8th of

March which coincide with the feast of St.Joseph the worker. It was

named after the Soi-Soli plant which abounds around Danao Lake.

The plant was used for weaving bags, mats hats and other

handcraft. The colorful street dancing competition uses soli-soli

plant as its dominant material.

Don t forget to drop by at the Jestrera s Bakeshop where you can

buy delicacies made of sweet potatoes CAMOTE freshly baked

into camotesticks, camotekies, camotetap and camotecake.

2. SOLI-SOLI & BAMBOO WEAVING San Francisco the residents in

the town of San Francisco weave mats, bags, hats and other handy

craft using the soli-soli plant. They also weave bamboo into

baskets and amakan that is used for walls and ceilings. One may

try weaving at the factory which is just a short distance from the

resort.
