When the Nursing Professional Practice Council held a scrub drive last August, they never imagined the huge response they would get.

Staff members donated more than 1,000 scrubs. Many had scrubs of different colors that they had been wearing before the hospital adopt-ed the uniform standards last year.

The scrubs were donated to Wind-sor Social Services, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Capital Communi-ty College, St. James’ Epis- c o p a l Church Missionary in West Hart-ford, and Community Outreach Surgical Center.

“Our staff embraced the values of caring and integrity by donating all of these used scrubs,” said Heath-er Machado, RN. “The generosity of the Hartford Hospital staff will remain in the hearts of the health care workers and students that re-ceived them, so they too can em-bark on their own journey of com-passionate patient care for those they serve.”

Peggy Eberlee from Volunteer Ser-vices used a few of the patterned scrubs to stitch a small quilt for the Nursing Professional Practice Council as a remembrance and an expression of gratitude for staff contributions.

“Our employees are all different, like the different fabrics that make up a quilt,” Machado said. “Togeth-er, their efforts weave compassion, care and unwavering dedication to the patients and families we serve. Our quilt is a reflection of the love, gifts, talent and energy each per-son brings to our community at Hartford Hospital.”

The nursing practice council de-cided to ask the Hartford Quilters Guild to make a larger quilt of the donated scrubs to commemorate the generosity and diversity of the staff members who donated them.

“The donated scrubs once worn by staff of Hart-ford Hospital will be woven into the quilt to represent the cultural fabric of our employees,” Machado said. “It will represent the many roles, many patterns and many people whose car-ing is woven into this symbolic quilt.”

The larger quilt will be displayed somewhere in the hospital when it is finished.
