Former Patients Donate Memory Boxes For Bereaved ParentsSeven members of the Renegade Knights firefight-er motorcycle battalion visited Hartford Hospital on May 28 with a donation of 40 Memory Boxes, hand-made mementos which are given to families of new-borns who die in a hospital.

The Memory Box Program is a national volunteer ef-fort that began in 1998 to provide the boxes to be-reaved parents to acknowledge their child’s life. The boxes are filled with mementos of the child, such as photographs, footprints, wristbands and locks of hair.

The Renegade Knights held a fund raiser and as-sembled the boxes to donate to Hartford Hospital.

Kevin Wells, president of the group, and his wife Kimberly lost a baby last year, and wanted to thank the nurses who made them feel so well cared for.

To date, the Memory Box program has provided more than 113,000 boxes to registered hospitals nationwide.

Each Memory Box is decorated by volunteers who pur-chase the boxes and supplies with their own funds, and then donate the finished boxes to participating hospitals. Bereaved families often cherish the boxes as the only mementos of their baby’s too-brief life.
