About the School of Communication and Information

The School of Communication and Information is a dynamic center of learning at the heart of Rutgers-New Brunswick on the College Avenue campus. While some of our academic programs were first offered in the early 1900s, the school itself was founded in 1982, and its research and teaching focus on communication, social and new media, library and information science, journalism and media studies, and information technology. The school’s competitive and renowned programs prepare students for engaged careers available today and developing for tomorrow.

The school is home to three academic departments—Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, and Library and Information Science. We offer undergraduate programs in Communication, Information Technology and Informatics, and Journalism and Media Studies, all leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree; a minor in Digital Communication, Information, and Media and a minor in Gender and Media; master's programs in Communication and Media, in Health Communication and Information, and in Information (accredited by the American Library Association); an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Communication, Information, and Media; and continuing education programs. Over 2,500 students are enrolled in our degree programs, and many thousands more Rutgers students take elective classes with us. SC&I has offices, classrooms, and laboratories in New Brunswick at 4 Huntington Street, the adjacent DeWitt House at 185 College Avenue, the SC&I Annex and Friedrich House at 192 College Avenue, Huntington House at 184 College Avenue, Richardson House at 1 Richardson Street, and a suite within Alexander Library at 169 College Avenue. Computer, multimedia, broadcast, information organization, and communication interaction laboratories and facilities are available for the use of its students and faculty.

Distinguished faculty of the school have been named International Communication Association fellows, Knight News Innovation Fellows at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Whiting Foundation Public Engagement fellow, a British Psychological Society fellow, and a resident fellow at the Leon Levy Center for Biography; appointed a Martin Luther King, Jr. Visiting Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; included in the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics trademarked list; winners of a Peabody Award, numerous National Communication Association awards, the American Association of School Librarians Distinguished Service Award, the ALA Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award, the APHA Betty J. Cleckley Minority Issues Research Award (honorable mention), Baldrige Foundation Award for Leadership Excellence (inaugural winner), Association of Internet Researchers book award, Marilyn Sternberg Award; appointed to the American Library Association Council and the Botswana-Rutgers Mahube Partnership for Transformation; invited to participate in the Geneva Trialogue; elected as officers of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the Association for Library and Information Science Education, and the Society of American Historians; and are recipients of various Rutgers University awards for teaching, research, and service, among other honors, including the Jeff Tellis Outstanding Advisor Award by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System, and a Loyal Son of Rutgers Award, among other honors.

Our outstanding students have received awards such as the Emerging Researcher Award by the Social Informatics Special Interest Group at ASIS&T (SIG SI), several International Communication Association awards, the 2020 Paul Robeson Renaissance Award, the 2021 iSchools Doctoral Dissertation Award (runner up), the National Communication Association Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award, an American Association of University Women American Dissertation Fellowship, Johnson & Johnson fellowships, and an Association of Research Libraries Diversity Scholar. Hundreds are inductees into their disciplinary honors societies.
