Welcome to the programme of the 2017 Dartmoor Walking Festival! The first ever Dartmoor Walking Festival in 2016 was a great success and the very positive feedback really supported the idea of it becoming an annual event, which is absolutely fabulous. As a result Moorland Guides have now organised the 2017 event which will be held during the last Bank Holiday week of the summer, from Saturday 26th August to Sunday 3rd September inclusive. From your comments and thoughts after last year’s festival we will again be putting on some favourite walks, but this year we are going one step further and introducing activities such as ‘Wild Swimming’ and events for those with mobility issues which our guides are happy to support. Last year we raised over £1000 for the British Heart Foundation through your generosity. This year we have decided to support a worthy charity close to many walkers’ hearts – the Dogs of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Teams.

We are being supported by a number of partners including the Dartmoor National Park Rangers, The National Trust, Woodland Trust and South West Lakes Trust to name but a few. We are also delighted to have the support of the Dartmoor Commoners Council whose members do so much to support tourism and diversification on Dartmoor. Last year the Dartmoor Walking Festival made it into the top ten walking festivals in the country! We hope you enjoy our varied and exciting program with something for everyone. Simon Dell MBE

Dartmoor Walking Festival 2017

Thank you to all our advertisers who have supported us this year in producing this programme. Please keep a close watch during the week on our Festival website at www.dartmoorwalkingfestival.co.uk where we are quickly able to update events if last-minute changes are necessary. More comprehensive details and descriptions of each walk can also be found on the website. Some events are dog-friendly but not all, so do please take care to ensure you read the details of each event carefully. Likewise some guides need you to book in advance for their events and this is clearly stated in the programme. Each event has the details of the leader and contact details in case of any questions you may have. It is important that you come properly dressed for the conditions and prevailing weather. Guides have the right to decline taking anyone on an event if they feel that welfare or safety is compromised for any reason. For the purposes of costs for walks – where a fee is charged, children are under 16 years of age. Some of the car parks within the National Park charge a fee so come with a few pound coins just in case. Whether as a quick visit when you’re staying elsewhere in Devon (although we know you’ll come back for moor soon!) or as a longer stay on Dartmoor itself, our travel information shows

how the fantastic links to main highways, train network, international airport and cross channel ferry terminals make it easy to get here. We recommend starting your trip on Dartmoor by visiting one of our award-winning Visitor Centres.

The friendly and knowledgeable local staff can assist with making the most of your time on Dartmoor. Wide, spectacular open vistas are a Dartmoor speciality but there is so much more to do here! Whether it’s a gentle stroll, an exhilarating mountain bike ride or a visit to a castle, you’ll discover walking options, activities and locations on your Dartmoor doorstep. Dartmoor National Park is delighted to be able to support the Dartmoor Walking Festival again this year by having our Rangers and other staff providing walks and events for all the family.

DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK Welcome to Dartmoor National Park – all 368 square miles of it. From its striking granite tors and steep wooded river valleys, to swathes of heather-covered moorland and hidden villages, Dartmoor is a land of contrasts.

For further details of our work within the National Park as well as how to maximise your stay with us visit our website at www.dartmoor.gov.uk
