Reflections for Corpus Christi

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)

14th June 2020

Sunday Cycle A Psalter Week 3 Ordinary Time Week 11

Pope Francis recalled that the month of June is dedicated in a special way to the Heart of Christ. He said, it is “a devotion that unites the great spiritual teachers and the simple among the people of God.” Indeed, he continued, “the human and divine Heart of Jesus is the wellspring where we can always draw upon God’s mercy, forgiveness and tenderness. We can do so by focusing on a passage from the Gospel, feeling that at the centre of every gesture, of every word of Jesus there is love, the love of the Father.” We can also do so, Pope Francis said, “by adoring the Eucharist, where this love is present in the Sacrament. Then our heart too, little by little, will become more patient, more generous, more merciful.” Pope Francis

"The Eucharist is the sacrament of love; it signifies love, it

produces love. The Eucharist is the consummation of the whole

spiritual life."

St. Thomas Aquinas

"The presence of Christ’s true body

and blood in this sacrament cannot

be detected by the senses or by

reason, but by faith alone, which

rests upon Divine authority. Hence,

on Luke 22:19 ("This is my body

that shall be delivered up for you"),

Cyril says, “Do not doubt whether

this is true, but take rather the

Saviour’s words on trust, because being the Truth, he does not lie.”

Prayers before the Blessed Sacrament

Prayer for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress Prayer (Ireland 2012)

Lord Jesus,

You were sent by the Father

to gather together those who are scattered.

You came among us, doing good and bringing healing,

announcing the Word of salvation

and giving the Bread which lasts forever.

Be our companion on life’s pilgrim way.

May your Holy Spirit inflame our hearts,

enliven our hope and open our minds,

so that together with our sisters and brothers in faith

we may recognise you in the Scriptures

and in the breaking of bread.

May your Holy Spirit transform us into one body

and lead us to walk humbly on the earth,

in justice and love,

as witnesses of your resurrection.

In communion with Mary,

whom you gave to us as our Mother

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Lord Jesus Christ, your heart was moved with love for

the men and women who came for help in their need.

You healed the sick, you fed the hungry, you forgave

sinners, you cried over Jerusalem. Above all, you

showed to those who were prepared to listen the way

to true life, for you are the Way the Truth and the Life.

Lord, your heart is still moved today by your people and

their many needs. Open our hearts to hear your word,

to accept your love, and to respond to your call. In

particular, I beg you to grant me the favour I ask (make

you request silently), provided that it will contribute to my

own eternal good and to the building up of your

Kingdom of justice, peace and love here on earth.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

Amen.

at the foot of the cross,

through you

may all praise, honour and blessing be to the Father

in the Holy Spirit and in the Church,

Now and forever.

ADORO TE DEVOTE (by St. Thomas Aquinas)

There are various translations of this prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas. The translation below is by Gerard

Manley Hopkins SJ - GODHEAD HERE IN HIDING

Adoro te devote, latens Deitas,

Quæ sub his figuris vere latitas; Tibi se cor meum totum subiicit,

Quia te contemplans totum deficit.

Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur, Sed auditu solo tuto creditur.

Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius; Nil hoc verbo veritátis verius.

In cruce latebat sola Deitas, At hic latet simul et Humanitas,

Ambo tamen credens atque confitens, Peto quod petivit latro pœnitens.

Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor: Deum tamen meum te confiteor.

Fac me tibi semper magis credere, In te spem habere, te diligere.

O memoriale mortis Domini Panis vivus, vitam præstans homini

Præsta meæ menti de te vívere, Et te illi semper dulce sapere.

Pie Pelicane, Iesu Domine, Me immundum munda tuo sanguine:

Cuius una stilla salvum facere Totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.

Iesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio, Oro, fiat illud quod tam sitio: Ut te revelata cernens facie,

Visu sim beátus tuæ gloriæ. Amen

Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore,

Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more, See, Lord, at Thy service low lies here a heart

Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art.

Seeing, touching, tasting are in thee deceived: How says trusty hearing? that shall be believed; What God's Son has told me, take for truth I do;

Truth Himself speaks truly or there's nothing true.

On the cross Thy godhead made no sign to men, Here Thy very manhood steals from human ken:

Both are my confession, both are my belief, And I pray the prayer of the dying thief.

I am not like Thomas, wounds I cannot see, But can plainly call thee Lord and God as he; Let me to a deeper faith daily nearer move,

Daily make me harder hope and dearer love.

O thou our reminder of Christ crucified, Living Bread, the life of us for whom he died,

Lend this life to me then: feed and feast my mind, There be thou the sweetness man was meant to find.

Bring the tender tale true of the Pelican; Bathe me, Jesu Lord, in what Thy bosom ran Blood whereof a single drop has power to win

All the world forgiveness of its world of sin.

Jesu, whom I look at shrouded here below, I beseech thee send me what I thirst for so,

Some day to gaze on thee face to face in light And be blest for ever with Thy glory's sight. Amen.

We would be grateful for your strict compliance with the social distancing rules and instructions

These measures have been implemented to reduce the risk for everyone attending the church.

Parish Draw 500 Club

Parish Draw 500 Club The winners for Week 39 are: Eileen Tierney and Jim Edwards.. Congratulations to the lucky winners. Each receives £50.

St. Bernadette's SVP conference Dear Parishioners,

despite the Covid 19 crisis the work of St. Bernadette's SVP

conference has not stopped. We continue to provide vital assistance

to those in need. Our main source of income has always been your

generous donations via the red box collections after Mass.

Unfortunately the cessation of public Mass has understandably seen a

significant reduction in donations. If you are able to, could you please

consider making a donation via the donation box in St. Bernadette's

church or via the parochial house at 28 Willowbank Park (marking

your envelope St. Bernadette's SVP)? Your generosity, as always is very much appreciated and never so

important as in this health and economic crisis.

Foodbank at Good Shepherd Parish Centre The Food Bank is staffed by volunteers from Bredagh GAC, Ormeau

Boxing Club, and Rosario Football Club & Youth Centre. It is open

each weekday from 10am to 12pm in the Good Shepherd Parish

Centre. We would greatly appreciate donations of non-perishable

food items at this time of great need. Money donations are also

welcome.

Parish Collections Many thanks to all those who have been able to contribute to

the parish finances through standing order, PayPal or the parish

envelopes.

We recognise that this is a time of financial worry for many, and

for that reason giving to the parish should be secondary to your

own particular needs.

Trócaire Every year Trócaire asks for your help during Lent to fund

lifesaving programmes around the world. This year, of

course, it was not possible to return Trócaire boxes through

schools or parishes in the usual way. This is the worst

possible timing coming just as the world’s poorest people

need us most. Therefore, Trócaire are appealing to you to

return your Lenten donation. Simply count or estimate what

is in your box and donate in the following ways:

1. Online at www.trocaire.org

2. By phone: 0800 912 1200

3. By post to Trócaire, 10 King Street, Belfast, BT1 6AD

4. Alternatively retain your box until it is safe to return your donation and for parishes to accept them.

The contents of each and every Trócaire box, no matter how small, come together to make a significant

difference. This virus knows no borders, but neither does our compassion.

Sacred Heart Novena

The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated this year on

Friday 19th June 2020.

Each year the Sacred Heart Messenger publication produces a

nine day Novena in preparation for the feast. It is held for the

nine days leading up to the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which is

always celebrated nineteen days after Pentecost. This year the

Novena runs from Thursday 11th June - Friday 19th June.

The Novena prayers are available as a pull-out supplement in the

June Messenger. This year, as a way of encouraging and

supporting Messenger readers and promoters, and as a way to

help us all to pray, the 2020 Novena has been made available to

download from the Messenger website FREE OF CHARGE.

DOWNLOAD THE 2020 SACRED HEART NOVENA FOR FREE!

Simply visit www.messenger.ie/sacred-heart-novena-2020/ and either view the booklet

on your computer or print it off to use during each day of the Novena.

The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus speaks of God's boundless and passionate love for humanity. In

the past many have found comfort and solace praying this Novena, and this year we have particular

reason as a community, a nation and a global people to find strength, patience and reassurance in God’s

love for us.
