ROXBURGH RISE NEWS
As you may be aware, last term I was privileged to be one of 6 Victorian Principals to be selected and paired with 6 Indian Principals, to participate in the Women in School Leadership Pilot Program in New Delhi, India from the 15th -25th September.
This 10-day professional learning experience in India enabled me to connect with other female leaders, both within and outside education and non-profit organizations, to explore strategies for enhancing student health and wellbeing and leading social change through schools. It also gave me an insight into some of the world’s major challenges and allowed me to share knowledge and approaches to common issues related to health and wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and climate change.
Part of the program included a 4 day visit to my Principal partner’s school, Bharat Ram Global School in Greater Noida. The school has 1500 students from pre-prep to Year 12. I was touched by the warm traditional Indian welcome I received as I arrived at the school, which included being showered with petals, receiving a garland and the students performing a traditional Bhangra folk dance, followed by a whole school assembly in their large auditorium, where the students presented dance and yoga performances. I spent time meeting with the Principal, Rajni Jauhari and her leadership team and visited both junior and senior classrooms. I enjoyed participating in traditional Rangoli painting on the ground, witnessing Kabaddi, an Indian contact team sport, participating in yoga and a traditional folk dance, ‘Dandiya Raas’ using sticks and having my hands painted with henna.
I was also fortunate enough to have time to visit some historical sites including palaces, forts and mosques and of course, the breathtaking Taj Mahal in Agra which was a highlight.
Learning about and experiencing the culture of another country was an amazing experience.
Part 2 of this program will involve my Indian partner Principal, Rajni Jauhari, visiting us in
May 2020. I am looking forward to the Roxburgh Rise School community welcoming her
to our school next year so that we can share the work that we do.

Peer Mediation Grade 5 students are invited to
apply to become RRPS Peer
Mediators. Successful applicants
will complete one day of in-house
training on the 2nd of December.
Students will learn conflict
management skills and strategies for
resolving common lunchtime
disputes. All students report that
they enjoy the training.
“I thought the training was
spectacular,” wrote one student. “I
learnt that we should let the kids
speak and not to take sides”, wrote
another student.
We are looking for students who
demonstrate good listening skills,
are compassionate and
understanding with younger
students. Peer Mediators need to
be responsible and reliably attend
their timetabled sessions.
Please ask your Grade 5 teacher for
an application form, or please
contact Susan, Student Wellbeing
Officer for further information.

On Thursday 31st October, the Grade 2 students participated in the annual Grade 2 Sleep Over at Roxy Rise. They had been eagerly anticipating the event for weeks and the night it finally arrived, they were fortunate enough to experience warm Spring weather, perfect conditions to enjoy the outdoor activities planned.
The proceedings began at 5.30 pm, with many exciting activities scheduled for the evening. The students first engaged in rotations which consisted of a sack race on the oval, games of Tug of War and Duck Duck Goose, a play on the playground and a jumping castle. This was followed by a disco where the students impressed the teachers with their cool moves on the dance floor in the Gallery. A delectable dinner of pizza and gelato was swooped up by the children who were hungry after the busy afternoon they had.
The students cleaned up and brushed their teeth, got cosy in their pyjamas and sleeping bags to watch a movie. Due to the excitement of the evening, it took a while for the students to settle down for sleep but eventually they all rested their heads on their pillows to relax for some sleep.
The next morning, students were served a wholesome breakfast with a choice of toast or cereal. Students then dove straight into more fun activities with another go at the jumping castle, parachute games and Octopus.
A much needed platter of juicy fruit was devoured by all while students enjoyed activities in their classrooms. They also made their own healthy sandwiches selecting from ingredients such as cheese, tomato and lettuce.
Students were picked up by parents with smiles on their faces, happy to return home yet also warmed by the opportunity to connect with their peers in the shared fun experiences.
The Grade 2 teachers would like to offer a huge thanks to all the teachers who helped us out with loaning of rooms, serving breakfast, supervising and assisting on the night and getting us coffee. A big thank you also goes out to Mrs Krstevski for her seamless efforts in organising the entire event. It was definitely worth it for the big, bright smiles we were greeted with on Friday morning.

A few weeks ago, the Grade 6 Sustainability Action Team attended and presented at the 2019 Melbourne Water - Kids Teaching Kids Conference. Roxburgh Rise Primary School was invited to present this year and our presentation focussed on how clean Melbourne’s water is, but also how easily it can be contaminated. Over 50 schools attended with over 500 people in attendance, which was a great experience for these grades 6 students.

Foundation Inquiry Unit Every term students participate in a WOW Day that aims to tune in students to the term’s inquiry topic. On Tuesday the 15th of October, students engaged in learning about the topic ‘Weather and the Seasons’ by travelling through Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring!
Throughout the day, students participated in various themed activities designed to provide students with new knowledge through fun experiences.
Students learnt about Autumn leaves and Spring flowers and participated in associated craft activities. The Summer session saw the students design and label outfits appropriate for the warm weather and eat icy poles. Some classes learnt about Summer by going to the sandpit to have an imaginary visit to the beach. Students took the initiative to pack ‘beach day’ essentials such as towels, water bottles and sunscreen. Most students agreed that the day’s highlight occurred during the winter session where students warmed up by drinking hot chocolate. Some classes even made snow! Students enjoyed stamping their ‘season passes’ as they completed each activity.
Since then, students have continued to learn about seasons and the weather in their inquiry, reading and writing lessons. If you ask, students love to share their new found knowledge!

Dear Parents and Student’s,
The Life Skills team of our school will once again be involved in the K-mart Wishing Tree Appeal so we will be running a Casual Clothes Day Fundraiser on Friday the 22nd of November to raise money to buy presents for children who are less fortunate.
Once again we are hoping that our wonderful school community will help support this great cause. Last year we raised $986 which made 105 children happy on Christmas day. We would love you all to help us beat last year’s total by donating a gold coin.
Thank You, The Life Skills Team

Cooking Classes Over the past few terms we have been fortunate to receive funding for an English teacher to work with our cooking class students.
One of the popular activities is “Chef of the Day” where a student demonstrates how to make a cultural dish to the class and explains it in English. It has been a fabulous way to practise speaking in English, build confidence in front of a group and share special dishes from the students’ countries of origin.
Thank you to the following ladies:
Ebru from Turkey who made cake. Zena from Iraq who made Melfoof. Maristella from Brazil who made Feijoada. Nahren from Iraq who made Baked Barramundi.
