THE GREAT STUPA FESTIVAL OF LIGHT
On Saturday 20th May 2017, our school took part in The Great Stupa Festival of Light, Peace Flags in the Wind Project. “Peace Flags in the Wind” is a project started by Miami-based high school teacher Joseph Vasile, and first unveiled with the opening of the Jade Buddha to Universal Peace tour in Miami, USA. The flags have since been made and displayed around the world in New York and Alabama, London, Chicago, Turkey, Romania, Haiti and India. Members of each community were asked to create their own symbol for peace on a blank flag, which was then strung together to connect in a powerful united artwork. Our school took part and it required 60 students to design a flag which represented their interpretation of PEACE. Our school received the following letter of appreciation with regards to our contribution to the project: Dear Staff and Students of Roxburgh Primary School,
On behalf of the Great Stupa I would like to thank you for your contribution to the Peace Flags in the Wind project. Your time and
effort in making the flags is truly appreciated.
The designs and ideas that came back from your school showed a great deal of thoughtfulness.
Each of the flags you sent us were sewn together and launched on the night of our Festival of Light by our invited dignitaries:
members of Bendigo’s Interfaith Council, Cr Margaret O’Rourke (Mayor) the mayor of City of Greater Bendigo, Maree Edwards,
Member for Parliament and Peace Flags in the Wind founder Joseph Vasile. They were hoisted in front of a large audience of over
1000 spectators in attendance, and looked amazing on display here at the Great Stupa. I have included some photographs below
for you.
Thanks again for your participation, we are proud to have worked with the children of Victoria in creating this message of peace
in the world, and we look forward to working with you again in the future. We’ll be in touch again next year as we prepare for
Peace Flags in the Wind 2018.
Sincerely
Kat Dole
