Dear Parents and Guardians, APPA TRANS TASMAN CONFERENCE
Lisa Audino, Sheryl Young and I recently attended the APPA TRANS TASMAN CONFERENCE in Auckland, New Zealand (31
st May-3
rd June). Both
Lisa and Sheryl received a study grant from the Victorian Principals Association (VPA) to attend. I was able to access my (VPA) professional learning allowance to attend. The travel was approved by the Department of Education. On arrival a Pōwhiri or welcome ceremony provided delegates with a special opportunity to experience Māori traditions in action. We were later entertained by performances from the Pacific Fusion, Manurewa Intermediate School. Keynote speakers included;
In our lifetime – From Institution to Families,
Georgette Mulheir
Don’t worry – be happy: Teaching Resilience in Primary Schools, Celia
McCarthy
Courageous Leadership- Maori. Achievement Collaborative (MAC) in Action, Hoana Pearson
What works for Maori, works for all, Te Ringakaha Tia-Ward
Inquiry & Innovation, Curiosity & Teamwork – Strong Outcomes for All, Linda Kaser and Judy Halbert
Rigour, Ritual, Repetition and Rhetoric: How to understand and lead your culture to inspire your people to meet any challenge, Michael Henderson
Kids Inspiring Kids to Engage Hearts and Minds,
Riley & Steve Hathaway
Building Resilient Children; Walking the Talk, Sarah Tillott
Transformational Change from the Stronger Smarter Within, Dr
Chris Sarra
Bending Perceptions, Cam
Calkoen
Some of the professional learning that I will take away from attending includes;
• If people collaborate and work together we can move faster with data and
outcomes. • Working together creates the magic that
helps improve student outcomes • Learning involves patience and time • Learning requires exploration of one's
identity, culture and values • Learning involves recognising the
consequences of one's actions • An understanding of the importance of
culture and language to people • An understanding that language is the
bloodline of a culture • An understanding of the three levels of
culture - Believe, Behave and Belong
• The importance of resilience, self awareness and mindfulness in our lives

Review of
Newsletter
distribution:
We are reviewing the way we
send information home to
families via our weekly
newsletter. Options for reading
the newsletter could be from the
following: Tiqbiz app on your
phone/ipad/tablet/computer,
email or by clicking on the
newsletter link on the school
website.
From the commencement of
term three our school will no
longer be sending a paper copy
of the newsletter home to each
family. There will however, be
limited copies held at the office
for those unable to access an
electronic copy. This will
eventually be phased out as well.

showcased in two Music Performance Concerts held every year. Drumming is a great way for students to express
themselves and have fun musically.

YOU CAN DO IT!!
Accepting Myself Throughout this term, the You Can Do It program has seen classes focus on I Can Do
It thinking (thinking positively) and Taking Risks (trying new activities/skills in
class).
In the final three weeks of this term, teachers will be asking the students to extend
their positive thinking to include “Accepting Myself” concepts. The You Can Do It
program defines Accepting Myself thinking as “not thinking badly of myself when I
make a mistake”.
Making mistakes is something we all do. However, if a student berates themselves
every time they make an error, then pretty soon the student may not only lose
confidence but give up trying altogether for fear of making another mistake.
Another thing to consider is that through the mistake process we learn. Making a
mistake often involves us back tracking, assessing what went wrong and correcting
it, which tends to stick in our memory much more than achieving something quickly
and moving on.
So while we don’t encourage students to try to make mistakes, we should see
mistakes as something to be taken advantage of when they happen. We all can do
it!

BEEP! BEEP! BEPP! Goes the school bell. I go out to lunch with fear. My
mum tells me that we are fine and that we are safe, but I ask her “What if
the wind changes?”
“Soraya come play with us.” requested a friend
“I think I might stick to the bench today.” I replied with dread. As
minutes pass, I feel a big gust of blazing, disturbing wind whipping me.
The terrifying thing that I feared is here!
“AHHH!” Shrieked a crowd of very frightened people.
“That fire is heading our way and will obliterate Marysville!” I freeze and
stare blankly at the scorching destructive enemy. Never have I ever felt
so scared and helpless before. Heart pounding like a drum, sweat
dripping down to my nose, tears of fear travelling their way down to my
cheek. “Run”, my mind tells me to run. As I run, it feels like the flames
are chasing after me like a cheetah licking at my heels. I’m safe now but
I’m so confused. Do I go back? Should I stay here? Should I look for help?
Not even the thought of sleep crosses my mind. The oxygen in the air is
being poisoned by the vicious flames. Eventually I sleep and fear comes
over me.
As I wake up to the scorching heat that is chocking me, I try re-tracing
my steps to the school. My chin falls to the ground, I am flabbergasted!
There is absolutely nothing left of the town except ashes and the dead
charred bodies of the people who tried saving our town. Suddenly, the
sun slaps me making me feel dizzy. I try to reach out to the fire fighter
and open my mouth but nothing comes out and I collapse on the pile of
ash. “Where am I?” I question
“We’re taking you to the hospital!” she yells over the helicopter. We fly
into the poisoning smoke. I look down to the place I once called home.
The fire might have destroyed my community, but it won’t destroy our
hope.

One Minute’s Silence by Vian 6B
Diary. Shivering Turkish sand. It had filled my boots as I rushed in with the other Anzacs onto Gallipoli. It was traumatising to hear gunshots and cries of the wounded even from the Turks. Even when I knew the Turks had the advantage, I was determined. We were swarming towards them with our rifles, hoping to gain the upper hand, but instead the ground was strung with thousands of bodies. I didn’t know what to think of this. Even so, we, Anzacs had an unyielding bravery that in exchange only took us so far. We had to escape. Trenches cut like wounds were the only protection we had to get back on our ships. I never thought I would make it but here I am. Crops of corpses we had left behind had fought brilliantly but couldn’t make it. To this day I am very grateful to have made it out alive. I only wished we had less casualties and injured. One thing is that I know the Turks felt the perfect lack of sound that a war had ended.
