ROUNDHOUSE vISION & MISSIONin September of 1996 the Roundhouse advisory committee, composed of neighbourhood repre-sentatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff , undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. the following is the result of those discussions:The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities.this mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTall of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to fi nd new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISthe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of north america’s densest and most diverse urban sites. the Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONthe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. to do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. these relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

the Roundhouse community arts & Recreation centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation and the Roundhouse community arts and Recreation Society.

TURNTABlE UPDATEWe are very excited that construction is nearing completion for the Roundhouse turntable Plaza. completion time is anticipated to be around late fall/early winter. the goal of the renovation is to protect, promote, and enhance the existing character and heritage values of the turntable by introducing more contemporary but historically compatible elements to animate the plaza and create a stronger sense of place.

the project elements completed so far include:

• Rotation of the turntable slightly to help bring people into the plaza and create a better defined performance space

• Building of the viewing platform overlooking the turntable pit to feature the turning mechanism. the historical interpretation to tell the story of the historic turntable and the Roundhouse will be installed soon.

• installation of the mist/steam feature for children and families to enjoy reminiscent of the “age of Steam”. last touches will be completed on this this fall.

to come:

• Strong, colourful, and playful furniture and trees to make the plaza more appealing as a place for casual use on a regular, daily basis. to be installed this fall.

• the crane reminiscent of early railway cranes to support a canopy that can be used for shade but also as a basis for perfor-mance and celebration. this last element will be completed late fall or early winter 2012.

Further information on this project can be obtained by stopping in at the Roundhouse or by calling ernest Fanthorpe, Facility Development coordinator at 604-257-8458.

let us say thanks to all our staff, partners and instructors for making us “numero uno” in 2011.Dr. V. Setty Pendakur president

Bril-liantly merging storytelling with live sketch art, Mroué takes the audience on a perplexing search for the “truth,” littered with a sea of documents, clippings, photos and found objects. the material accumulates under multi-camera live feeds as we are exposed to the ways media shape public perception, rumours, accusations, political conflicts and scandals. the winner of the 2010 Spalding Gray award, Mroué’s often-controversial work draws attention to issues and events that have been swept under the rug in the current political climate of the Middle east.
