2 About the Roundhouse

Table of conTenTsabouT The Roundhouse

Roundhouse Vision & MissionIn September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:

The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

the Roundhouse As PRoJeCtAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

the Roundhouse As oAsisThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

the Roundhouse As ConneCtionThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

WheRe We ARe: The Roundhouse is located on the former Expo site at the corner of Davie & Pacific • The aptly named Yaletown- Roundhouse Skytrain Station is 100 feet from us and Buses C21 & C23 stop within feet of the Roundhouse. •Walking from Granville Street, head east five blocks down Davie • Underground pay parking is available (access off Drake) for $2/hour; $12/7 am - 6 pm weekends and holidays and $3/6 pm - 11 pm everyday. The underground parking closes at 11:00 pm but shows that run later than 11:00 pm will have access through the Roundhouse.

The Residency program is an important part of our commitment to community cultural development. Professional artists and educators in residence engage for a year or more with the people who come together in and around the Roundhouse every day. Their collaborative projects unfold over time through workshops, drop in programs, discussions, rehearsals and productions. Residency projects are about building creative community; they promote diversity, interdisciplinary activity, innovation collaboration and involvement. In a Roundhouse Residency the process is as important as final product.

Residency programs are FREE with membership thanks to funding from the Vancouver Parks Board program but please register.

Roundhouse CoMMunitY dAnCeRsNow in its 13th year, this dance residency brings together non-professional movers of all ages, working

with professional dancers in a wide range of disciplines from classical ballet to hip hop, to clowning and aerial dance. Past instructors have included Tara Cheyenne, Kevin Bergsma, Donna Redlick, Jai Govinda, Desiree Dunbar and many others.

This season begins with guest artist Kat Single-Dain, co-founder of The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. Kat teaches, directs, choreographs and performs in Vancouver, using clowning, contact improvisation, contemporary, tap and swing dance in various combinations. She is an award-winning filmmaker and critically acclaimed choreographer and dramaturge specializing in the intersection of clown and contemporary dance. A graduate of UC Berkeley, she has choreographed seven full-length, original theatre productions, teaches across BC, and in Nevada yearly, and in Vancouver hosts regular dance classes and free community jams exploring multidisciplinary approaches to dance. Kat recently wrote, directed and choreographed Hard Times Hit Parade, an immersive theatrical experience set in a Depression era dance marathon. She is involved in the post production for the feature film version of Hard Times Hit Parade.

In November the Community Dancers begin work with Kathryn Ricketts on a community project: Sounding Communities: Rhythm Footsteps, Stories. In her work, Kathryn Ricketts focuses on personal narratives shared and reconfigured using artifacts, movement and theatre as a base for exploration. A dancer, choreographer, researcher and interdisciplinary performance artist, Kathryn creates work where collaboration, shared storytelling and performance merge into one. Kathryn has worked for over 25 years in the field of movement and visual arts, heading three dance companies in Europe and North America. Her work has been presented throughout Europe, South America, Africa and Canada in schools, art galleries, museums and community spaces. She holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University focusing on an approach she terms Embodied Poetic Narrative. For more information see page 52

residency as part of Sonic Playground 2012. Sound artists Soressa Gardner and Donna Lytle will work with youth ages 11 – 16 to develop an original sound project that brings together found sound and oral storytelling in a soundscape of Vancouver past and present. Collect sound and stories through sound walks, interviews, diaries, and spoken word. Participants will learn about recording, creating and manipulating sound to creatively explore past and future visions of this place. The final work will be premiered at Sonic Playground as part of the Jazz Festival 2012.

CoVeRt theAtRe: deAR stePhen With RAdix theAtReThis season the Roundhouse is collaborating with Radix Theatre to create our first covert theatre

project. Covert theatre brings together community members to create public music, dance and theatre interventions that play out on city streets, in shopping malls, on transit and in public spaces. Join us to integrate art into the push and pull of daily life, and make public space more delightful, provocative and a little bit surreal.

Radix Theatre has been producing innovative and exciting performance events locally and nationally since 1988, focusing on experimentation and collaborative creation. Radix is currently steered by Artistic Director Andrew Laurenson who works with a team of artists developing company vision and projects. Their work is often site-specific, experimenting with the idea of audience in relation to performance. Past performance locations have includes a tour bus, a diner, a parking lot with audience members in cars, IKEA and a hotel banquet hall.

tuRntAble tuRninG; the Roundhouse then And noWA Celebration of the historical and Contemporary life of the Roundhouse Complex and

Community This interdisciplinary arts project will explore the history of the Roundhouse neighbourhood and its

significance as the terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. At the same time we celebrate the integration of the contemporary and the historical in our densely populated and diverse urban neighbourhood. In September and October historian in residence John Atkin and aerial dance artist Kira Schaffer will work with community members to create two outdoor works that will be presented at the Roundhouse to celebrate the restoration and renovation of our turntable. John and the students of Elsie Roy Elementary School and King George Secondary will create a ghost map of the original Roundhouse complex on the sidewalks of Yaletown, while Kira Schaffer’s new aerial dance project will explore immigration and change in Vancouver over the last 125 years.

theAtRe RePlACeMent: MoVie GRouP Theatre Replacement Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Bae Yamamoto invite older adults to

read, discuss and experiment with the staging of classic American film scripts from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Movie Group will explore the ways language, place, culture and the participating individuals themselves have changed in the 40 years since these films were premiered. The goal of these sessions will be to experiment with combining written screen plays with individual personal stories, objects, movement, voice and performance. We will continue in the winter and spring of 2012, culminating in a public workshop performance of one of the scripts and connected memories.

Artistic Directors James Long and Maiko Bae Yamamoto founded Theatre Replacement over 15 years ago and performances of their work have toured Canada, the US and Europe. Theatre Replacement builds performances that speak to contemporary existence and investigate the events that fill our lives. Their work engages with biography, relationship to audience and space and explorations of unique and challenging ways to explore content and ideas.

For such a young city, Vancouver has a deliciously rich food and agricultural history. Our diverse ethnic communities have helped create Vancouver’s food culture. From the regional food sources of the Musqueam First Nation to Chinatown, where the Chinese Smorgasbord was born and where the best Chinese food in the world is….From our east side Italian backyard gardens to the west side’s Granville Island Pubic Market, Vancouver’s No. 1 tourist destination. And while most of Vancouver’s farmland is a distant memory, the names live on at the McLeery Golf Course built on Vancouver’s first farm, and Avalon Dairy whose 1906 ranch started with just 6 cows. From Rogers Sugar to a year round farmers market and from UBC’s very own farm to the increasing number of rooftop gardens, there’s an art to growing food. From Overwaitea Foods who started as the “over weight tea” store to the 100 Mile Diet which has caught the world’s attention in raising awareness about the importance of eating a regional diet. Vancouver’s past is a tasty piece of history. Come take a bite.

Gold Mountain Dream explores the themes of Chinese Diaspora and cultural conflict through interactive media arts, live music, spoken word, and backed by life-stories collected from numerous insightful interviews from different generations of Chinese Canadians.

Incorporating Asian traditions with contemporary expression, the Orchid Ensemble combines Chinese traditional musical instruments (erhu and zheng) with western percussion, performing original work by Canadian composers: Mark Armanini, Dorothy Chang, Lan Tung, Michael Vincent, Ya-wen Wang, and Jin Zhang. Media artists Kenneth Newby and Aleksandra Dulic punctuate the space with interactive multimedia: a projection of abstract images drawing on Chinese calligraphy, brush painting, Chinese dance, Chinese opera, and videos and photos from museum collections.

Just like most Canadians, the artists are themselves different generations of immigrants from different lands. In this project, they examine the search for cultural identity and social acceptance in four themes – water, fire, travel, and dream.

Musicians: Lan Tung (erhu/Chinese violin & vocals), Yu-Chen Wang (zheng/Chinese zither), and Jonathan Bernard (percussion).

Remember that building.... you know, where all the glass is now? Join Radix Theatre associate artist Andreas Kahre in exploring Vancouver’s ever-changing landscape (and soundscape). Workshop participants will build a paper replica of the city based only on their memories of it. The resulting installation will be suspended in mid-air in the Roundhouse performance centre for the public to view as part of the City’s 125th Anniversary celebrations. An immersive soundscape will accompany the installation, created through soundwalks with acoustic ecology pioneer Hildegard Westerkamp, who has been recording and presenting Vancouver sounds since the early 1970’s.

The YVR workshop will offer participants a unique experience in paper and audio design, while reflecting on Vancouver’s unusual history as a city at the interstice between cultures, continents and conditions.

With support from the City of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary Grants Program this project celebrates Vancouver’s eldest citizens through a series of interactive, inter-generational, and inter-cultural social events at 14 locations in Vancouver. The project will be a collection of Lifelong Journey stories including digital photography, short biographical stories related to the lives of Vancouver’s Eldest Citizens who come from diverse backgrounds and communities in Vancouver. The unique lives of these seniors will be representative of the evolution of Vancouver’s rich history in local communities. We will honour the lives of elders who are artists, dancers, musicians, athletes, actors, tradespersons, secretaries, doctors, housewives, business owners, board members, and community members through this Lifelong Journey Poster Project. If you are interested in being involved in the project or would like to refer an elder in the community.
