Dear Fellows,

We are pleased to welcome you to the Second Rothschild Fellows Colloquium. The first Colloquium was held in 2013. The feedback we received reinforced our optimism about the potential benefits of fostering a community of young scholars that traverses disciplinary and institutional lines.

Yad Hanadiv’s activity in academia stems from a conviction that supporting and nurturing international-calibre research in Israel, in particular through investments in young scholars and fields of distinction, plays an important role in this country’s future. The Rothschild Fellows selection committees are invariably impressed by the number of eminently qualified candidates vying for the awards. The ability to sustain top quality research in Israel depends first and foremost on the commitment of scholars such as your-selves.

We encourage you to play an active role in sustaining this community and hope to continue to find ways of working together to advance the quality and reach of scientific inquiry in Israel’s universities.

Dear Rothschild Fellows and Colleagues,

I am honored to welcome you to the 2nd Rothschild Fellows Colloquium at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS). In this colloquium, we are hosting previous and current Rothschild Fellows who represent all universities in Israel. Most importantly, the Rothschild Fellows here today represent academic diversity in terms of gender and age, as well as in the research and scholarship they pursue in mathematics, history, brain science, literature, art, ecology and everything in between. Looking back at the list of Rothschild Fellows from the past, I see many of the leaders, not only of Israeli academia, but also Israeli leadership in general. Therefore, I feel that receiving this fellowship is not only a privilege, but a tremendous responsibility. As Director of the IIAS, I also feel this sense of responsibility. I hope the IIAS will serve as a partner who can help you realize your vision.

With my very best wishes and warmest regards,

Michal Linial Director, Israel Institute for Advanced Studies

ABOUT YAD HANADIV

Yad Hanadiv is dedicated to creating resources for advancing Israel as a healthy, vibrant, democratic society, committed to Jewish values and equal opportunity for the benefit of all its inhabitants. The Foundation acts in Israel on behalf of Rothschild family trusts that carry forward a 130-year tradition of philanthropy in Israel.

Construction of Israel’s Knesset (1966) and Supreme Court (1992) build-ings, the establishment of Educational Television (1966), the Centre for Educational Technology (1974), the Open University of Israel (2004), the Ramat Hanadiv Memorial Gardens and Nature Park and current efforts to renew the National Library of Israel, are among Yad Hanadiv’s best known projects. But it should be noted that Yad Hanadiv is reticent about advertis-ing its activities.

The Foundation’s core activity is organised in four programme areas: Academic Excellence, Education, Environment and Arab Community.

ABOUT ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Academic Excellence Programme encompasses Yad Hanadiv’s long-standing efforts in support of academic life in Israel – including the Rothschild Prizes and Fellowships and the Michael Bruno Memorial Awards, funding for the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies and more recent efforts on behalf of the Humanities and of the Life Sciences in Israel. Our newest initiative is looking to advance excellence among Arab students in Science and Technology.

In 2012 Yad Hanadiv inaugurated a framework to support the ability of local Life Sciences researchers to pursue cutting-edge work, by helping to nar-row the gap in resources available to them as compared to Life Scientists

abroad. Key activities include a partnership with the Israel National Center for Personalized Medicine (INCPM) located at the Weizmann Institute; partnering with the Israel Science Foundation to provide researchers from across Israel with research funding to take advantage of national research facilities; and support for the Edmond Safra Bioinformatics programme at Tel Aviv University.

Support of the Humanities has long been a cornerstone of Yad Hanadiv’s philanthropy. Maintaining a vibrant and diverse community of researchers working across multiple fields is of critical importance not only to Israeli academia but to Israeli society. As in other areas, promoting a national perspective of needs and inter-university collaborations is fundamental to our approach. Funding is provided through two key programmes: The Humanities Fund, established in 2008 (in partnership with the Planning and Budgeting Committee of the Council for Higher Education), and the more recently launched Rothschild Faculty Planning Initiative in the Humanities which fosters a strategic approach to faculty recruitment on the part of university leaders.

The recently launched Arab Excellence strategy (developed in partnership with Yad Hanadiv’s Arab Community programme) seeks to increase the number and percentage of Arab university graduates who obtain faculty positions in the Sciences or high-level industry positions in Science and Technology. First steps are the launching of a new Science Education pro-gramme for outstanding students from leading high schools in the North, operated by the Davidson Institute of Science Education at the Weizmann Institute; and partnering with the Council for Higher Education to support Maof Fellowships for Arab faculty.

ABOUT THE ROTHSCHILD FELLOWSHIP

The Rothschild Fellowship programme was established to help young scholars of outstanding academic merit and potential to advance in their respective fields. The first group of Fellows was selected for the 1979-80 academic year. Nine fellowships were awarded in that first round.

In 1997 the programme was divided into two categories, Rothschild Fellowships in the Natural, Exact and Life Sciences and Engineering and Rothschild Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Up to twelve Rothschild Fellowships are awarded each year in Sciences and Engineering and up to nine in Humanities and Social Sciences.

The first Selection Committee was chaired by Sir Isaiah Berlin. Subsequent Committee Chairs have included Aryeh Dvoretzky (former head of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities), Hillel Furstenberg, David Kazhdan and David Shulman. The current Chairman of the Natural, Exact and Life Sciences and Engineering Committee is Professor Marcus Feldman (Stanford University); Professor Peter Jelavich (Johns Hopkins University) chairs the Committee for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Almost 560 Fellowships have been awarded to date. The majority of Fellows have pursued their academic careers in Israel, with many becoming leading figures in their fields. Numerous Fellows can be found in positions of aca-demic leadership in Israel, including university presidents, vice presidents and rectors. (A complete list of past Fellows may be found on page 38.)

In 2012 we initiated a tradition of Rothschild Fellows Colloquia. The Colloquium takes place every three years and brings together the most recent three cohorts of Rothschild Fellows, many of whom are still in the midst of their postdoctoral studies. It is an opportunity for Fellows to meet colleagues and present their work to committee members and senior aca-demics in Israel. The 2015 Colloquium includes Fellows from 2011–2013.
