July 2012 Gaven Hurley, District Governor Issue 1
Rotary International - District 7120
Happy new Rotary year!
Almost everything
reminds me of a song,
and, right now it is from
“The Sound of Music”
and I hear “Let’s start at
the very beginning, a very
good place to start….”
This year, 2012-2013, will
be a very interesting year-
--as will the few years to
follow. It seems as
though Rotary
international is making up
for little change over 100
years. Maybe allowing
women in 25 years ago was exhausting, and the best thing
(perhaps) Rotary ever did. (My first year as club president,
in NJ, was 1988-89, the first full year with women…very
interesting.)
In October, I will complete 30 years in Rotary. Pretty good
for a guy who avoided joining Rotary. I am in Rotary
because of two gentlemen who did not give up on me, as
they went the extra step for me. Have you taken “No’ for
the answer, or, decided ahead of time “They’ll say ‘no’ so
why bother?” We need to demonstrate the value of Rotary
to the individual---our customer. They are tuned to WII-
FM, otherwise known as “What’s In It For Me”. When in
doubt, tell your story as to why you stayed in Rotary.
While you are at it, introduce your customer to long-time
club members, Asking them how old they were when they
joined Rotary. Then stand back and watch your customer’s
reaction when he or she hears “In my twenties (or 30s or
40s)”. We did not always have gray hair or no hair!
There is so much to do in July as a Rotary leader. I am
asking my presidents to do that - lead. And lead by
example. Before you ask for participation, do so yourself.
Be Friendly. People want to join with friendly, welcoming
people. In some clubs… well, I won’t go there right now.
I just finished reading a great deal of “stuff’ about
membership, especially retention. Lots of reasons our
members leave. I can tell you, and I will, from my 30 years
of observations: If the spouse and family don’t buy in, i.e.
support you in Rotary, you don’t stay in. We take time and
assets from the family for Rotary. So, Rotarians, when you
have a function, event , or family visitors, pay attention to
them! What will they say when they leave?
You want them to say good things. And, because I like you
and Rotary, I will cease this July ramble.
Your District Governor for 2012-2013, whether-you-like-it-
or-not,
Gaven

Avon Rotary Change of Officers
“Oh What a Night!”
On Tuesday, June 26th the Avon Rotary Club enjoyed a
Hawaiian Luau Change of Officers celebration. Special
thanks to PDG Norma Madayag-Reilly and her “retired”
Executive Administrative Assistant Gary, DG Gaven &
Kathie Hurley, DGE Ellen & Jim Hughes for attending our
special event. One of our largest gatherings ever with over
100 guests in attendance enjoyed plenty of fellowship and
witnessed several memorable moments.
2011-2012 President Kirk
Vanderbilt (at left) presided
over the meeting, his last
official duty. He certainly
had a great year in his role as
President! We welcomed 4
new members into our club –
Pam and Doug Hayes, Paul
Warren and Rob Lupisella.
We awarded
Rookie of the
Year to Jim Ryan,
Rotarian of the
Year to Julie
Carney (at right).
We presented
Paul Harris
Fellows to Karl
Sawicki and Dan
Jones. Perfect attendance was awarded to eight Rotarians.
Our ‘grand finale’ was our change of officers. President
Kirk presented the 2012-2013 President and Board of
Directors, charging
them to uphold the
mission and ethical
standards of our Avon
Rotary Club. 2012-
2013 President Laurie
Vonglis (at right)
concluded the evening
highlighting this year’s
theme – “Peace
Through Service”.
Hammondsport’s Changeover
Past District Governor Norma was in attendance when
Hammondsport’s Past President, Carmen Waters Kramer,
passed the gavel to 2012-2013 President Bernie Ryan.
At Hammondsport Rotary’s changeover meeting the
following Rotarians were given recognition (pictured above,
left to right): Paul Zaidel 2011 - 2012 Hammondsport
Rotarian of the Year. Paul Harris Fellow presentations to
Past President Carmen Waters Kramer and 2012-2013
President Bernie Ryan. Jim Keena was given the distinction
of being Hammondsport Citizen of the Year; and club
treasurer Terry Bilancio.

Past Presidents Day at Canandaigua
At a recent Canandaigua Rotary meeting, past presidents
were remembered and honored for their service to the Club.
The Club’s current President, Jeff Anthony a local
haberdashery, was also honored for his concluding year with
a special gift of 50 donated recycled ties, tied end-to-end
and wrapped around him in a wreath. The Past Presidents’
Day is held to raise funds from Rotary members for local
projects. A lot of fun stories were told for a small donation.
Pictured is Rick Hawks (left) congratulating Jeff Anthony.
Shutterbugs Find a Picture-Perfect Way
to Develop Skills and Friendships
You don’t have to be skilled with a camera to enjoy
Rotary’s newest fellowship, the International Fellowship of
Rotarian Photographers.
The Fellowship, which was recognized by the RI Board of
Directors in January, counts amateur and professional
photographers among its members, as well as those who
have an appreciation for photography. “Our group is open to
anyone at any skill level, from point-and-shoot beginners to
longtime professionals,” says Layne Marshal, a member of
the Rotary Club of Campbell River Daybreak, British
Columbia, Canada, who chairs the fellowship. “We have 65
members on our membership list in Canada, the United
States, Europe, Australia, and India, but that list is probably
incomplete.”
Check their website ( http://www.photofellowship.org/ )
often for contact information.

Community Service Scholarships

further educational opportunities. The four

their significant contribution to community
service during their high school or college
careers. The winners were (pictured above, left to

Community College, Nicole O’Connell and
Marissa Saunders who attended Corning West
High School and Carissa Speciale who attended
Corning East High School.
The student selections were based on community
service that they have volunteered to their school,
church, or community organization and
scholarship. The students detailed their
contributions. They also answered questions
about what "Service Above Self" meant to them,
the value of community service and what their
goals and aspirations were. Letters of support
from two of the supervisors of the community
service organizations they were involved in were
also required for consideration for the
scholarships.
Geraldine Wolfe, a member of the Corning
Rotary Club scholarship committee noted” It is
with great pride that the Rotary Club can
recognize potential leaders who are learning the
values of community service and academic
excellence.”
