Rotary Friendship Exchange

WHAT IS FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE?

Rotary Friendship Exchange is Rotary’s exchange program for Rotarians and their spouses. Friendship Exchanges allow Rotarians the opportunity to experience another culture first hand in the homes of Rotarians in another country. The exchanges are reciprocal and usually last about 2 weeks. The goal of the program is to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through person to person contact across national boundaries. D9790 only has participated in team programs where a number of Rotarians and spouses participate. Rotarians would spend 2 to 3 nights with each host usually in different areas of that Rotary District. The number of participants of an exchange can be from 4 to 10 couples but this number can be changed by agreement between the Districts.

Room for a joke or too. A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.

The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," say St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.

Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks, "It it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?"

As I reflect upon the past couple of weeks in Rotary and think about the forthcoming week, one thought is uppermost in my mind – fellowship! At our last meeting, we had a very entertaining and enjoyable evening with the Rotary Club of Greensborough decorating Cup Cakes! Over 50 members from the two Clubs participated and everyone had a great time. Much laughter could be heard and some new friendships formed. Greensborough are looking forward to hosting us for a meeting in the new year and whatever the theme, I am sure that it will be just as enjoyable.

Cup Day brought us even more fellowship – a pleasant and relaxing day giving Rotarians, their partners and friends a chance to socialise and get to know each other better. It was a great day to unwind and have fun together! Not to mention the proceeds from the day going to Foundation.

This week, we take the opportunity to meet some new friends through the Rotary Friendship Exchange. Six couples from Rotary District 2400 in Sweden will be spending four days with us. Meeting Rotarians from another country can bring us so much – breadth of understanding, develop our knowledge and the

involvement with new people. The days are packed with activities and I am sure that each of the hosts are greatly looking forward to this experience. On behalf of the Club, may I thank each of the couples who have offered their homes to welcome our new friends from Sweden.

If you have not been involved in any of these activities, think about it the next time that there is an opportunity for fellowship. Take that step and get involved. Our Club can only flourish and develop from activities such as these and the camaraderie and companionship that follows will set us in great shape for the future.

välkomna Britt & Per Gannerud Per is incoming President of Ljungby RC. He joined Rotary in 1990 and was a member of Malmoe International RC 1999-2009. Per is now retired from a “lifelong” career within steel and foundry industry. He is an engineer and during the last 24 years been managing director for a number of companies. As retired he spends his time working for Rotary, playing golf and bowling, reading and mending the garden. He also likes fishing very much. Britt has worked as an executive secretary in several big Swedish industries. She shares Per’s interest in golf and reading and she is a member of Ljungby Inner Wheel Club. They have two children and four grandchildren, all living close. They both take great interest in the grandchildren and especially Britt spends much time in helping with them. Inger & Dag Jacobson Inger is President of Växjö S:t Sigfrid RC during 2010- 2011. She is a Rotarian since almost twenty years. She works part time in her profession as a physiotherapist. She is working in a private clinic, earlier run by Inger, but now by their daughter. Inger has specialized in acupuncture and ergonomics. Dag has recently retired from his work as orthodontist and head of the orthodontic care in the county of Kronoberg. Together they take interest in their children and grandchildren. Inger & Dag enjoy being in their summer house, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, during the warm period of the year. They also enjoy travelling, wine tasting as well as sports like tennis and golf, Riitta & Sten Liljedahl Sten is the Team Leader for this exchange and was Governor in District 2400 2009/2010. He is a member of Rotary since 1987 and has just become a charter member of the new Åhus RC. He is district training leader and PHF. He is a self employed architect. Six years ago he sold his big firm and is now running a small office with only one employed – himself. He is interested in architecture,art and cars. Riitta is a language teacher and member of Inner wheel. She retired a year ago and loves to read and grow things in the garden. She is interested in old domestic things. Together they enjoy travel, being with friends, listen to music and do sports. Particularly golf, tennis (Sten) and downhill skiing.

Together they have three children and so far two grandchildren.


Gunilla & Per Gudmund Lindencrona Per Gudmund has been a member of Karlskrona RC 1975-2001(president 1988/89), charter president 2001 in Karlskrona Aurora RC and is a PHF. He is by education a lawyer and has for many years worked as a chief executive of Karlskrona City. From 1997 he worked for the Regional Council and before retiring as a coordinator of cross border cooperation. He is very interested in sports and plays tennis and golf. Gunilla is retired from being a secretary at Ericsson Company. Her main interests are literature and film. They are both interested in art, architecture, travelling, downhill skiing in Italy and they have a summer house on an island in the Baltic Sea. They have three children and three grandchildren. Iris & Bruno Steiner Bruno was President of Ljungby-Kungshögen RC 2007/2008 and is a member of D2400 RFE committee. He is retired from production management. Bruno spends autumns in the forest hunting for mostly big game. Iris joins him even if picking mushrooms have higher priority for her. Iris is a board member of Ljungby Inner Wheel Club. She is retired from being a Counsellor for families with disabled and mentally retarded children. She is interested in old domestic things. She reads literature and enjoys discussing what she reads with others. They both sing in choirs, goes down-hill skiing and sometimes go sailing. They have three children with six grandchildren who ask for engagement. The family spends the summers in their summer house at the Atlantic Ocean. Agneta & Staffan Zimmerman Staffan has been a member of Karlskrona Rosenbom RC since 1998. His last employment was at the headquarters of the Swedish Coast Guard but he has also worked in different companies for example Ericsson. Agneta finished recently her employment as a teacher. The last years many of her pupils came from different countries. In their spare time they play golf and tennis. They also play bridge and both of them sing in different choirs. In the winters they go skiing, both cross country and downhill. They live on the East coast of Sweden but have a summerhouse on the Westcoast. They have two sons and so far one grandchild. One of the sons lives with his family in Stockholm and the other one in Malmoe in the south.

Many members will have their own individual memories of Pam. She was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Warrandyte and a wonderful support to Alan in his Presidential year and beyond. A businesswoman, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, so much more could be said as we pay tribute to Pam. Her warmth and sense of humour will be always remembered.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Alan. May he have the support of all Club members at this very sad time.
