Presidents Report Welcome to Timothy Dark, it’s a privilege and pleasure to have another person willing to make the commitment to Rotary, and the opportunities we provide for service to the community. Thanks to Chris for being Tim’s mentor and to Megan for her work on making Tim feel welcome.

I’m looking forward to the next meeting with

John Michael Howson, and also looking forward

to the Days for Girls afternoon tea, there’s al-

ways something to do with Rotary.

Best wishes

Message from our own Peace Fellow Hi Megan and Peter, Hope you are all well. I just wanted to drop a line with a link to a couple of blogs I've posted this summer during my internships. I start back in a week at UNC for my second (and final) year. I am loving it here but looking forward to coming home and contributing to my own community again in a year's time. Thank you for all your support. Please send my love and best wishes to the whole Beau-maris club. Speaker: David Skinner

Topic: Drone Technology

David is Founder of Bask Aerospace and Cofounder and Head of R&D at ARI Labs. He has a Bachelor of Engineering (Aero) and an Adv. Diploma in Aero. Eng.. ARI Labs has recently acquired Bask Aero-space to help push current UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) technology even further. Bask Aerospace was founded in 2008 as part of a University project to develop a new type of UAV that enabled heavier payloads, longer range and increased time of operation. Since then, the company has grown to provide UAV platform, autopilot and sensor solutions that help meet and exceed the expectations of its clients. Today, ARI Labs is leveraging the capabilities of this new acquisition to deliver an extensive array of services across a wide variety of indus-tries and applications resulting in ARI Labs be-coming a key player in the global UAV market. While commonly known as drones David pre-fers to use the proper name of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as it does not have the same negative military association. Drones come in all shapes & sizes and are built for many different applications. The three main types are Fixed Wing, Rotary Wing and Flap-ping Wing.

Key to the development of low cost UAV’s have been the development of mobile phones with their associated technologies (low power Micro-

processors, MEMS Accelerometers, MEMS Gyros, MEMS Magnetometer, Digital Barome-ters).

Key to the development rapid development of the low cost civilian UAV market has been the Open Source approach which has allowed the rapid sharing of technology between develop-ers. Key areas for UAV use include; Golf course design and maintenance

 Power line inspection

 Search and rescue

 Parcel delivery

 Accident investigation

 Endangered wildlife protection

 Agriculture monitoring and analysis

 Security

 Fire fighting

David regards UAV development as being at a very early stage (equivalent to a Model T Ford) with a a large amount of exaggeration about its potential. However he does believe that they will become a mature technology which will de-liver significant benefits down the track.

Sand Waves Photograph by Mark Seabury, National Geographic Your Shot “As we floated over the Dubai desert in a hot-air balloon at sunrise, I was captivated by the plays of light from the morning rays of sun over the repeating patterns of undulat-ing dunes. It was like the de-sert was alive with motion, with sand waves mimicking the swell of the sea, extend-ing as far as the eye could see into the distant horizon. This single tree appeared in the arid earth as a steadfast symbol of life in impossible conditions—a lone survivor in a vast ocean.”
