Presidents Report Last Thursday we inducted our first new member in this Rotary year. A very warm welcome is offered to Bridget Hage. A clear sign of Bridget’s enthusiasm was her volunteering on the night for a role in supporting the club’s push into social media. And thanks to Membership leader Lynda Doutch for conduct-ing the induction so smoothly.

term supporter of the hospital and many of us have been grateful to use the facilities at the hospital. Whilst the cost of the lunch seems a little high it pales into insignifi-cance compared to the medical bills most of us are faced with from time to time. So, I am proposing we put a ta-ble together and I would like to hear from anyone wishing to join me. Bookings close 1 March so please respond as soon as you read this*. Finally, did anyone happen along to the Showcasing Ro-tary event put on by District 9800 at Federation Square last Saturday. News of this event only came through last week with an article in the 9810 District Events Schedule (sadly it did not make the agenda of the Presidents’ meeting held recently) so it did not make it into In Gear. We have Greg Mier of the Beaumaris Conservation Soci-ety (BCS) as our guest speaker this Thursday. The BCS has been for many years a very vocal lobby group in the Beaumaris area. Anyone interested in local affairs, and that should be all of us, should come along to hear what Greg has to say.

Yours in Rotary Malcolm

More players are needed, so please encourage your golf-ing friends and family to get a group together.

Currently 66 players have either registered or have ex-pressed interest, the target of 184.

Help and support from members will be needed both prior to and on the day.

St. Stephen’s Community Garden

The garden is now well established and gardeners have been harvesting their summer produce.

The rotunda has undertaken a facelift over Summer with roof repairs and fresh paint, thanks to Mike and Phil Hede, and café blinds have now been installed for winter comfort.

Compost bins are in place and the storage shed has been erected.

We are awaiting delivery of our water tank, the biggest expense so far.

The bank balance is still healthy and we will continue to fundraise to ensure that future expenses are covered.

Our Opening Day was held on 11th December beginning with the Blessing of the Garden by Rev Roger Prowd, the Vicar at St Stephen’s Anglican Church.

It was great to see many of our Beaumaris Rotarians pre-sent and to show you how some of our hard earned fund-raising money has been put to work.

Roger Prowd has been a great supporter of the communi-ty garden and will commence his retirement next week.

We held our first Happy Hour in the garden last Friday evening.

Everyone agreed that it was a great idea and we will be repeating this get together every 3rd Friday of the month

Working bees will be held every 3rd Sunday of the month.

You are all welcome to attend on these occasions.

Heather Chisholm

Notes From Club Forum Presentations Fundraising Farmers Market The Farmers Market continues to provide a steady in-come for the club.

Since we moved to the new site at Beaumaris North Pri-mary School in September 2016, the income from the gates has decreased slightly.

But BBQ sales have increased and raffle proceeds have been steady.

Every single member of this club, and many of their part-ners, have been actively involved in some way in this im-portant fundraising event.

Sixty to seventy traders attend each month and they con-tinue to provide a good mix of quality produce.

The Sing Australia choir returned last month and our uku-lele player Karen is a regular performer.

Alan and Lyn from the coffee van have generously offered to sponsor a duo to sing at next month’s market.

Alan and Lyn donate half of the money from every cup of coffee purchased by Rotarians.

Beaumaris North Primary School does not have the same exposure as the former site on the Reserve Road and Balcombe Road corner.

We are looking at new ways to promote the event to the wider community and to have more signage in the local area on the day.

One question that comes up repeatedly is:

Will the Farmers Market go back to the old site when the Beaumaris High School has been completed? We have the option to return and will consider our options when the time comes.

Bayside Mayoral Charity Golf Day

PKF $3,000

Golf bags & balls have already been purchased and more gifts are expected from other organisations

for more than ten years and was started in response to a visit to the island by John Manks nearly 15 years ago. John, Geoff Stockdale, Fred Hofmann, Ross Phillips and John Beaty have driven this set of projects forward over these many years and this same group has formulated the Sabu Solar Panel project. This project, with a capital value of about US$60,000 has gained the donation support of several Rotary clubs in Australia and Europe as well as from several individuals and a detailed submission has been made to Rotary Inter-national (RI) to secure an additional significant fraction of that capital cost as a Rotary International Grant. RI has responded to the submission by advising that, in their opinion, capital works directed to the provision of electric power to the school (to power computers and electric light for the benefit of students at that school) does not in itself advance the quality or quantity of education delivered to the students on Sabu. They are thus delaying / deferring their approval (and grant). While this view is, in our opinion, arguable the submission is being amended / extended to provide support for a Continuing Professional Education program for the teach-ers involved, to address RI concerns. This amended sub-mission has been made to RI and their response is await-ed. Malaria One of the projects which we have supported over the years has been Rotary Against Malaria (RAM) which we have supported by an annual monetary donation to the RAM project managed by the Rotary Club of Emerald and by donation of mosquito nets direct to Sabu. We have received a flyer from RAM for a Rotary Aware-ness Dinner to be held on Friday 28th April – and copies of the sign-up form for the dinner were circulated at the Club Forum meeting. Bookings for the dinner close on Friday 31st March. President Malcolm suggested that our Club might make a useful donation to the work of RAM by allocating to it the proceeds of one of the raffles we hold at our monthly Farmers Markets. Farmers Market Administrator, Heather Chisholm, kindly nominated the raffle at the mar-ket to be held on 8th April for this support and RAM is to supply two malaria nets as “props” at the raffle desk to show ticket purchasers what their contributions will be used for.

Recent Happenings Day on Oak festival – BBQ sausages, good exposure and fellowship I attended a Christmas Summit meeting with Bayside Council and various other groups including Traders, Church and Service clubs. Council would like us to be involved in Concourse festivi-ties and maybe Seaview. Concourse traders are keen for further discussion and will continue to invite us to their meetings. No representation from Seaview at the meeting, any sug-gestions welcome and I will pass them on to Council. We will full fill our commitment to BLSC with a $1000 do-nation which will be used to purchase T shirts for the members, presentation day on Sunday 5th March, Mary will represent the Club. Ongoing commitment to Matts Place. Sculptures by the Bay – it was decided not to progress the project due to the scale of the commitment required and the perceived level of risk. New Projects Sparse, thus Martins presentation re the Community grants process. Still waiting for a response from Impact re further support. Chris Werner International In 2015 /2016, more than 40% of the nearly $50,000 paid out to beneficiaries by the Beaumaris Rotary Club went to International projects and 2016/17 is tracking similarly. Of these projects, the majority were projects of other Ro-tary Clubs or Rotary Regional or Rotary International pro-jects – such as polio eradication, Interplast, ROMAC, Possible Dreams International, Disaster Aid Australia, malaria eradication and a Tibetan Village support project. Solar Panels Our major ‘hands on’ project, or set of projects, involves the Indonesian Island of Sabu and started with a water wells project and progressed to student accommodation and support to the present project of solar panels to pro-vide an electric power infrastructure to improve delivery of education to the local school. This series of Sabu Island projects has been running now

m-Adapt Another potentially important ‘hands on’ project for Beau-maris Rotary is called m-Adapt and is a mobile phone application designed to improve refugee women’s health worldwide. It aims to provide reproductive, maternal and sexual health information, and to collect data on need, so as to assist health organisations to analyse need and di-rect limited healthcare resources to areas of greatest need. It is initially aimed at refugees internally displaced in the world’s most desperate trouble spots and its unique planned capability will be to deliver the healthcare advice in the language of the women needing it. This is a significant project, both in the difficulty of imple-mentation and in the value potentially deliverable to refu-gee women worldwide requiring this assistance. The pro-ject arises from a Peace Studies Fellowship holder, Re-becca Bartlett, who made a presentation to our Club on the proposed project during 2016 which moved our Club to adopt it as one of our International Projects and to do-nate A$5,000 to its evaluation and development phase. There have been meetings with potential technical part-ners (including Monash University and Hitnet, a profes-sional project development and facilitating organization) and a plan to develop the necessary algorithms and mo-bile phone software has been formulated. Rebecca Bartlett, the project’s founder and leader, has made several presentations to other Rotary Clubs and other potential sponsors but with only a (so far) disap-pointing response. It is thought by the planning team that this lack of immediate support is due to the lack of a “prototype” product (algorithm plus software installed on a mobile phone) to demonstrate the viability of the project. Thus, it has been agreed that promotion of the project will be suspended for a few months while the work on devel-opment of the prototype (funded by our $5,000) continues at Monash University. This is potentially a project of world-wide importance but must overcome some development hurdles before that will be possible. Beaumaris Rotary will be kept informed of progress. John Sime

THREE COLD DEER

During a walk in the Austri-an Alps, Your Shot photog-rapher Bastian Hertel came across a group of deer. He approached slowly and none of the animals seemed to mind, so he got on his knees and waited until they got in a position he liked.
