(Sketch screen here noting color, place, size of graphics if any)
Narration: The Continental dollar of 1776 was the first dollar-sized coin of the
United State of America. In 1792, Congress established the United States Mint to design
and produce coins for the recently formed nation. Starting with this first silver dollar in 1794, called the Flowing hair
Dollar, the image of Lady Liberty was depicted in some fashion on the front of silver dollars for over 150 years.
Lady Liberty script: "You can think of liberty as a national symbol
to promote our aspirations for freedom. As the lines from the song America goes "My country tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty."
["America," lyrics by Samuel F. Smith 1832, music by Thesaurus Musicus 1744, based on the melody of God Save the Queen.]
Well Lady Liberty, thanks for joining us. The back side of the coin
(called the reverse) displays the American bald eagle with wings spread, ready to stand guard and protect America.

Narration: In 1863, during the U.S. Civil War, the Statue of Freedom was mounted on
the dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Very symbolic don't you think?
Lady Liberty script: "I showed up in the poster supporting the Union they
named "Liberty Brings to Earth Justice and Peace." Settlement of the vast Western states was encouraged by the Homestead
Act and the Pacific Railway Acts (Kansas is advertised in the poster shown here).
Just a few years before minting of the Morgan dollar began in 1878, a version of the light bulb, the phonograph, and the telephone were invented. It was a very exciting time.
Lady Liberty script: "Don't forget, with the discovery of silver in Nevada in
1859 the mines were actively producing silver that could be easily available for the production of U.S. coins."

was created to demand women's right to vote. Jacob Riis, a photojournalist, published "How the Other Half Lives"

Narration: Take time to reflect on your family's history during the years
when the Morgan dollar was minted. Here is one of my family photos, taken around 1916, before my
father was born. All of my relatives pictured here, except my grandfather, were born during the span of the Morgan production years--from 1878 to 1921.
The two youngest children, each shown with one of my grandparents, died during the Influenza Pandemic that started in 1918.
This Morgan dollar is very worn. But it was passed down through our family so it has special meaning for me.

In 1920 women were granted the right to vote and to run for public office with passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.
With the Roaring 20s also came flappers, more relaxed morality in the larger cities, and introduction of the Jazz age.

Screen size: ____3:2____

Narration: The Morgan resumed in 1921 and was replaced in the same year
by another silver dollar--the Peace dollar. It's because there was a great rush once Congress decided that
more dollar coins were needed to back up the Silver Certificate currency dollars.
Lady Liberty script: "The quality wasn't very good. After so many
years had passed since production had stopped in 1904, the pieces and parts needed to strike a quality coin had been discarded or lost."
Lady Liberty script: "I rather liked the new look of my image on the
Peace dollar. It fits the style of the Roaring Twenties much better."
Yes I agree. Does the eagle on the reverse side of the Peace
dollar look more peaceful but ever vigilant to watch over our country? It should. After World War I everyone was ready for more peaceful times.
Lady Liberty script: "I like the sound of more peaceful times."

[6. pause to display the question, then narrate the answer] The book and photos in "How the Other Half Lives" focused on life in the slums of New York city, and led to improvements in public services for the poor. The National American Women Suffrage Association was create and led to the women's right to vote and hold public office.
[7. pause to display the question, then narrate the answer] In 1921, the impression from minting the Morgan dollar was too shallow and was considered poor quality. Plus the image of Liberty was outdated for the times. A modern Roaring Twenties makeover was needed for Lady Liberty. And the American bald eagle on the reverse reflects the more modern but peaceful times.

Narration: So if you ever run across a Morgan dollar or if you collect them already, look at the date and the mint mark. Take a moment to ponder the history and culture of our nation during the life and times of your Morgan silver dollar. Thank you Lady Liberty for joining us. Lady Liberty script: "I enjoyed it! Let's do another topic, soon. You know my symbolic image shows up on government buildings, statues and on lots of other U. S. coins!" Well you certainly have an inspiring heritage. Lady Liberty script: "Of course I have--I'm Lady Liberty!"
