Rooted — Growing — Experiencing Christ March 2020

Dr. Luke

Do you like a good story? A story filled with action,

romance, fight scenes and lots and lots of intrigue?

Do you like a good storyteller, one who draws the

reader into the text and makes the reader part of the

action? If so, have I got a story for you – and one of

the best story tellers ever.

I’m referring to the story of Christ’s passion –

the moments leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection as related

by none other than Luke the Evangelist.

During the Sundays in Lent we will allow Luke to tell this story

filled with action and intrigue – a story that not only draws us into

the text, but actually makes us a part of it. By the power of the

Holy Spirit we come to realize that we are to blame for what

happens in this story – and more importantly, we benefit from

what happens.

There are a few things you should know about Luke. Luke was

a medical doctor, more educated than most of the people back

then. He was not one of the disciples of Jesus, nor was he ever

considered an apostle. He most likely never actually witnessed

much of what he wrote about in the gospel, but there is no doubt

he interviewed those who did. Since Luke did not have a Jewish

background, it’s easier for us today to relate to him and his

writings since we don’t have Jewish backgrounds either. As a

result, more of the gospel readings in our lectionary are from Luke.

Scholars admit that Luke has outstanding literary abilities that

are used by the Holy Spirit to bring the story of Jesus’ passion to

life. During the Sundays of Lent in our sermons we will consider

this life with the theme: “Let There Be Life!” Life that is ours

through Christ Jesus.

Birthdays — Anniversaries — Christmas parties —

your average Wednesday night supper before
