By Andrew VitelliFor eight minutes on Saturday

afternoon, the Pleasantville offense appeared dominant, a blowout seemed to be underway, and the Panthers looked like the football team many predicted to compete for the Section 1 title.

Instead, the Panthers had to battle to the end, but with a 13-7 home victory over Albertus Magnus at Parkway Field they also avoided what would have been a tough-to-stomach loss to start the season.

“Usually in these sort of games, you learn a lesson, and you have to pay a price to learn that lesson,” Pleasantville head coach Tony Becerra said after his team’s win. “They got away with not paying the price, which would be a close loss on the other end.”

For two possessions, everything was clicking for the Panthers’ offense. Pleasantville opened the game with a 55-yard touchdown drive, as junior receiver Jack Minerva took a short pass from quarterback Jack Howe 36 yards for the Panthers’ first score. After Magnus punted, Pleasantville scored again on

senior running back Ian Esliker’s 30-yard touchdown run with four minutes left in the first quarter. The Panthers missed the

extra point, leaving the score at 13-0.

After Esliker’s big touchdown scamper, the offense cooled down. In the Panthers’ following possession, Howe was pressured by a Magnus blitz and, looking to avoid a sack, threw an ill-advised pass that was intercepted by Falcons safety Kyle TenEyck. Though the Falcons failed to score, they managed to pin the Panthers on their

own five-yard line. Pleasantville’s offense never really got back on track and was held scoreless the rest of the game, though the Panthers threatened on several drives.

“We have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of talent, and a lot of the guys have a lot of confidence,” Esliker said after the game, adding that the team took its foot off the gas pedal after jumping out to an early lead. “The coaches stress that confidence can turn to arrogance, and this pretty much shows what happens when we don’t play four quarters.”

Magnus scored its only touchdown of the day with just over two minutes to go in the first half, as quarterback Benny Storms, despite a pair of Panthers lunging at him, hit Kyle TenEyck for a 15-yard score. In the second half, Magnus tightened its defense but still struggled to move the ball against the Panthers. The Falcons’ best chance to tie the game or take the lead came with around four minutes remaining in the game, but they failed to convert a fourth-and-eight from their own 46-yard line.

“They had a lot of opportunities. We dodged a lot of bullets with dropped passes and so forth,” Becerra said. “We were very lucky. They’re a good team.”

Esliker was the workhorse for Pleasantville’s offense, carrying the ball 15 times for 107 yards and adding an 11-yard reception. Howe, a sophomore who started several games at quarterback last season, had an up-and-down game, completing 12 of 20 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. He threw two interceptions, though, one of them coming just before time expired in the first half and having little consequence.

Minerva led the Panthers with 42 yards on four catches. Junior Brian Reda caught three passes for 22 yards, while junior Charlie McPhee had 30 yards on three catches. On the ground, junior fullback Nicholas Salzarulo had six carries for 38 yards, while McPhee added 23 yards on three carries.

Defensively, senior linebacker Tim Stelzl led the team with eight tackles (one solo) and a sack, while junior defensive end Tim Driscoll added two sacks. McPhee picked off a Storms pass

late in the first quarter, the Falcons’ only turnover of the game.

Pleasantville, which went 5-4 last season and lost in the Section 1, Class B quarterfinals, is expected to be one of the top teams in Class B this season. Though their first win wasn’t the prettiest, the Panthers remain confident that they’re primed for big things.

“I think we’re capable of a sectional championship,” said Esliker. “The only people who can beat us is us. It’s just our mindset.”

Next week, the Panthers visit Blind Brook. The Trojans crushed YMA 34-12 in their opener Saturday.

By the Pace University Athletics Dept. The Pace University football team is

set to kick off its second season on its new home turf of Pace Stadium, now with the completed Ianniello Field House overlooking it. Along with their brand new state of the art facilities, the Setters bring together a solid core and a strong class of newcomers, creating excitement for the 2016 campaign.

Head Coach Andrew Rondeau enters his third year at the helm of the Pace football program in 2016. In his time at Pace, the makeup of the team has completely transformed, and the roster looks better than ever. Coach Rondeau believes that the players in place, as well as the general attitude on the field and in the locker room, are prime for pushing the Setters to the next level.

“There’s been so much change here for the team itself and the campus itself too,” said Rondeau. “There’s a team that’s a lot more unified, a group of guys that understand the common mission.”

Rondeau believes the roster is as deep as it has ever been. A high retention rate and strong class of recruits have helped the Setters fill many holes, as well as create competition at each position that has pushed different players to get better. This has the Setters ready to make a leap in the new season, and Rondeau believes

the team morale is quite high.“I’ve seen guys work, they’re working

on it,” said Rondeau. “They came in with an understanding that we’re here for a purpose, and I see a lot of guys that really embrace football.”

The Setters have 10 seniors to provide extensive veteran leadership this season. After a thorough voting process, the team selected running back Delaney Wallace (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and defensive lineman Gavin Maher (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) as this season’s team captains for 2016. Coach Rondeau believes his players made a pair of high-quality choices in this process, but also mentioned other key returners that have raised their game to the next level, while also providing guidance and setting examples for the younger players.

“Jorge Geronimo (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), who plays on the offensive line, he really does a really good job of encapsulating what is important now,” said Rondeau. “Michael Scotman (White Plains, NY/White Plains), he does a really good job as well. Tyler Mason (Mohegan Lake, NY/Walter Panas) and Tyler Deneau (Malverne, NY/Holy Cross) on offense and defense were ultra-committed all summer, and that allows us to raise the bar.”

Scotman and Wallace led a one-two

punch in the backfield in 2015. They combined for 1,423 yards rushing on 192 carries, good for an average of 4.9 yards per tote. The tailback tandem also punched in seven touchdowns on the season.

Also on defense, Rondeau pointed out linebackers Matthew Corrie (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Kenneth Reilly (Washington Township, NJ/Westwood Regional) as solid players doing a fine job leading the defense on the field. Corrie led the team in tackles a year ago, while finishing second in the Northeast-10 Conference.

While the experience of many of the returning players on both sides of the ball will help Pace succeed both on and off the field, a new class of players hope to be the catalyst in a big jump for the team. Newly added freshmen and transfers have created a wealth of competition at multiple positions, and have changed the dynamic of the team in certain places.

“Newcomers will change the dynamic of our quarterback position, and there’s competition at that position like we’ve never had before since we’ve been here,” said Rondeau. “Newcomers are going to help us at the receiver position, and our quarterback has more guys to work with than ever before. And we have some new guys who will help us on the offensive line

immediately too.”Pace is set to challenge Millersville

University to open the season in its only non-conference matchup of the year. The Setters will visit Millersville, Pa. for a 7 p.m. matchup on Thursday, Sept. 1. Following that, Pace gets ready to open Pace Stadium and NE-10 play against defending NE-10 Champion, and No. 21-ranked Assumption College under the lights on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

“It’s really neat to have that kind of environment where we’ve been preparing for nearly a month, a month to the day from when we reported, and we get to play against a very quality conference opponent right out of the gate,” said Rondeau. “What an opportunity for an environment, what an opportunity to figure out where you stand, what an opportunity to figure out where you are as a program.”

Coach Rondeau, as well as the student-athletes, are ready to get the season going. While they are already excited for what the season will bring, they are all itching to get out there and finally go up against a team wearing a different jersey.

“We’re hitting each other too long and it’s time to get to somebody else,” said Rondeau. “It’ll be really neat to find out who we are and what we have, and see our growth and watch it through the season.”
