By Andrew VitelliAfter a methodical opening drive, the

Ardsley Panthers used a fake field-goal attempt to jump out to a 7-0 lead and put the Westlake Wildcats behind for the first time this season.

But it took Joe Ferri and the Wildcats just one play to respond.

Ferri’s 67-yard touchdown run kicked off Westlake’s scoring in a 46-20 win at Ardsley on Saturday afternoon in a game delayed two hours due to extreme heat. The defending sectional champions scored 22 points in the second quarter alone and with the win improved to 2-0 on the season.

“It feels great. Ardsley was a great team and this showed what we really are,” quarterback Rob DiNota said after the game. “I feel like we can compete for another Section 1 championship. I don’t

think anyone in this league is better than us.”

The Wildcats gained more than 450 yards on the ground, led by DiNota’s 185 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

“It’s another back in the backfield,” coach John Castellano said of his junior quarterback. “When you have a kid that can run, it just puts a tremendous amount of pressure on [the defense].”

Ardsley began the game with an 83-yard drive that ended in a six-yard touchdown pass following a fake field goal. Castellano argued that the play should be called back; it was caught by a player wearing jersey number 61, and players wearing numbers between 50 and 79 generally are prohibited from catching a forward pass.

After a lengthy discussion, the referees let the play stand. Back judge Deano Passariello explained after the game that because Ardsley was in a “scrimmage-kick formation,” meaning a formation used for field goal attempts, the player was eligible by lining up at the end of the line of scrimmage.

Westlake bounced back quickly, though, with Ferri’s long touchdown run. After punting on their next possession – the only time they’d do so all game – the Wildcats took the lead on their first possession of the second quarter. After a 55-yard scamper by running back Dan Grossman, James Gorman punched it in with a 5-yard run. Following an Ardsley punt, DiNota took a quarterback keep 40 yards for his first touchdown of the game to give Westlake a 21-7 lead.

While Westlake’s defense had its ups and downs, it held Ardsley in check for the game’s decisive stretch spanning the

first and second quarters. After forcing two punts and a turnover on downs in consecutive possessions, the high point for the Wildcat defense came with about four minutes left in the first half.

The Panthers took the kickoff to their own 24, then Westlake pushed them backwards into a fourth-and- twenty. A bad snap on the punt attempt led to a safety, giving Westlake a 23-7 lead. The Wildcats added another touchdown, this time on a 40-yard Gorman run, to blow the game open. Though Ardsley scored again just before halftime, it was too

little and too late, even with a half still remaining.

“We have a long way to go,” Castellano said. “It’s a work in progress and we have a lot of work to do. I think defensively we need to get better if we’re going to make a serious run at this thing. I like what we’re doing offensively.”

Ferri finished the game with 94 yards and a touchdown. Grossman added 60 and a score, while Gorman ran for 61 yards and 2 TDS. Andrew DiBiase had 58 yards and a touchdown.

“Our backfield is just insane,” DiNota said of his team’s depth at running back.

The Wildcats play at Valhalla next week. The Vikings are also 2-0 after beating Putnam Valley Saturday.
