Come on over and get your questions answered

President By Sandra Leach Presidents Comments at Residents September 2018 HOA Meeting I would like to welcome you back after the summer; however, the HOA board and committee chairpersons have continued to meet and work at their designated tasks during the summer months. I would like to take a moment to reintroduce to you, and to any new members & residents here tonight, your 2018 board and committee chairper-sons. (those introduced are listed in the front of the newsletter.) Why Join the HOA: The main reason for joining and becoming an active member of your HOA is solidarity when it comes time to negotiate rent increas-es, as our current negotiated rents are only locked in until 2020. If we do not have a strong HOA, let alone no HOA at all, the owners have no reason to negotiate. I believe we all know that they are not going to negotiate with each of us individually; therefore, we have to show a strong position which is accomplished by the number of owner resi-dents that are members of the HOA. At $15 per year/per owned resi-dence this is a small price to pay for that bargaining position. Social Developments: Social gatherings held so far this year – Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser, Get Together With old Friends, Easter Lunch with Newby, Me-morial Day with the VVA, 4th of July with Newby, Pool Party Luau and Labor Day party. Changes were made in the handling of Bingo, based on the laws of Florida and Marion County. It is important to realize that it cannot exist unless it is under the umbrella of the HOA and adhering to the law; therefore, the HOA brought it under compliance and it is mov-ing forward.

Q: What is the most important subject a witch learns in school?

President cont. Reminder of Future Events: October – Oktoberfest party November - Honoring of Veterans, Nominations for the board and reading of (changes to the by laws). December – Christmas celebration, voting for the board and voting on the changes to the by laws Final Comments: Volunteering – with a count of over 270 households, it would be good if everyone volunteered for at least one HOA activity – board member, committee chairperson, committee member or even an event activity. Please help because if it is left up to the same people they will burn out and then there will be no one. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Board members, the Committee Chairman persons and myself, to thank all of you for your positive comments and words of encouragement. It means a lot to all of us, especially when we hear comments from residents as to “why should we join the HOA – after all they don’t do anything for us. all they do is have social events.” Hopefully you know that it is a little more than that.

Oktoberfest Sponsored by your H.O.A. When: Saturday, October 20th Where: Auditorium at 5:00 pm What: Brats/Hot Dogs German/Regular Potato Salad, Sauerkraut and Water/Soda Free to green or orange card holders. For all others it will be a cost of $3.00 per person Bring a side to share at the main table. Sign-up will be at the desk in the Community Center from September 13th to October 15th.

1st Vice President Kathy Allen 352-509-2234 We hope everyone has received their letter from Cove on the purchase of our community. So many residents have remarked how much they love the name change to Rolling Greens Village, I agree. We all look forward to one day meeting Brian Sweat, the regional manager, who sent us the informative letter about Cove. Thank you to Naomi for hosting the Talk @ Latte on Septem-ber 13th. Clay Puckett from Waste Management came back to discuss some new guidelines for re-cycling in Marion County and they will impact those of us who re-cycle in Rolling Greens. Look forward to seeing you at the October 2nd, 7pm auditori-um members meeting. Thank you for your support of the RGHOA.

Anyone with a serious interest in learning this business and being an active role in its success, please contact me. Biloxi 2019 Trip By Rich Allen 509-2234 Hello everyone; I have been approached by some of you regarding our annual Biloxi Casino trip. I was considering not doing the trip this year after last years poor showing, but I decided to put this article out to help me make a decision. If you are considering on going please let me know by calling me or by email. My email address is ([email protected]). This year if you decide to sign up, I will require FULL payment at the time of sign up, not months later. The trip requires at least 45 paid people. I am looking at the date Monday, Feb 25th thru Thurs., Feb 28th 2018. “Ash Wed.” is Mar. 6th so we are out of there before Mardi Gras begins. Cost will be announced after I get enough positive feed back, and then I will meet with American Travel to put the trip together. I expect the cost to be a little higher because of a hotel upgrade. I am looking at the Beau this time instead of the Palace. Last year ($490 a couple). I am also looking at a half day in NOLA if enough people sign up. Looking forward to your response. Deadline is Oct 31st. Thanks

Q: Why did the skeleton cross the road? A: To get to the body shop.

Veterans' Day BBQ Please join your HOA in honoring our Veterans the day after the official holiday. WHY you may ask are we wait-ing to do it that day? Many of the restaurants in town are hon-oring our Veterans with free meals on Sunday. However, some of our veterans will not be there at our get together as they will be serving other Veterans at the Ritz in downtown Ocala. For those who will be attending, you will have a choice of a hot dog or hamburger on a bun, chips and water or soda. Please bring a side dish to share for the buffet table When: Monday, November 12, 2018 beginning at 12:00 in the Auditorium. Fee to all Veterans and residents with green or orange card. The cost to everyone else will be $2.00. SIGNUP: Will be at the desk in the Community Center begin-ning October 22nd and ending November 6th.

R.G. Library Corner By Barbara Critchfield What an exciting time to be a resident of Rolling Greens Village! It's a good feeling to be a part of Cove Communities and I hope everyone is looking forward to great progress in the days ahead. Mike and I were sorry to miss the recent introductory BBQ, but will catch up with all the news soon. If you've just received this month's issue of the R G News, you can be sure that I'm at home in Ohio reading it as soon as it's posted on the website. This is the last time I'll mention reading it from Ohio, as Mike and I will be packing up for our return to Florida very soon. We should be arriving in Rolling Greens by October 1 and preparing for the arrival of guests a week after our arrival. I'm looking forward to getting back to a routine of exercise classes, a bit of golf, social clubs, and visiting with residents at the Library and in the Community Center. I especially want to thank Jo Anne Fieschel and all the Library volunteers for taking good care of the Library during the summer. If travel plans are on your personal agenda, be sure to stop at the Library and browse through some of the beautiful books featuring all parts of the United States and foreign countries. You're also wel-come to use the computer in the Library to research any places of interest. See you at the Library soon.

Q: What did the little girl say when she had to choose be-tween a tricycle and a candy bar? A: “Trike or Treat?”

Q: Why didn’t the skeleton want to go to school? A: His heart wasn’t in it.

Area 4 By Bonnie Quackenbush Area 4 Director, HOA Board of Directors Wow! Things are sure rocking, rolling and shaking around here! So much activity going on that it is hard to take a nap! Wel-come Cove Communities our new owners. Hope you are all as anx-ious as I am to see things happening and the changes we are hopeful for. Change takes time, so everyone be patient. I had just finished my article and once again, not meeting the noon deadline, when suddenly, everything disappeared except for the paragraph above. No clue as to where it went, but here's the deal...for those of you who don't particularly like my articles or what I have to say, you will be happy. For those of you who so many times thank me and have expressed how much you look forward to them every month, I apologize. I take it that because it got lost, it was the work of the witches, spooks, ghosts and goblins! Happy Halloween everyone and by the way, this month you can shop for your Halloween, Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas decorations! You can find all of the October events in this newsletter, so I will skip that and just let you know that there are 2 flag displaying days this month. In closing....Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, let go of what you can't change, forgive quickly, take chances, give everything and have no regrets. Life is too short to be anything but happy.

Area 1 Diane Weingartner Director Hard to believe it's September already. Storms are aplenty. Please don't wait until it's knocking at our door to get ready. As of now we should keep the Carolina's in our prayers. Several years ago we had a CERT team in the Park and we disseminated a great deal of info to prepare. Last month the news letter had an orange insert in it and it was one of the best that I've seen in some time.....dig it out. Our snow birds will be back and I for one can't wait. We had a busy summer and the fall is looking to be a good one too. The volun-teer group has gone all out with events. It thrills me to see so many people step up to the plate to help. Thanks to one and all who did that. I'm also happy to see the park looking so good. Keep up the good work. If anyone needs help or questions, feel free to call. Bunny

Area 2 By Linnea Corneilson Director We are now Rolling Greens Village A Cove Community. We can see work being done around the park and as I write this we are eager to meet our new owners, It is good to see familiar faces on staff in the park. On October 10th at 2:00 there will be another "Meet and Greet" your new neighbors in the Community Center. Come and get to put names to all the new faces we see in the Park. You will find out about all the programs, exercise groups and activities that Rolling Greens Village offers. Refreshments will be served. It is October. Hopefully we will get a little touch of cooler weath-er , but still enjoy the beautiful blue skies and warm days for fun out-side. Halloween candy fills the shelves of all the stores and football fills our screens every weekend. "Octoberfest" is scheduled for October 20th and I hope you all plan to attend. Welcome back to those who fled north for the summer. You missed fun HOA events . The Labor Day picnic was well attended and the food brought by residents was won-derful. Don't despair-- You can enjoy the events that are planned for the next months. Please remember that it is not too late to join the 275+ mem-bers of HOA. The dues are still only $15.00. All directors will accept your requests to join. On October 12th at 1:00 area 1 and 2 directors will be in the community Center to hear any questions or ideas to make Rolling Greens Village a better place. Please join Diane and me. The next week Area 3 and 4 will offer the same opportunity. If you can't make the time for your Area don't hesitate to come the other times. I am asking that any one interested in collecting oral histories from veterans of several American conflicts to contact Ocala Civic The-atre This is completely free to the veteran. They will set up the inter-view, provide camera equipment, record the history, provide the veter-ans with a copy complete the forms needed for submission, and send it to the Library of Congress. Kim Long, is the chairman of this project for the Ocala Civic Theatre and this is the special e-mail address for the project: veteranhistory2018@ gmail.com. If you are a veteran, please consider sharing your story. Volunteers are needed to help with this project. 1) We are looking for volunteers to interview, set-up cameras, help with administrative tasks like scheduling, and to serve on the steering committee. 2) We are looking for organizations that would like to volunteer as a group. either to help the project in general, or to be trained to collect histories for their organizations. The theatre will provide the training, paperwork, and support, and will channel the completed interview to the Library of Congress. We will provide this at no charge. 3) We are looking for veterans who are interested in being interviewed-- veterans of all conflicts listed by the Library of Congress, but especial-ly veterans of WW11, and the Korean War, as well as Vietnam and the Iraq wars and Afghan wars.is scheduled 4) We are looking for donations. While there is no cost to veterans, there will be limited costs for materials, (each interview must be submit-ted separately) postage, and a bit of administrative costs. This project is in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of D-Day Ocala

Civic Theatre ,The Appleton Art Museum, and Reilly Arts Center are co-operating in this important project along with the Library of Congress - "Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center." Ocala Civic Theatre is presenting "Beyond Glory"- a one man show which tells the stories of eight Medal of Honor Recipients on November 15-18. I know that summer is a time when most of us take time to visit new and old places. Ed and I checked off a trip to Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Estonia, St Petersburg Russia, Finland and Sweden. We are willing to talk about it to anyone who is interested. It was a trip of a lifetime and we are blessed to have been able to take it. We would like to hear about your trips too.

RGVFD Memorial Service The RGVFD would once again like to remind you of a beautiful service that they have decided to render to every resident in the park. If you have a family member who passes away and would like to have a memorial service for him/her here in the park, the volunteer fire dept. is here to help. We will provide a beautiful table set-up, cake, coffee, and a guest book. If there would be more food brought by other people, they would help

to serve it. The chair person to contact is Mary McCarthy at 352-624-2901.

R.G. Fire Dept. Equipment Update to medical equipment provided by the RGVFD. We, as an organization, strive to serve our community in many different ways, one of which is supplying people with temporary assistance with such things as wheelchairs, shower chairs, potty chairs, walkers, crutches, canes, etc. We continually update the equipment by purchasing new things when called for. For information, or to borrow any of these items you may call: Bob Pennington at 317 828-2652; Mike McLinden at 484-1244, or Judy Crites at 724-815-6679. They will make arrange-ments with you for returning the items when you first borrow them.

Hospice of Marion County breaks ground for Memorial Park and Veterans Circle of Honor

(Ocala, FL – September 7, 2018)

Board members, staff and supporters were on hand to wit-ness the groundbreaking for a new memorial park, honoring veterans and loved ones. The magnificent park will feature a curved granite wall and a circle of military monuments around a flagpole; the site is on four acres of property named the Helen ‘Mimi’ Walker Campus. Hospice of Marion County (HMC) has four buildings on the campus, located just off Highway 441. The park will be located between Es-telle’s Hospice House and The Monarch Center at Sylvia’s, HMC’s new facility to serve bereaved families and the community. Funded by seed money, the Memorial Park will be built within three months, but will maintain an ongoing $250,000 fundraising cam-paign to complete the project. The granite memorial and brick pavers will be available for engraving, as is placement of names on the mili-tary monuments, representing each branch of the military. Benches and landscaping around the existing gazebo will allow people to remi-nisce in a serene environment within the city limits that feels like it’s miles away. “The goal of the park is to establish a permanent and peace-ful place of respite for those remembering a loved one,” says Rebec-ca Rogers, major gifts officer for HMC. “The park has been a dream for so long, and now it’s becoming a reality. We know it will be a rest-ful venue for services, events and gatherings.” The opening ceremony is planned for November 29 in recog-nition of National Hospice Month and the kick-off of the return of the Lights of Love memorial ornament sales.

An update on our “Share the Wealth.” As most of you know, the Bingo players have contributed to this for Francine Preston in the amount of $427. This was given to Francine for her up coming need to pay for medications after her surgery. Francine wishes to thank everyone so much! Next week we will start a “Share the Wealth” for the VVA (Vietnam Veterans) for 4 weeks. For all returning residents, to play Bingo please bring proof that you own or rent here in Rolling Greens. Your proof can be your permanent resident pool pass (plastic card), an electric bill with your address. Renters, you should have a temporary pool pass with dates of your stay. Both are ac-ceptable and remember overnight guests must have a card from the kiosk. The best time to get this is in the morning or afternoon (not at lunch). Please join us. I look forward to meeting you.

BUNKER SHOTS SHOULD ONLY BE A MATTER OF COURSE MATH

Mike Stone Abridged From Golf Magazine / Oct. 2018 Watching your ball sail over the green after hitting a green side bunker shot is a depressing sight for sure. This explains why most weekend players end up taking partial, timid swings that decel-erate through ball impact. The result often times is that the ball re-mains in the sand. A better approach is to take full, aggressive swings from the green side sand, catching the bunker about three inches behind the ball and letting the club slide under and through. The only question should be which club to use - based on your distance from the pin. Here is how to nail this frustrating shot once and for all. Start out by mastering the swing that was just mentioned. With that swing, most players hit shots from the sand about a third as far as they do using the same club on the fairway. So if you can get 60 yards off the grass with a good swing using your lob wedge, you can count on about 20 yards (60 divided by 3) with the same swing properly placed coming out of the sand. If you count on your gap wedge to give you the better part of 90 yards on approach shots, the same swing should get you 30 yards out of the trap. You may need to adjust a little, depending on the softness or firmness of the sand, but that three-to-one ratio is a good base to work with. Once you are comfortable with a firm, full swing out of the sand, you’ll quickly see why most pros think sand shots are the easi-est on the course.

Resident Speaks As newer residents we are not there full time and don’t know all of the nuances of the park yet. However in the recent newsletter area 4 Bonnie Quackenbush was “reminding” residents of respect and other aspects that really don’t belong in a report of the park. I took the article as being “reprimanded” for behavior in her eyes that may or may not be actual. I believe that personal comments and beliefs should not be expressed unless there is an opinion column in our newsletter. Can the board refrain other than conveying what is need-ed to know and the news of what needs to be communicated. I can’t believe I am the only one that shares this sentiment. How we as resi-dents choose to live is our business, if I need a supervisor on what everyone does or doesn’t do then the park management should be contacted. Please leave personal observations out of a community newsletter. Deb Hardy

The RG Web By Timothy Hilgeford [email protected] It’s been awhile since I’ve submitted an article, but with the end of summer and the return of our friends from the north country I thought I should update what’s going on. With the help of Abby McNeil, the activities page has been streamlined, if you feel your item was deleted by mistake please contact me and let me know. I am still in search of an assistant to help with the website, so if your interested give me a shout at [email protected]. Speaking of which, as I will be out of town the last week of October, no updates will be made from October 26 through November 2. As everyone is no doubt aware the sale of the Park was com-pleted and we are now a Cove Community. As information is updated it will be posted on the site as it becomes available to me. In closing I hope everyone had a great summer, but I for one am grateful to see it end. It’s been a hot one and I’m ready for some moderate temperatures and lower humidity.

Q: What do you get when you cross a Cocker Spaniel, a Poo-dle and a ghost? A: A cocker poodle boo.

Resident Speaks Testimony of a Golfer

August 13th marked my 5th year here at RG, I have made many good friends and witnessed several transformations of the prop-erty. So let’s begin with the golf course. While touring RG looking for the right home my sales lady wouldn’t take me to the golf course, (smart of her), had I seen the property I would have gone further south to live. I bought a home and eventually played 18 holes within my first month here. It took 3 years before I played here again. To say the course was a GOAT yard would have been an upgrade back then. Not long ago someone had a light bulb moment, looked at a map, and recognized that RG is in Flori-da, which means year round golf. The light must have gotten brighter to that someone and thought, “what if “ we made the golf course better and more people would be interested in living here? Let me say at this point that thought never occurred to the genius who said, “Let’s build a BASKETBALL court so all our 50 to 80 year olds can run up and down on the hard concrete”. What a colossal waste of money!! But I digress. In time the ownership saw what a valuable sales tool a real golf course could be therefore the improvements have been con-stant and proved the point that golf does sell property in Florida, peri-od! The fact that Jim Larner, the consultant, was brought in reinforced the commitment to improve the course but more importantly made the statement that going forward the course will be made a priority. Let’s set aside the beautiful water stations for a moment and the dirt cart paths. Clone Jasper! This brings us to the “Pro Snack Shop”! What a waste of space and revenue opportunity! The old, vacated pro shop would make an excellent lounge, perhaps offering adult beverages and having a few televisions showing sporting events would be a bo-nus. The RG golf association has a responsibility to its members as a whole, not to a few within any circle of friendship. Each and every rule must apply to everyone while major decisions must be made through the executive committee and not 1 or 2 individuals. As with any group, organization, club,

etc. there are going to be different opinions and no doubt conflicting attitudes with some colorful words being used and someone talking about someone else’s heritage, (sob) but as adults there should be common ground in which the majority can stand on. If an individual comes to a point where playing in the group no longer is enjoyable then he/she may be better served playing on different ground or at a different time. At this point in our lives why the heck would someone play golf and be mad before you even hit your first shot, or for some, what appears to actually be a golf shot. Did I mention clone Jasper? No one here was on tour nor will we ever be on tour so calm down and have fun. Downtown Terry Brown

Attention All Residents

While I've enjoyed working on this publication over the past 17 years, I'm now looking for someone who's interested in learning the ins and outs of the publication and playing a more active role in creating and distributing the newsletter. I've made many great friends in Rolling Greens over the years and this publication has brought me much happiness and fulfillment but as I get older, so do my children and grandchildren! That being said, I'm hoping to spend more time with my family in the near future. While my level of involvement in the paper may be decreas-ing, please be assured that I am committed to ensuring the newsletter continues as usual. Anyone with a serious interest in learning this business and being an active role in its success, please contact me. [email protected] 352-236-0007 Thank you in advance for all your support and understanding. -Donna Furce-
