Covenant and Connection
Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe that we have already celebrated our second High Holiday season on the campus of the UJC! It seems like just yesterday that we made our move from Hampton to Newport News…. Suddenly, our building is taking shape, and so is our sense of community and of connection as we adjust to our new surroundings!
Rabbi’s MessageI take this opportunity to thank our volunteers, as well as the dedicated staff of our congregation, and of the UJC, for making this second High Holiday season a true joy.
As I mentioned on the High Holidays, it will be our privilege and our challenge to maintain the positive energy of our relocation project and to work on deepening our covenantal congregational and communal connections as we move forward.
In this issue of the Messenger, you will see the first round of the “We Are RST” project featuring two members/families. Thank you to Meryl Kessler and to Karen Forrest for interviewing our featured interviewees and for bringing us their stories! And thank you to our members who have agreed to participate in this new project!
Clearly, our “We Are RST” project is only a small step toward fulfilling our larger goal of constructing deeper connections among our
membership. Nevertheless, it is my hope that this new Messenger project will pique our interest and will remind us that there is much more to our congregation than what we see on the surface. As a congregation, we are truly blessed to be a varied and interesting group of people who join together to express their connection with Jewish life and with Jewish community.
I hope you enjoy this issue of the Messenger and our kick-off “We Are RST” piece. But, remember, this project is just the beginning….
Let’s enjoy the gift of covenant and of connection as we continue to thrive and to strengthen our own sense of purpose and of holiness in life.
Looking forward…I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving and Chag Chanukah Sameach – a very happy Chanukah!
Rabbi Gilah Dror

This past summer, I, Dana Fraley, went on a three-week trip to Israel, with 80 other teenagers and no parents. To any other person, a trip like this may seem dangerous or scary. However, the experience has helped to shape my interests, character and even future goals. I am grateful for both the good and bad experiences, because they have shown me the truth about the country that I would never have seen elsewhere. Before I went to Israel, I always had a strong Jewish Identity. However, I felt conflicted about Israel. Other than religion, what is my connection to Israel? Why is Israel viewed with such bias in the media? If someone questions my opinion of Israel, how can I intelligently defend it? I was determined to find some answers. This vacation wasn’t like anything I had experienced before. For starters, I traveled with my Jewish Youth group: BBYO. Almost no one knew each other before the start of the trip. Because there were no parents --just chaperones -- it was vital that everyone was accountable for themselves. Going on this trip grew my character a lot because it forced me to make new connections and let go of any entitlement. Over the course of the three weeks, everyone adjusted to the rigid routine and learned to accept any situation. For example, the group stayed at a camp called Maccabi Tzair for several days. Meccabi Tzair was team-building camp for teenagers held at campgrounds designed to mimic military conditions. There was no air conditioning, limited privacy, and we slept on stretcher-like cots with no pillows in tents outside. Everyone was tired, dirty and hot, but we managed. After this experience, I learned to appreciate all the basic amenities I take for granted. What made this journey so amazing was that it featured experiences that most tourists wouldn’t see. For example, we went to Misgav Am Kibbutz, a farming community situated close to the Lebanese border. We listened to a resident of the kibbutz describe the challenge of dealing
with the attacks from Hezbollah. The group also went to the boarders of Syria and the Gaza Strip and learned about the history of the conflicts. It was very interesting to listen to the people from different areas share their stories. For example, while in Jerusalem, a few teens from an organization called Kids4Peace came to give a presentation. We listened to a Palestinian student in Jerusalem explain how the situation negatively affects him, and what he would like to see happen. Even if I didn’t completely agree with everything he had to say, listening to him was valuable, because it allowed me to see the direct impacts the politics had on him. This experience made me realize that in the end, most people want the same things, no matter what place they come from. Going on this trip inspired me to study foreign relations, and I plan on pursuing a career in this field. I’d like to give a special thanks to the Rodef Sholom Temple Endowment Fund, The Boris and Selma Margolin Israel Experience Fund (two funds, from Rodef Sholom Temple and the UJCVP), the Eric and Jack Luckman Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the UJCVP Endowment Fund. Without these generous contributions, I would not have had the privilege of having this experience and wouldn’t have discovered my interest in international relations.

What a wondrous and joyous Holiday season we had! Let me start with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: even though we were in our “nomad” space for the second year, I felt that this year was one of the most uplifting that I have experienced. As I mentioned in my daily announcements during services, so much credit goes to Rabbi Dror, Cantor Pscheidt, the Ritual Committee and the hundreds of volunteers that led portions of the service, read the Torah, greeted and welcomed congregants, set up the chairs and on and on…we couldn’t have done it without you, and please accept a thank you from the bottom of my heart.
We are also so thankful for our friends at First Baptist Church, who once again allowed us to park in their parking lot, to Steve Wendell and the UJC staff who worked so hard to get all of the parking, security and building access issues addressed, and to the W. M. Jordan Co. for creating our access for the holidays. During the High Holidays, we also held two appeals: one during Rosh Hashanah and one during Yom Kippur. On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, I made an appeal on behalf of the Masorti Conservative movement in Israel expressing how they desperately need our support. Robin Levy offered a moving appeal on Yom Kippur directed at sustaining Rodef Sholom Temple and all of the wonderful things that we do every day. I hope that
you picked up your envelope for each of these appeals when you entered the building. If not, they were mailed to you, along with a copy of the speech that Robin and I offered. Please take time and read these and donate what you can for both of these very worthwhile efforts.
Following Yom Kippur, we were delighted with the expertly-constructed Sukkah, that many members worked hard to build. Numerous RST meals and events took place in the Sukkah and I know that everyone enjoyed their
time in the Sukkah. As I’m penning this column, Shemini Atzeret is about to begin, and as the Rabbi mentioned in her weekly e-mail, this is an extra day of rejoicing! I hope you were able to attend services, including Yizkor during Shemini Atzeret. But wait…Simchat Torah followed closely, and again we had the opportunity to celebrate, as we danced with our Torah scrolls – what a wonderful season and what a joyous time to be part of the Rodef Sholom community.
Our new building is tracking along right on schedule and we are just starting to plan for a springtime dedication…stay tuned for much more information.
B’Shalom Steve Shapiro

Our new Sisterhood year kicked off with our traditional Rosh Hashanah oneg, coordinated by Janet Glasofer. Many thanks to Janet and her committee for a beautiful ending to the beginning of the High Holy Day season. We all look forward to being in our new building next Rosh Hashanah and the return of freshly-baked treats from our own members!
On October 8th, Darren Myers and Dawna Ellis from the Virginia Martial Arts Center in Chesapeake presented a self-defense seminar at the UJC gym. Everyone who attended--even those who were not able to participate in the practice part of the seminar--felt that the information was excellent. We were told to be aware of our surroundings at all times, train our brains to pick up details, know where the exits are in every place you’re in, and copy both sides of all credit cards and IDs: good advice no matter what your age or gender! Thanks to Danile Spokony for organizing this very beneficial afternoon, which started off with lunch in the beautiful sukkah put up by the Men’s Club and decorated by Sisterhood and our religious school children.
Our next get-together will be Sunday, November 12th, at the home of Beth Arager, for our 3rd year of Make It and Take It Meals. If you have a favorite slow-cooker recipe whose ingredients can be put together in advance and then frozen until needed, or if you have an idea of the kind of meal you’d like, please contact Martha Katz-Hyman. Before Hanukkah we’ll gather at the home of Judie Kavit on December 3rd for a “Crafty Afternoon”. There will be a choice of activities, including making a
beautiful kippah out of wire-edged ribbon (quite easy!), paper cutting, and a mahjongg-related necklace. Watch your emails for more information on time and cost (minimal, to cover the costs of ingredients and materials). We always welcome women who wish to be more involved with Sisterhood and its many activities. The dues letter that was sent in August has the entire calendar of our meetings for this coming year, and we hope you’ll come to at least one of them! We especially need help with our Mishloach Manot project in February, as our long-time chair of that project, Jodi Sarfan, cannot head it up this year but is willing to advise whoever is able to head it up. Please contact Martha for more information. Best wishes from Sisterhood for a Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful and happy Hanukkah!

The religious school bustles with activity both on and off campus! Our post-bar/bat mitzvah students are given several “Out of the Box” field trips during the school year. The first one this year: The Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond. At the same time, on-campus classes in our rented space at Temple Sinai had morning prayers followed by classroom time, studying holidays and Torah, and making time capsules of student work. Sisterhood’s Book Club also meets in the rented space during religious school hours four times a year. (See facing page).

A Day in the Life, continued
Rodef Sholom Temple’s Sisterhood Book Club had our first meeting on October 15th. We discussed Orphan #8 by Kim van Alkemade. Subsequent meetings will take place December 17th, March 18th, and May 6th. The next book we will examine (December 17th) is The Ice Cream Queen of Orchard Street by Susan Jane Gilman:
“In 1913, little Malka Treynovsky flees Russia with her family. Bedazzled by tales of gold and movie stardom, she tricks them into buying tickets for America. Yet no sooner do they land on the squalid Lower East Side of Manhattan, than Malka is crippled and abandoned in the street.
“Taken in by a tough-loving Italian ices peddler, she manages to survive through cunning and inventiveness. As she learns the secrets of his trade, she begins to shape her own destiny. She falls in love with a gorgeous, illiterate radical named Albert, and they set off across America in an ice cream truck. Slowly, she transforms herself into Lillian Dunkle, “The Ice Cream Queen” -- doyenne of an empire of ice cream franchises and a celebrated television personality.
“Lillian’s rise to fame and fortune spans seventy years and is inextricably linked to the course of American history itself, from Prohibition to the disco days of Studio 54. Yet Lillian Dunkle is nothing like the whimsical motherly persona she crafts for herself in the media. Conniving, profane, and irreverent, she is a supremely complex woman who prefers a good stiff drink to an ice cream cone. And when her past begins to catch up with her, everything she has spent her life building is at stake.”
I hope to see all the usual attendees and invite other RST members to participate in our lively discussions. We meet in RST’s rented space at Temple Sinai during religious school hours.Elina Blaha

Look at what’s happening on the UJC’s parking lot: .a new island is being installed to add “green space” and move the fire hydrant, which sits in front of our construction site, to that new “green space.” So watch your step as you traverse the parking lot coming and going from RST services and activities.
Have you seen the progress being made by the W.M. Jordan Company? Our building is under roof, outside walls are up, and the storefront windows are scheduled to go in soon. When that’s done, we’ll be “dry,” and “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” will stop our progress. By the way, there’s electricity in the building so if you come by in the evening, you’ll see the lights.
When you come by, please take a few minutes to peek through the fence and see how we’re doing. While the building construction moves at a rapid pace and the site work on the parking lot progresses, our Interior Design Committee remains hard at work making interior decorating and other selections. Robin Levy chairs this committee, ably “staffed” by Libby David,
Jane Susan Frank, Saul Gleiser, Joanne Gordon, Martha Katz-Hyman, Bonnie Katzenberg, Sam Margolin, Beverly Phillips, Celia Rinaldo and Andrea Weiser. Subcommittees are working on the landscaping for the Terrace, the sanctuary Ner Tamid, and a myriad of furniture selections for all spaces.
If you have not yet made your contribution to our new building, please contact Jenny David.

RST Men’s Club
Huge, heartfelt thanks to the Men’s Club members for re-designing and building our sukkah this year. Sherri Becker, Patty Meyerson, Elaine Abrams, and Kayren Segall’s religious school class provided this year’s decorations. Approxi-mately 70 members had dinner in the sukkah after Friday night services, and many breakfasts and lunches were eaten in the sukkah.
The terrace of the new Temple under construction is the future home of our Sukkah in 2018!
