It does not give me answers to my questions. It does not calm me. It simply stops me, for a moment. And, in that moment, I am startled. I am in awe. I am somehow awakened to the power of the moment. By association, I connect the sound of the Shofar to the sound of the Shofar of ancient times. Sometimes, I connect it to the moment of the Rabbi’s Message binding of Isaac on Mount Moriah. I connect it to the moment when Abraham heard the voice of the angel telling him to stop – to the moment when Abraham saw the ram caught in the bushes and realized that Isaac was not supposed to be sacrificed. At other times, I connect it to the sound of the Shofar that our people heard on Mount Sinai when we received the Torah. Within that Torah, we found and still find our directions on how to live as a free people, among other nations. Sometimes, it connects me to the sounds of the Shofar as I experienced it as a child....Whatever my association might be on a particular day, inevitably, the sound of the Shofar stops me for a moment. I am in awe. We are in the Jewish month of Elul, the month leading up to Rosh Hashanah. Every morning in Elul, Jewish communities all over the world sound the shofar toward the end of their morning service. Our souls gear up for the High Holy Days during the month of Elul. The sounding of the Shofar on Rosh HaShanah will connect with those inner workings. But there are also other powerful ways in which we might prepare our souls for the High Holy Days. For example, we might set aside a few minutes a day to reflect on our lives. Or we might set aside a few minutes a day to study the weekly Torah portion, reading and reflecting on one of the seven aliyot of the weekly Torah portion each day of the week. As we move into the High Holy Day season, I hope and pray that this season brings you and your loved ones a welcome sense of deepening of meaning and of purpose in life. Dear Friends,

I don’t know about you, but every time I hear the sound of the Shofar, it stops me dead in my tracks. It does not give me answers to my questions. It does not calm me. It simply stops me, for a moment. And, in that moment, I am startled. I am in awe. I am somehow awakened to the power of the moment.

By association, I connect the sound of the Shofar to the sound of the Shofar of ancient times. Sometimes, I connect it to the moment of the

Rabbi’s Messagebinding of Isaac on Mount Moriah.

If you come to morning minyan at RST on a Monday or on a Thursday anytime during the month of Elul, you will hear the sound of the Shofar.

Experiencing that sound during the month of Elul is one of the ways in which we prepare our souls so that when we finally assemble at services on Rosh Hashanah, we will more fully appreciate the power of the High

Holy Days.

That is a construction worker on a roof on August 23, 2017.

I hope you’ve been to services recently, or visited the campus for another reason, and seen the progress of our new building; it is truly amazing and literally changes daily. You can really now see how the building is taking shape: It’s no longer just a pretty picture on a piece of paper, sitting on an easel. I don’t want to jinx our project, so I won’t mention the weather, but we’re still on track for a spring completion. If you haven’t been to the campus lately, please stop by for services and while here, take a look at the construction project.

With summer, comes our annual Martin Damsky golf tournament and this year’s edition was fantastic! Beautiful weather, a beautiful course, wonderful fellowship, fantastic food and all for a great cause. A big thank you to Kenny Murov and Ralph Goldstein and the many volunteers who worked so hard to make this event such a success. It’s our largest fundraiser of the year, and if you haven’t attended in the past, keep your eye out for information next spring and come on out and join us. If you have participated in the

past, I know you’ll be back again next year.

Lastly, as you read this issue of the Messenger, the High Holidays will be with us very soon. Once again, the Ritual Committee, under the direction of Steve Meyerson, and in concert with Rabbi Dror, have put together what will be a wonderful High Holiday experience. The logistics may be a little different than last year, but if we’ve learned anything during the past 15 or so “nomad” months, it’s that we can be flexible and work things out as a team. As we embark upon the holiest of seasons, let’s reflect on all of the positive things that have

occurred at Rodef Sholom Temple during the past year and how fortunate we are to have such a giving community, filled with so many wonderful volunteers and an amazing Rabbi and staff! I wish you and your loved ones a sweet and good year and hope to see you at services! L’Shanah Tova Steve Shapiro

RST Men’s ClubHello Friends! I hope all is well and you’re having a great summer! The holidays are fast approaching and it’s time that we get together to discuss goals and objectives for the coming year. We have a large presence within our FJMC community, and I am very proud to be associated with such a dynamic group of guys. We should recognize individuals like Bill Becker, who is a member of the FJMC executive board. Bill had the task of coordinating the international convention that was located in Crystal City, Virginia in July. Roy Lasris volunteered to be the ritual chair coordinator for the convention as well. Sam Parrucci held the post of recording secretary for our Seaboard region for the past two years. Thank you, gentlemen for making Rodef Sholom Temple’s Men’s club shine at the regional and international levels. We need to have a meeting and I am suggesting two dates: September 10th or the 17th. This will give us the opportunity to have our agenda in order prior to the new year. I plan to make reservations at one of the local craft breweries once I get a head count. I would like your ideas and suggestions so we can move forward with a strategic

plan of action. You can contact me for any thoughts or concerns relative to our club. Your input would be greatly appreciated. My phone number is 757-715-1538 or email [email protected] to all of our members for all of your support!Johnny Parker, Men’s Club President

This summer has been a very busy one for Sisterhood. In addition to planning for this coming year’s programs--be sure to watch your mail for a complete listing!--Shelly Portnoy and Martha Katz-Hyman attended the triennial Women’s League for Conservative Judaism convention in Arlington, VA, at the end of July. We had three days of stimulating and thoughtful talks by leaders of Women’s League and the Conservative movement, including all five leaders of the Conservative rabbinical schools. We attended morning services led by accomplished WLCJ women, and we had fun in the evenings with women from every part of the United States and Canada. And...we brought back program ideas and inspiration that we hope will help our own members.   One of the ideas we came back with is a project that was introduced for convention and will continue this year: Mathilda’s Mentionables. It is a project to collect gently-used and new bras of every type and size as well

as unopened packages of sanitary supplies to be distributed to women in homeless shelters and women’s shelters in our area. We’ll be working with our local Jewish Family Service case worker, Libby Batten, on this effort. More information will be coming!   Our book club, led by Elina Blaha, will meet 4 times this year--the first meeting will be October 15th. Watch for announcements about the book and the location. Many thanks to everyone who volunteered in

August by helping with meals while Richard and Evelyn Mason were on vacation, and to those who helped with Barbecue and Borchu. Your assistance is very much appreciated!   The Rodef Sholom Temple Sisterhood Coordinating Committee wishes everyone Shana Tova u’Metukah: a sweet and happy new year!

7th Annual RST Damsky Memorial Golf Tournament BIG Success

Dozens of sponsors, dozens of prize drawings, and a record amount of money raised! The 7th Annual Rodef Sholom Temple Golf Classic in Memory of Martin Damsky was definitely a big success! And best of all, $11,000 was raised for the Temple.

Tournament co-chair Kenny Murov welcomed 72 golfers on Sunday morning, July 9th, to Kingsmill Resort’s beautiful Woods Course. The weather was perfect throughout the day. Dozens of generous sponsors & donors (secured by committee members Ralph Goldstein, Tournament Co-Chair, Barbara Gordon, Josh David, Howard Waters, Herb Garfinkel and Steve Shapiro) assured that the teams competed in a first-rate event. Following the golf, the players were treated to an outstanding lunch and prize presentations at Kingsmill’s Mounts Bay Recreation Center.

Special thanks go to Robin Murov and cast of her volunteers: Bobbi Goldstein, Sandy Waters, Lori Luckman, Cynthia Becker, Lisa Margolin, Sue Friedman, Robin Rubenstein, Bonnie Brooks, Bonnie Katzenberg, Barbara Rosenbaum, Kayren Segall, Cheryl Spatt, Celia Rinaldo, Roz Damsky, Ruby Conn, Karen Minkoff, Robin Levy, Frankie Levy and Janet Kruger for preparing and serving the delicious dairy lunch. And more special thanks to Judie Kavit for the attractive sponsor signs. And as always, the indispensible Tess Goldblatt held it all together.

After only seven years, the number of positive comments received about the tournament is remarkable. Many veteran golfers say that “The Damsky” is one of the best run and most enjoyable tournaments that they play all year and promise that they intend to continue playing each year. Thanks again to all those whose work creates such positive feedback.
