This began at 2:00pm when the Fire Station was invaded by 20 youngsters with the kind of energy that is unique when they are first let out of school. Dennis, Bobby, Tom and Anna seemed to take it all in stride but I am sure they were glad to see the Guard come marching in. The students were divided into 4 groups and given newspapers and masking tape. The object was to work as a team and build a bridge that would hold a coffee can full of rocks, and to be able to pass the can under the bridge. The kids could talk and plan for ten minutes, then they had to work in complete silence, and hand signals. Actually the teamwork was great and the outcome was amazing. There was a winner, and a near miss. The next phase of the program, after snacks, was a discussion on the dangers of substance abuse. The guard has a very effective presentation with open discussion and a power point show. We hope the children and parents that were present took it to heart. The grand finale was a cookout - hamburgers, chips, cookiies and sodas. Dan Peterson did the cooking and Charlie Borel was assistant chef. classrooms with characters, themes, and scenes from the class’s favorite book. Erin Nelson, parent of two Robles Elementary students and Altar Valley Parent Teacher Association (PTA) volunteer, awarded each class a special prize. Pirate principal Theresa Leal-Holmes was recognized as the Queen of Davy Jones’s locker. Did you know that reading is celebrated every day at Robles Elementary, with a top billing on each day’s academic schedule. All of the students and teachers spend several hours reading first thing. Everyone is divided into groups based on their progress, regardless of grade level. Students advance to a new group when they are ready. Providing reading incentives is a top priority for the Altar Valley PTA. Throughout the school year, students created reading goals and charted their progress. Pizza Hut certificates were awarded to all students who met their goals, plus they were entered into a monthly drawing for a $50 family pizza party gift card. Robles Elementary School received two grants this spring to bring books to the school community. Arizona PTA picked four Tucson area schools to receive a $1000 Readers are Leaders award, sponsored by McDonalds. District librarian Beverly Smith-Osborne’s book wish list will greet students in the library next fall. Tucson non-profit Libraries, Ltd. granted PTA and the school $750 to develop a conservation education library. Children’s books and natural history books about plants, animals, and the like will bring the richness of the Sonoran Desert into the classroom. Next fall you will see a native plant garden and desert tortoise habitat emerge from the garden beds between the office and cafeteria. The books will be ready to go in the fall to help teachers and students create a lively outdoor classroom. These three projects exemplify the opportunity we have to make a difference at school. PTA volunteers dreamed up these projects, and made

them happen with a little help from friends and school staff. The pride, joy, and curiosity generated by each project are priceless rewards that have a life far beyond each page we read on Dr. Suess day and each book we will buy through the grants. Consider getting involved with PTA next school year. You’ll find that it is fun and helpful to know other parents, and that your involvement builds good relationships with school staff. Don’t be afraid of too many meetings. There are lots of ways to communicate and organize projects. We need to aim high for the children of our community, and work together to make Robles Elementary and Altar Valley Middle Schools places where learning is lively, fun, and excellent! Most of all, read with your child this summer! Settle in

with a story and enjoy hearing your child’s reading confidence grow. Read out loud together. Keep books in the car to pass the time. Visit the library. Make a trip to Bookman’s used book store in Tucson into a special outing, and build your own library. Reading is the key to a lifetime of learning and adventure. Celebrate and praise the young reader in your household!

Looking ahead to the year of the tortoise! Gather your tools and paint your thumbs green. Be ready for gardening at Robles Elementary School next fall! A desert tortoise habitat and native plant garden will take form in the patio area between the office and cafeteria. Students and families will get their hands dirty creating a lively outdoor classroom. Robles Ranch Clothing Bank - What is IS and What it ISN'T.

The Clothing Bank opened it's doors over 4 years ago and we still have people saying they did not know that we are open to the public. Maybe it's our name - Clothing Bank - that is deceiving so here is what we are: We are a discount clothing store that is open to anyone in and out of our community. It is a place to buy used and some new clothing for the entire family at very, very, low prices. There is nothing in the store over $5.00 and most of our clothes run between 50 cents

and $2.00. Our clothes come from all over the Western States. We have people send us clothes from Washington, Oregon, California, Phoenix, Oro Valley and many in our own community. Our store does sell small household items that are donated to us (aka Robles Ranch Department Store). We are non-profit run by 25 volunteers and give all proceeds to the non profit group Friends of Robles Ranch, Inc. They, in turn, give to different organizations and groups in our 3-Points Community only. We are a small lending Library that you may take a book and bring another book back. Our store smells good and we have fun serving the community. What we are not: We are not a Bank like our Food Bank that you must sign up for to get clothes. We do not sell clothes that are ripped, stained, torn or very used. We do not have room to store any furniture or large household items so we are not a used furniture store. We are not a place for garbage or clothes in such bad condition that you would like to throw them out and think we can. If you have Furniture items that you think someone may be able to use that is in very good condition, please call the Community Center or Kate - Community Resource Coordinator - and they will get the word to us. We do keep a list of people who are in need of Furniture and will try and match them up with you. Hawaiian Days are back and we decorate the whole store with Island clothes. All of our men's and women's shorts are 50 cents and we have a very large 50 cents rack filled with an assortment of family clothes. NEEDLEPOINT AND CROSS STITCH ENTHUSIASTS - We received 3 large boxes of items from a store in Washington State filled with patterns, threads, books, magazines and kits. We will have these items for sale also during the

Book Fair at Altar Valley Middle School Submitted by Kathy Thatcher The Altar Valley Middle School book fair will be held May 8th and 9th from 10:50 am to 3:30 pm in the middle school cafeteria. Home schoolers please feel welcome to stop in and shop. You must check in at the front office first. Some of you may have noticed the bright yellow “One For Books” slips hanging up at area businesses. Please consider donating a dollar to bring much needed books to our middle school students. Your donation can make a difference. No only is the Middle School PTA holding a Buy One Get One Free book fail that will double all donations, but Scholastic Books will match funds up to a million books to three non-profit organizations dedicated to helping kids and families in need. The include: Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots. Talk about getting a bank for your buck? One for Book Slips are available through May 6th at the VFW, Ace Hardware, and Cindy Lou II. Last year the good people of Robles Junction/Three Points donated over $400.00 to One for Books, which, by the way, was more than what the Foot Hills raised. Also Robles Elementary will be holding their Spring Book Fair May 8 – 10 from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. Again, Home Schoolers are welcome. Please check in at the office Let’s continue in our endeavors to support our children by supporting literacy.

Robles Run Submitted by Kathy Thatcher Get your motor runnin… Its that time of year again for the 2nd Annual Three Points Motorcycle Festival. The event will be held on May 12th at Buckelew Farms, 17000 West Ajo Highway, Robles Junction. This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better than last year. The day will start off with a poker run through some of the most stunning desert landscape that the world has to offer. Stops will be hosted by surrounding area Fire Districts. First bike out is at 7:00 am. Pastor Dane Miller of the Serenity Baptist Church will be on hand to send the riders out with a blessing, and Kestrel

Kafe will have Breakfast goodies available for purchase. Most bikes will be in by 11:00 am and the gates will be open to the public. There is no gate fee. We are asking for a can food donation for our local food bank. We have lots of activities planned. A bike show with winners to receive trophies hand crafted by Three Points own Mike Thurston. Music performed by the renown country western group The Robert Moreno Band, Rainy Daze, and Hello I’m Not Johnny Cash “Odie Chandler”. Plus lots of local talent. Vendors, bike games, raffles, food and drink served up by our own Three Points Fire Fighters Local 3504. Kids activities including a jumping castle, Choo-Choo rides, puppet shows, and skits for the little ones, provided by the Friends of Robles Ranch and the Door Christian Fellowship, plus lots more. Festivities will wrap up at sunset, about 6:30 pm. Proceeds from the event will benefit our Three Points Fire District Local 3504 Adopt a Family Program, and the VFW Post 10254 Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Aid and Research Program. A fund day for the whole family, and an opportunity to support some amazing local charities. We hope to see you there.
