We have had a pleasing return rate for the letters. If you have been meaning to do but haven’t managed to send the letter back yet, please do so as soon as possible. I have included anoth- er copy of the tear off slip in this newsletter and additional paper copies of the letter can be found in the dis- play carousel outside the school office. 2020 PLANNING In order that we have a smooth start to the 2020 school year it is important that we know if your child/ren are returning to Beckenham next year. If you are leaving, and you haven’t already informed us please let the classroom teacher or school office know as soon as possible. Teachers will be meeting shortly to establish the class lists. ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE SCHOOL I am very concerned by some of the driving behaviours of parents/carers when standing on duty in the kiss and ride area at the end of the school day. Some are behaving in a manner that endangers the lives of chil- dren. Parents should know and understand the parking arrangements and road conditions around the school and teach children how to be safe in traffic (staff do this by teaching road safety in health lessons) Children are small, hard to see, behave unpredictably and are vulnerable Their lack of road experience means it’s difficult for them to judge dangerous situations Drivers need to take extra care when driving and parking in and around school zones, even when you think there are no children around. Drivers should not interfere with or obstruct access to nearby residences and not obstruct or park on footpaths or access ways. (Drivers should not use the school driveway for the purpose of turning around). Of most concern are the number of parents attempting to do a ‘U turn’ in the Kiss and Ride. Please continue along Railway Parade as you exit. I would also like to remind drivers that if you are waiting in the ‘Kiss and Ride’ area that you must not leave your vehicle. I encourage drivers to move forward to the next position, rather than stay in the same position. Drivers are then attempting to park in the gaps left causing them to mount the footpath. I have limited authority outside of the school grounds. I can only ask drivers to follow the rules. If parents see events that concern them the best action would be to contact the City of Gosnells Ranger Services on 93973000. APPRECIATION MORNING TEA If you have not yet responded to the invitation to the volunteers appreciation morning tea we would like to encourage you to take this last opportunity to RSVP. This will helps us to cater for the event and ensure we have adequate food to share. The morning tea will take place in the school library on Friday the 29 th November. If you would like to attend please call the school on 9278 3700, email [email protected] or text us on 0409 687 220. STUDENT COUNCIL EVENTS The Student Councillors held a ‘Crazy Hair’ day on Wednesday the 6 th November. They raised $250 which they are donating to Children’s Cancer Research Projects. Well done and thank you to all the students and their families who made a contribution.

Dear Parents/Carers

Last week a letter was sent home with students in regards to you receiving your child’s formal reports via email at the end of the year. We have had a pleasing return rate for the letters. If you have been meaning to do but haven’t managed to send the letter back yet, please do so as soon as possible. ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE SCHOOL I am very concerned by some of the driving behaviours of parents/carers when standing on duty in the kiss and ride area at the end of the school day. Some are behaving in a manner that endangers the lives of chil-

dren.

Parents should know and understand the parking arrangements and road conditions around the school and teach children how to be safe in traffic (staff do this by teaching road safety in health

lessons)

Children are small, hard to see, behave unpredictably and are vulnerable

Their lack of road experience means it’s difficult for them to judge dangerous situations

Drivers need to take extra care when driving and parking in and around school zones, even when

you think there are no children around.

Drivers should not interfere with or obstruct access to nearby residences and not obstruct or park on footpaths or access ways. (Drivers should not use the school driveway for the purpose of turning

around).

Of most concern are the number of parents attempting to do a ‘U turn’ in the Kiss and Ride. Please continue

along Railway Parade as you exit.

If parents see events that concern them the best action would be to contact the City of Gosnells Ranger Services on

REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE

On Monday at 11:11am the school stopped to remember the men and women who have served our country in the Australian Defence Forces in all the wars. I wish to congratulate the senior students for their presentation and to Mrs Hearman for or-ganising the service. I would also like to thank Mrs Knowles for the beautiful floral tributes created for the occasion. Dona-tions received on the day will be donated to ‘Soldier On’ an organisation that supports returned soldiers and their families. Kind regards

WORLD KINDNESS DAY

Students in Room 6 recognised World Kindness Day. This fits beautifully with our whole school Values program, 6 Kinds of Best. The students were asked to acknowledge an act of kind-ness shown to them and write a thank you note to the person

who demonstrated kindness to them.

EXCURSION UTOPIA

This week, the Year 4 students went on a Task-Based Mandarin Language Excursion to Utopia Bubble Tea House in Cannington. Stu-

dents had the opportunity to practise their language skills by placing their orders for a cup of tea using Mandarin. The ladies from Utopia

Bubble Tea House we’re very impressed with students’ confidence in speaking Mandarin and their beautiful manners saying “nin

hao” (hello with respect) and “xie xie” (thank you).

Thank you to Utopia Cannington Store for supporting Beckenham Primary School’s Mandarin Language Program by putting on extra

Mandarin Speaking staff members and giving all students a free up size. Thank you to all the parents who helped out. The excursion

would not be possible without your assistance.

Well done, Year 4! You’ve shown a wonderful learning attitude and I am very proud of you all.

Building secure relationships with our children

The quality of a child’s early relationships with you influences a range of long term outcomes

relating to their social, emotional, behavioural and neurobiological development (that is, how

their brain develops).

Research tells us that children need us to meet their needs in the following ways in order to

make our relationships more secure: watch over them as they learn, explore and take risks.

Delight in them, enjoy activities with them, help them ‘just enough’ comfort them when they are

distressed. Remember the key here is to respond with connection and empathy. When we get

these foundations right, we equip our children with a healthy self-esteem, with a sense of com-

petence and with the resilience they need to handle whatever life throws at them.

Making sense of maths

Talk about maths with your child in your first language so they become familiar with the maths ideas involved.

If your child is learning to speak English, taking part in activities will help them understand what you are talking about by seeing and doing rather than just listening.

Read all about it – books to share

Books are an easy, fun way to bring maths into your home.

As you read, add to the fun by asking questions:

• Who was the second person to arrive?

• How many people have brown hair?

• Who is the tallest person in the picture?

• What was the first thing the caterpillar ate?

• What page are we on?

Here are some great books that not only help your child with their maths skills but also with their reading skills.

You may be able to borrow them from the school library or you can get them from your local community library.

What if my child speaks another language or dialect other than English? If your child is learning English as an additional language or dialect, support them in their first language as well as in English.

HELPING HANDS BECKENHAM News Update: Halloween

The children and staff celebrated Halloween at the service. They began its prepara-tion a couple of days beforehand. Ariana and Yashitha helped us with Halloween pictures and craft for our creative wall. The children played ‘Find a Candy’ game without using their hands just their mouths and then challenged their fellow friends with a cup challenge.

Kitchen Garden This term we’ve started working on our kitchen garden. We have our own section of the garden (in the school kitchen garden) to look after and grow vegetables, herbs and fruits. We start the seedlings at our service and then transfer them to the garden beds once they are mature. The children also help us to maintain the garden by watering the plants, weeding the garden beds and with planting. Every afternoon, fruit and vegetable scraps are

collected to feed the worms that are a huge part of our sustainability project and it is an educa-tional experience for all children to re-use leftover food items in a construc-tive way.

Weekly Program We started the term with gardening as our focus area. Therefore, the weekly program was planned based on garden and insect themes suggested by children. So far, the educators have taught children about butterflies, frogs and bird’s life cycle, their habitats, and the food chain. The children have also had the opportunity to talk to us about their pets at home and how they look after them. We have added Remembrance Day into our program and the children were able to assist by making a wreath and some poppies to decorate the service. Trent brought in some memorabilia of his great grandfa-ther’s time in the service and gave us a great presentation on every-thing that he did while serving the country. Shivaya Saggar | Coordinator
