    Dear Mustang Families:

    I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the students and staff for their hard work and dedication throughout the school year. We concluded the year with many exciting fine arts programs, co-curricular successes, and a beautiful prom and graduation weekend. The graduation student presenters of Jacqueline Rhode, Mike Nugent, Marty Quinn, Korinne Yonan performed so beautifully, they enhanced the ceremony to be special and personal for the class of 2013. Thank you students and staff for making the 2012-2013 school year rewarding and enjoyable.

    The musical Grease was a huge success this spring. The musical incorporated many talented students to act, sing, dance, recreate the fashion of the 1950s, build a beautiful theater set, and play exciting music in the pit band. The Choir, Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Orchestra concerts were well attended and showcased the many talented students at Rolling Meadows High School as well. We also experienced great success within our spring sports programs, including Mid-Suburban League East Championships in the sports of Boys Tennis, Boys Volleyball, and Boys Baseball, with the Baseball team winning the overall Mid-Suburban League Championship. Congratulations to all of the co-curricular and Fine Arts programs for their many successes this past spring.

    The students throughout this school year led some very positive community outreach projects and school spirit activities. The junior leaders class in Physical Education planned, organized, and recorded a school spirit LipDub. The LipDub highlights Rolling Meadows High School and the link is on our school website for you to view. The students also collected over 4,000 pounds of food this year that was donated to local shelters to help families in need. The students fundraised $10,000 to support the building of a school for students recently freed from slavery in Tafi Atome in Ghana, Africa. There were many co-curricular teams and students involved in reading books to students at local elementary schools and academically tutoring students at local middle schools. The National Honor Society hosted two blood drives to support local hospitals and families. The Live 8 show was put on in order to raise awareness and funds for Autism. The fundraising of $6,,000 to support a Rolling Meadows High School family in need at the spring pancake breakfast. And. there is so much more to say about the community outreach that the students and staff have been involved in this year. It has been a fantastic and amazing year for community outreach.

    My hope is that you read the last newsletter that highlighted some of our elective programs of Autos, Project Lead The Way and Engineering, and the ProStart foods program. I wanted to provide you with an update concerning our facilities for the Project Lead The Way program, as well as the childcare room. As a side note, the ProStart foods lab was just replaced from the original foods room from 1971 during the summer of 2011. The upgrade was necessary to meet the ProStart industry standards requirements.

    This summer the childcare room will be updated. The carpet will be removed and replaced with a new tile floor. New carpet is being purchased, and will be placed over much of the tile for the comfort of the little children during activities. The classroom will be painted and additional windows will be added to brighten up the room with natural sunlight.

    The Project Lead The Way facilities will include the redesign of Room C111, from a forum room, to an A+ Computer Repair and Design classroom. Room C115 will convert from a one classroom open facility to have two enclosed classrooms that are connected to a manufacturing, engineering and design room. The classes to be run in the new C115 rooms will be Introduction to Engineering and Design, National Institute for Metal Working Skills courses, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and hopefully in the near future, Principles of Engineering. These facility upgrades will support the academic and elective programs and opportunities available to students in the Career and Technical Education Department.

    I wish you all a safe and happy summer. I look forward to greeting all the students back to school on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. As a reminder, the freshmen orientation will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 7:30 AM 11:30 AM. Students will need to arrive at Rolling Meadows High School by 7:20 AM. The orientation is a valuable time when freshmen have the opportunity to work with some of our student leaders in the building, called the Mighty Mustang Mentors, counselors, and the leadership team. The activities are designed to support students new to Rolling Meadows High School an opportunity to have a more efficient, knowledgeable, and welcoming first day at high school.

    Reprint of News Release, 5 June 2013 Illinois High School Teacher Elected to BSCS Board COLORADO SPRINGS: Rolling Meadows High School science teacher and Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Fellow Stephen Traphagen was recently elected to the BSCS Board of Directors. BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) is a preeminent science education organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Founded in 1958, BSCS strives to transform science teaching and learning through research and development that strengthens learning environments and inspires a global community of scientifically literate citizens. The board of directors plays an important role in guiding the organization forward to meet this mission.

    Mr. Traphagen will be an important member of the board because of his role as a classroom teacher. BSCS Executive Director Janet Carlson said, The input of high-quality teachers such as Stephen enables BSCS to more effectively translate research into practice and make a difference in how kids learn science, and I look forward to working with him. Stephen Traphagen has taught high school biology, AP biology, and chemistry at Rolling Meadows since 2011. Prior to Rolling Meadows, Traphagen taught science at English High School, served as Adjunct Professor of Biology at Cambridge College, was a Boston Teacher Resident at Fenway High School, and served as Visiting Assistant Professor at DePaul University.

    Traphagen is a member of the BSCS/NABT AP Biology Leadership Academy, a two-year professional development program designed to develop a new generation of leaders in biology education. The Academy works to cultivate a critical mass of leaders and change agents who truly understand the AP Biology Curriculum Framework and are able to design and teach a course that exemplifies the framework and lead their colleagues through the implementation of the new framework.

    Traphagen holds an M.Ed. in Secondary Education, an M.S. in Biological Sciences, and a B.S. in Biology. He has presented at national science education conferences including NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) and NABT (National Association of Biology Teachers). The BSCS Board of Directors is composed of educators, educational researchers, scientists, and business leaders from across the country who are committed to improving STEM education. BSCS board members take an active leadership role in the organization by defining directions for the future of the organization as it strives to transform the teaching and learning of science.     National Technical Honor SocietyThe National Te c h n i c a l H o n o r S o c i e t y ( N T H S ) was started in District 214 seven years ago to honor senior students that have excelled in classes in either business, computers, family and consumer sciences, or technology. The purpose of the NTHS organization is to reward excellence in workforce education; to develop self-esteem and pride and encourage students to reach for higher levels of achievement; to promote business and industrys critical work-place values: honesty, responsibility, initiative, teamwork, productivity, leadership, and citizenship; to help schools build and maintain effective partnerships with local business and industry; and to champion a stronger, more positive, image for workforce education in America .

    Students are nominated by their teachers for entry into NTHS. Students are to have taken three or more courses in their area of study, maintained high grades and good attendance, participated in students organizations

    (DECA, FCCLA, FTA, Skills USA, Robotics, Interact, Service Learning, Student Government, etc.), and demonstrated exemplary personal and professional conduct, exceptional character, and good citizenship.

    Summer greetings! Hopefully this summer is turning out to be all that you want it to be. Be forewarned, these months seem to move the fastest and soon it will be time for students to return to Rolling Meadows High School (RMHS) some for their final year. With that in mind, this article will share some information that could be helpful to RMHS students and families - especially juniors, seniors and their parents/guardians.

    Incoming seniors were encouraged to use their junior year and junior summer to do their college research. When they return to school this fall they should have identified the list of schools to which they plan to apply. All seniors applying to colleges are encouraged to have their applications and transcripts sent (postmarked) to the schools they are applying to by November 1 (or before). Students are only advantaged when abiding by the recommended November 1 (or before) deadline. Submitting after November 1 can disadvantage some students. Students and parents are also reminded of the 15 school day processing time required to guarantee that materials to be sent will meet specific deadline dates. That means to guarantee a November 1 postmark students should turn in their materials by October 8. For more information on the 15-day policy please go to:

    To understand the amount of activity in the CCR, and part of the reason why we have a 15-day policy, as of June 6 of the 2012 - 2013 school year:

    1415 applications and/or transcript requests processed 220 different colleges/universities were applied to by the class of 2012 127 individual senior/family consultations were scheduled 34 individual junior/family consultations were scheduled

    93 1st semester college visits to the CCR were scheduled 24 2nd semester college visits to the CCR were scheduled

    The class of 2014 can jump start the application season. Why wait to start applications until the fall? Students can visit college websites, beginning in July and checking back periodically as needed, to see if the schools they have chosen to apply to have posted their application and/or essay questions (if applicable). Students who will be using the Common Application to apply can set up their account and begin the process after August 1, 2013. Any accounts established, or data entered, before August lst will be wiped out. For more information on the Common Application visit:

    If any seniors will be needing a letter, or letters, of recommendation as part of their application they should ask the person whom they are requesting to write the letter as early in the school year as possible. They are also encouraged to provide additional information about themselves when they request the letters. They can complete, and then print the recommendation information under the about me tab in their Naviance account or they can download and complete the Student Information for Recommendation Form from the CCR webpage at:

    Juniors (class of 2014) are also encouraged to visit the CCR website and their Naviance accounts, which they set up during a sophomore guidance program, to assist them in their college search and application process.

    On a final note, parents and students alike are urged to be cautious of scholarship scams. Be careful with any scholarships offering guaranteed or your money back, or you cant get this information anywhere else. Never give your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship. If you receive any mailings inviting you to free college financing workshops, you can attend the events to pick up any free information offered, but think twice when asked to pay for additional services.     July 2013: ACT: Registration for all ACT test dates for the 2013-14 school year

    Registration for 2013-14 ACT Exams will open online after July 1st. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org. Students will be required to upload their photo at the time they register. The uploaded photo will be printed on the students admission ticket and on the roster the testing

    staff uses to check in students on the day of the test. On test day, testing staff must match the uploaded photo with the roster and the students ID. After testing, the uploaded photo will be available to the high school the student attends.

    The PSAT/NMSQT will be offered at RMHS on Saturday, October 19, 2013. This preliminary SAT test qualifies Juniors for the prestigious National Merit Scholarships. It enables Juniors who score at high levels to qualify for college scholarships. This test measures verbal reasoning and mathematics skills. This is a Junior year practice for college entrance exams and can be used as a predictor of SAT scores.

    The PSAT is optional but recommended for sophomores in the upper 50% of their class who want the experience of taking an SAT formatted test before their junior year. Sophomores do not qualify for scholarships or testing accommodations. Registration information will be available after September 4 in the Assessment Center.

    Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) TEST

    Thursday, November 14, 2013 AT FOREST VIEW The ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students. Registration through the Assessment Center will begin in the fall.

    New Immunization Requirement in Schools

    The Illinois Department of Public Health now requires all students entering grade six through twelve who have not already received Tdap, to receive 1 Tdap dose regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT, or Td dose. The cases of Pertussis (whooping cough) in Illinois have increased in 2011, which has caused these new recommendations by the Illinois Department of Public Health. What does this mean to you and your student? Your student may have already received the Pertussis vaccine but it has not been specified on their immunization form. Please ask your doctor if your student has received the Pertussis vaccine and have them provide the date it was given and a doctors signature. If they have not received it, you are required to get this vaccination for your child. Your child will be subject to exclusion as described in the school code of Illinois.     Estimados padres y madres, Sirva la presente para informarle que al principio del prximo ao escolar, en el otoo de 2013, se requerir que todos los estudiantes que entran, avanzan o transfieren a los grados 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 y 12 muestren evidencia de haber recibido una dosis de la vacuna Tdap (combinacin de ttano, difteria y tos ferina), sin importar el tiempo que ha pasado desde la ltima vez que recibieron una dosis de DTap, DT o Tdi. Este requisito es importante ya que la tos ferina sigue ocurriendo en muchas comunidades de Illinois, y la vacunacin de nios y adolescentes reduce la enfermedad y el ausentismo entre estudiantes de edad escolar. When making appointments for your senior pictures you need to set up an appointment with HR Imaging (Root Studios) in order for your picture to be included in the yearbook and in the graduation slide show.     There are openings available for the 2013-2014 Rolling Meadows High School Mini-Mustang Preschool Program for children ages three to five. The Mini Mustangs meet every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There is still availability in the afternoon

    session from 1:45 2:45 beginning in mid-February 2014.

    High school teachers are trained to offer all students a high-quality education in a caring environment. The program prides itself on a one-to-one student to teacher ratio, which offers individualized attention to each preschooler. The Mini-Mustang Preschool also

    provides inclusive education for students with special needs.

    Dear Parents, Your student is enrolled in an English course for the upcoming school year. Township High School District 214s English courses provide instruction and skill development focused on the areas of reading, writing and critical thinking skills. In the area of reading, English teachers will provide contextual and literary analysis experiences that enhance students personal connections to the text. A specific reading strategy included in this instruction is annotation. Annotation encourages critical reading through the use of symbols, marginal notes, essential questions, and connections both to and in the text. The process of annotation allows students to maximize these personal connections in order to create meaning, analyze, and interact with text in a way that is vital to their understanding. District 214 students will be afforded the opportunity to examine text closely and critically through the use of their own paperback novel(s). The attached list includes the title and ISBN number for the novels required for purchase in each English course at your students high school. Each listing indicates the semester in which the novel will be read. This will assist with your purchasing timeline. Students eligible and approved for a fee waiver will have the materials provided for them. If a course indicates Not Applicable there are no materials required for purchase. Students and parents are free to purchase the listed paperback novels at any retail or online vendor, i.e., Amazon.com, in order to access the best available pricing.     Rolling Meadows High School STUDENT DRIVING & PARKING LOT REGULATIONS

    INFORMATION Driving a vehicle on campus is a privilege that requires adherence to the rules below and the student handbook. 1. You must be a licensed driver and will have a valid 2013-2014 parking sticker in order to park in the

    student lot. I agree to use only the tag I have purchased and understand that my sticker is nontransferable and can only be used by me in my car.

    2. You must purchase a Temporary pass if I choose to park in the lot without a valid 2013-2014 parking

    sticker. Temporary passes are to be purchased from the attendance office for $5.00 per day. 3. Student must park in the DESIGNATED STUDENT PARKING AREAS ONLY! Map of the

    parking areas is on the back of this sheet.

    4. Student may only leave campus in cars during their scheduled lunch period, or the completion of their school day. Cutting class will result in loss of parking privileges.

    5. If a student reaches a total of 40 block absences (parental or unexcused) their driving privileges may

    be revoked for the remainder of the semester. There will be no refund of parking fees.

    6. Students who violate any rules or regulations concerning parking or driving on campus will be disciplined according, but not limited to these guidelines:

    1st Offense: Emergency parking fee of $5.00 and warned that a future occurrence can

    result in a loss of parking privileges. 2nd Offense: Emergency Parking Fee: $5.00 parent notified of violation. Warned that

    next occurrence will result in a towed vehicle. 3rd Offense: Vehicle Towed at owners expense!

    Seniors and Juniors

    1. ALL registration and Outstanding Fees/Fines Must Be Paid! 2. Return the fully completed Parking Permit Application and form with an attached check made out to

    RMHS for $190.00. Any incomplete forms will not be considered for a permit. 3. The form must be postmarked before August 2, 2013. 4. Parking stickers are to be placed in the lower left hand corner of the driver side windshield. Parking

    stickers are not transferable to other vehicles or persons! 5. Students must park in assigned number spot. Failure to do so will result in removal of vehicle. 6. No refunds of parking fees are given to any students resulting from a revocation of parking privileges. 7. Parking spots will be issued to seniors first. Once that is complete we will issue parking spots to

    juniors based upon the submission date of application and fees.

    STUDENT DRIVING & PARKING LOT REGULATIONS

    1. Student must observe the Illinois Rules of the Road and park only in the designated parking areas. 2013-2014 fee is $190.00.

    2. Cruising the parking lot or loitering in or about cars before, during or after school is not permitted.

    3. Unoccupied cars must be kept locked at all times. School board policies and insurance coverage do not cover damage or harm to private vehicles. The owner of the vehicle must assume all losses.

    4. Students may only leave campus in cars during their scheduled lunch periods, or at the completion of their school day.

    5. Noncompliance with aforementioned driving regulations can result in revocation of the driving permit/parking privilege.

    6. Speeding, exhibition driving, (spinning car around, sliding, spinning tires, etc.) or driving with a person on the outside of the car (on the

    hood, trunk, fender, etc.) will be reason for immediate and permanent revocation of driving privileges.

    7. Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. Rolling Meadows High School will regulate the use of the parking lot during school hours and activities. Only students who have been granted permission by the school will be permitted to park in the lot during school hours. The school retains the authority to conduct routine inspections of student parking lots and searches of vehicles in the lot. School officials have the right to search a vehicle when they have reasonable suspicion that illegal or unauthorized materials may be present. Such inspections may be conducted without notice, without student consent and without a search warrant.

    8. The issuance of this parking permit does not assure a parking space.

    In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide applications on school property. The term pesticide includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits, and rodenticide baits.

For the 2009-2010 school year, lunch is available at all elementary schools for $2.50.     A NEW Electronic Direct Certification System has been implemented statewide. The DHS and ISBE are working with Schools to provide a file transfer and match of eligible students. Each student currently receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (commonly referred to as the Food Stamp Program) and/or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) from the DHS will be mailed a letter of eligibility for free meals at the end of July from District 214. If you have received one of these letters, you do not need to fill out a lunch application as well.

    PREPAY SYSTEM FOR MEAL SERVICE

    The Food Services Department of District 214 has a computerized debit system in our schools that allows parents to prepay for school food services. This computerization provides many benefits for students and parents in utilizing the cafeteria services. You can prepay online using a credit card or at the school cafeteria office. Please review the following information to aid you in better understanding this program.

    Township High School District 214 Food Service Department Prepay System for Meal Service How does the prepaid system work? The computerized system uses the student I.D. card to allow students and parents to establish a prepaid account. The account may be used for breakfast, lunch and a la carte service. At the end of the cafeteria line, after the student has selected his/her meal choices, he/she will need to present the student identification card to the cashier. What are the advantages of the prepaid system? Payment can be made by check or credit card on a weekly or monthly basis instead of giving your student cash for meals. This system is convenient for parents and students. The prepayment system will provide faster service to students while helping students develop budget skills. Parents can also monitor what their students are purchasing regardless of payment method. How is the prepaid account established? There are several ways to establish a prepaid account for your students: By check or cash - To establish a prepaid account for your student, a form is included below. Additional forms may be picked up in the school cafeteria or can be printed from the food service department website. We are located at www.d214.org under Finance and Operations, Foods Service Tab. Complete the form and send it with cash or a check payable to your student's school cafeteria. A completed form should accompany all payments. By credit card To set up an online account at myLunchMoney.com, go to https://www.myLunchMoney.com and click on register for an account. Follow the instructions given to set up your students account. A convenience fee of $1.95 will be added to your credit card for each deposit made per site. If you have more than one student in the same school, you will be charged only one fee of $1.95 if funds are deposited into each of your students accounts during the same transaction session. For assistance in setting up or using an account, contact the myLunchMoney.com support team at 1-800-479-3531. How long does it take to post funds to a prepaid account? Payments made using checks or cash will be credited to your students account by the next business day. Payments made using credit cards at myLunchMoney.com are generally credited to your students account within 24 hours. What cards are accepted for online prepayment? Visa, Master Card, and Discover credit cards are accepted as forms of payment. How safe is my credit card information? Information is stored with the myLunchMoney.com website. To ensure the protection of all information stored on the website, all online transactions for MyLunchMoney are handled with industry standard SSL encryption certified by Verisign. Additional detailed information can be found on the MyLunchMoney.com home page. What happens when a prepaid account reaches a zero balance? The food service cashier will alert a student when the balance is at or below $5.00. No credit will be extended. Students with a zero balance must pay cash for their meals until their account is reestablished. Students may ask for the status of their account balance from a cashier any time a transaction is made in the cafeteria. If you are using the online system, you will be notified by e-mail when your students account is low. Can students charge meals with their student I.D.? No. This is not a credit system designed to develop a bill or be paid at a later date. Can students receive refunds? Regardless of the method of payment, refunds of unused funds will be made by district check to parents only upon written request. Cash refunds will not be made to students. Unused funds will carry over to the next school year for returning students. Parents can also request in writing to have unused balances transferred to another District 214 sibling. How much does school meal service cost? An average student can expect to spend $3.00 to $4.00 per day for lunch. Lunch is $2.75 and Breakfast is $1.50. Reduced price breakfast is $.30 and reduced lunch is $.40. There is no cost for breakfast and lunch to those students who are approved for free meals.
