The history of the River Valley Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber was founded in 1912 with one goal in mind: to secure new industries, to enhance and develop industries al-ready here, and to promote and develop the resources of the town and surrounding vicinities. By 1920, 125 businessmen were active members of the Chamber of Commerce.

In 1995 the name of the Chamber changed from the Rumford Chamber of Commerce to the River Valley Chamber of Commerce to represent 10 towns: Andover, Byron, Canton, Carthage, Dix-field, Hanover, Mexico, Peru, Roxbury, and Rumford. We are nes-tled in the mountains of Western Maine where we pride ourselves in being a four-season destination.

With our 10-town community area, you will find many inter-esting shops, places of interest as well as historic sites, beauti-ful lakes and mountains and small town country charm and hospitality. The River Valley area is a great place to live, work and play. Whether you are planning on passing through or sit-ting a spell, we hope that you will make us your future vacation destination! We are building a better tomorrow by investing in our communities today.

The River Valley Chamber of Commerce invites you to explore the River Valley, a true four-season destination. Within our

10-town community, we have everything you are looking for. From hiking, biking and camping in the lush green forests to skiing, snowmobiling or ATVing on our endless scenic trails.

Surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and clear blue riv-ers and lakes, these 10 towns have something very special to of-fer. The River Valley is truly a four season destination.

What is the purpose of a Chamber?Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. An associa-tion, of businessmen and businesswomen, designed to pro-mote and protect the interests of its members. There is a na-tional Chamber of Commerce, as well as numerous state and local chambers.

Among the benefits members receive are deals and discounts from other Chamber members, listing in a member directory and a variety of other programs and services designed to pro-mote business activity in a region. Chambers of Commerce play an important role in local municipalities in promoting business activity and representing Chamber members.

What is the purpose of a Chamber of Commerce?

Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community.

A chamber is an association, of businessmen and businesswomen, designed to promote and protect the interests of its members. There is a national Chamber of Commerce, as well as numerous state and local chambers.

Among the benefits members receive are deals and discounts from other Chamber members, listing in a member directory and a variety of other programs and services designed to promote business activity in a region.

Chambers of Commerce play an important role in local municipalities in promoting business

activity and representing Chamber members. At least at the local level, Chamber of Commerce members often meet to discuss and attempt to shape policy that relates to the business and overall economic environment.

Members also receive the distinction of being a preferred local vendor, as well as listing on various municipal websites and literature.

A chamber is composed of any number of various voluntar y organizations of business f irms, public officials, professional people, and public-spirited citizens. Chambers’ primary interest is in publicizing, promoting, and developing commercial and industrial opportunities in their local area, and usually also community schools, streets, housing, and public works.

One of the Chamber benefits is a social-networking tool called Business After Hours.

Businesses and organizations who are Chamber members schedule a two-hour social gathering at their place of business and invite the Chamber membership to attend. Light appetizers are often served.

At this social-networking gathering, the business/organization hosting the event gets to showcase their products in a relaxing atmosphere while networking with other businesses which in turn keeps business local and offers more for the residents in our communities.

You will be pleasantly surprised how many people do not realize all that a business

has to offer without seeing it firsthand. The Chamber supplies the invitations and the mailing labels of the Chamber members for the hosting business/organization to use for this gathering. The Chamber also publicizes the upcoming Business After Hours in its Weekly Events Bulletin that goes out to all Chamber members and on its website. We are here to assist you through this process; our goal along with yours is for a successful outcome.

Interested or looking for more information? Call the Chamber office today! As always, it is our goal to serve the needs of the businesses here in the River Valley.
