Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are writing this letter to advise you of a recent policy change regarding vaping in River East Transcona School Division. Vaping, and vaporizer devices such as electronic cigarettes are no longer allowed on school or school division property or at a school related activity or function.

“Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling a vapour produced by a vaping product, such as an electronic cigarette. This vapour is often flavoured and can contain nicotine.” (Government of Canada)

Vaporizer devices, such as electronic cigarettes, can also be used to vape cannabis, nicotine, THC liquids, and other drugs in a way that is difficult for observers to detect (there is little odour or obvious sign of these prohibited substances).

The Government of Canada regulates vaping products sold in Canada via the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act. It’s important for parents and caregivers to know, it is illegal to sell or give vaping products to anyone under the age of 18.

With the health, safety, and social and emotional well-being of all students in mind, the RETSD board of trustees has approved and amended policy JICG-R Electronic Vaporizer Devices and Tobacco to prohibit vaporizer devices and related products on school or school division property or at any school sanctioned activity or function.

Any student in violation of this policy is subject to discipline that may include suspensions.
