PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome Back to another exciting school year! It was wonderful seeing our returning students and families at our Open House and we are happy to welcome our new families to our learning community! Our school addition has been completed and the huts have been taken away leaving us new learning spaces with ample field outside to run and play! Dr. Hamilton is a beautiful learning environment, not only in the physical sense, but because of the amazing staff, students and families in the community! I am truly honoured to continue working with all of you this upcoming year! As per usual, watch for regular e-memos highlighting upcoming events, and please check the school website and calendar as it is regularly updated with school information. Some items to keep in mind: Our Sobeys/Safeway Gift Card school fundraiser will be running from Oct. 1 – Oct. 18, 2018. Information has been sent home and can be found on the school website. Thank you in advance for supporting the students in our school! Parents are invited to attend an evening of Math Conversation with Dr. Martha Koch at Robert Andrews School on October 17, 2018. Information was sent home by email. The flyer can be found on our website. During the lunch hour, we are using trained Grade 5 leadership students to serve as office assistants to help us with phone messages supervised by myself and teachers in charge. We are so fortunate to have a committed staff that are always looking for ways to engage our students in extracurricular activities. Currently, we have WSO/RETSD practice, concert practice, Flag Football, Gymnastics Club, Be the Change Club, recess intramurals and with many more clubs on the way! Dragonfly Draws are being held regularly to reward students for their positive behaviour choices! This month we will continue working on “keeping hands and feet to selves”. Well done students! DR. HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a time for fun and treats! To reduce the risk of students with life threatening allergies, products with peanuts, nuts and peanut butter should not be brought into the building.

Also, please remember not to send any “costume weapons” or violent costumes to school for our Halloween celebrations. This would include any masks/head gear that covers a student’s face to prevent them from being easily identified by staff. Thank you for supporting these guidelines to keep our students safe and ensure they have an enjoyable time.

Information on any class or school wide Halloween celebrations will be sent home by the classroom teacher or through an e-memo in the upcoming weeks!

SAVE THE DATE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2018 PAC HALLOWEEN FUN NIGHT 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. More details to follow!

DR. HAMILTON LUNCH PROGRAMDHLP

The Dr. Hamilton Lunch Program (DHLP) is off to a great start! As many of you know, DHLP is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing our students with a safe, responsible, respectful environment for parents/guardians who choose to have their children supervised over the lunch break.

For your child’s lunch to be a success, we have a Lunch Time Matrix that every child is expected to follow. I’m sure if you ask your child about the Lunch Matrix they will share all the expectations, as the Matrix is posted in every classroom and referred to on a regular basis by staff and lunchtime supervisors.

The DHLP has four supervisors and a coordinator who are present thru out the lunch hour while your child is eating lunch and playing outdoors. We, as a program, try to have consistency with placement of where supervisors are in the classrooms. This promotes positive relationship building between the children and their classroom supervisor, especially for the younger ages in the building.

If you have any questions regarding the Lunch Program at Dr. Hamilton, please feel free to contact me at the school.

Sincerely,

Kim Regula DHLP Coordinator

MILK TICKETS

Students can purchase milk tickets in the office. A sheet of 20 tickets costs $20.00. Individual tickets are not

available. Students can purchase either white or chocolate milk, juice box or water with their ticket.

EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLITY (ESD)

Help Us Help the World!

The Dr. Hamilton Green Team will be collecting old markers, pens, highlighters, sharpies, or mechanical pencils. We will collect them at school and work with Staples and Terracycle to continue keeping writing instruments out of landfills. Once collected, the items are cleaned, shredded and remade into new recycled products. Currently, this program has diverted over 1.4 million writing instruments from the landfills. If all writing instruments were recycled through this program it would be 18 times taller than Mount Everest! Please help us in our efforts to

keep the world clean! You can learn more about the recycling process and the Staples recycling program at https://bit.ly/2jLzCJh .

Items can be dropped off at Ms. Anderlic’s class in Room 9.

Bag Up Dr. Hamilton!

We are once again participating in the “Bag Up” challenge starting on Monday, October 22 until Wednesday, October 31! We will be collecting grocery bags, retail bags, newspaper sleeves, produce bags, bread bags, ice bags, bubble wrap, and re-sealable food bags! When collecting bags for this challenge, please ensure they are clean, dry, free from any debris and counted. Please label the number of bags handed in. Just for participating,

our school will receive frisbees made from recycled plastic, and we will be entered in a draw to win a bench all at the same time as saving our landfills from plastic debris!
