Hi Families! Can you believe that 2 months of school are already done! Time flies when you are having fun. The Halloween Howl was once again a huge success. Thank you for getting dressed up, getting your pumpkin carving skills super charged for the display, hitting the dance floor with your moves, and for your participation in getting into the Halloween spirit for the evening. Thank you to our special events coordinator Kelly for organizing such a wonderful evening and to all of the volunteers who helped to make it one for the books! Please don't forget to send all your photos of the evening to the yearbook at [email protected] Our Farm to School fundraiser went very well this year and we raised $4,195.00 for our school! A van packed full of donations went to the North Point Douglas Women's Centre and they were thrilled. With all that was received, they were able to hand out to ladies and families in need. Thank you for your generosity. PAC is always looking for volunteers, so if you are able to spare some time when we do school events, fundraising or hot lunches, please contact Chelsea at [email protected] with your contact info and events you are inter-ested in helping in and she will get you hooked up on SignUpGenius. Our next hot lunch dates are: Pizza, November 15 (Even); November 28 (Odd); and Hotdogs December 13 (Even). The next PAC meeting will be on November 6, 2019 at 6:30 pm in the library. Childcare is provided and all are welcome and encouraged to come and have your voice heard and stay in the know. We hope you can make it. If you have any questions, we always do our best to help you find the answers. Please contact us via email: [email protected] OR stay connected on our Facebook page facebook.com/EcoleCentralePAC

Tech Club

Congratulations to the students who have been accepted into the Technology Mentoring Program! Students will be teaching and helping others use technology with one of the following technology tools: Ozobots, Spheros, Dash & Dot Robots, VR goggles and the Merge Cube, MakeyMakey, Micro:bit and LittleBits. M Ammann’s class: Eden, Maria, Bentley, Nyah, Tavian, Alex, Evan, Vrittika, Chloe, Keshi M Landry’s class: Hayley, Emily, Ysabella, Janna Mme Stein’s class: Katrina, Lexinne, Addison, Yvonne, Oliver, Jacob, Mme McEachern & Mme Gosslin’s class: Ellie, Jack, Caleb Last year, Mme Schultz and I chose the Technology Mentors for this upcoming year. We gave each student the chance to apply for one or more technologies that they were interested in learning and teaching to others. In September, we were hard at work organizing the tasks that the Tech Mentors would learn, and later teach to other students in the school. In October, the Tech Mentors were announced and given their assignments. Only some have been trained in their specialty. The others will be trained later. We were able to provide training to the Tech Mentors assigned to the Merge Cube and VR goggles, Spheros & Makey-Makey. They had 2 lunch hours of training in early October. We invited a few students from each Grade 3 class to work with the Spheros, a few students from each Grade 2 class to work with the Makey-Makey, and a couple students from Mme Stein’s and M Landry’s class to try out the Merge Cube in VR. We will be having an upcoming session for the teachers called “Teach the Teachers” later in November. All teachers will be invited to drop in and learn some new technology from the students! That should be really fun! A big THANK YOU goes to Mme Schultz who has been a huge help in organizing this tech mentoring club!

Helping in Grade 1 & 2 computer classes In September and October, I have been working with some Grade 1 classes to help them log on to the computer using their username and password. I also assisted them in adding educational links to their favorites. Thanks to Mme Schultz who also came to help out!

Note that calendars are always subject to change, please consult the website regularly for updates

Science with Mme Gosselin's Grade 4's

I have also been working with the Grade 4's in Mme Gosselin's class on the Science theme of Rocks and Minerals. Stu-dents watched some videos on how the different rocks are made. Then, the students did some rock mining where they needed to dig out the minerals (chocolate chips) from the cookie mine. They had lots of fun, especially the part where they could eat the minerals! After that, we listened to a few music videos on rocks and minerals, and started creating a list of words about rocks and minerals. Next, we created some music together in Scratch that will be our music for our Rap on rocks and minerals. The students are currently writing their lyrics. Next month, we will be rapping in front of the green screen to our music. Can't wait to see the finished product. Stay tuned to see how it turns out!

Digital Citizenship By the end of November, all Grade 3 and 4 students will have had a session on what Digital Citizenship means. Students in Grade 3 will watch some videos, have discussions, and reflect on their own Digital Footprint. Students in Grade 4 will recall and discuss what they learned about Digital Citizenship last year. Afterwards, they will learn how to make a Meme about Digital Citizenship that we will print and post in the school.

ANAPHYLAXIS Allergies An allergy is the immune system’s excessive reaction to a normally harmless substance called an allergen. In suscepti-ble individuals, exposure to an allergen results in the body creating IgE antibodies specific to that allergen. When the body is exposed to the allergen again, the IgE antibodies cause chemicals (e.g. histamine) to be released which results in signs such as hives, itching and swelling. Allergic reactions can vary from mild to life-threatening. Anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can result in death due to airway obstruction or a severe drop in blood pressure. It is an extreme total body reaction. Allergens A person can be allergic to any food. However, the following foods commonly cause anaphylaxis: Peanuts and tree-nuts, fish and shellfish, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, sesame Other allergens that can cause anaphylaxis include insect stings, medications and latex. Risk Reduction Avoidance of allergens is the only way to prevent an anaphylactic reaction. The greatest risk of exposure to food aller-gens is in new situations or when normal daily routines are interrupted such as field trips, birthday parties and other special events. Young children are at greatest risk of accidental exposure, while deaths may occur among teenagers due to their increased independence, peer pressure and reluctance to carry an adrenaline auto-injector.

Although it can be difficult to achieve complete avoidance of an allergen, reducing the child's exposure to the allergen is possible. Schools and licensed child care facilities in Manitoba are required to have an anaphylaxis policy which in-cludes risk reduction strategies. The most successful strategies enlist the support of the entire community (e.g. par-ents, children, community program). Signs of Anaphylaxis After exposure to the allergen, any combination of the following signs may occur to signal the onset of anaphylaxis. Signs do not always occur in the same sequence, even in the same individual. When remembering the signs of anaphylaxis, think F.A.S.T. (face, airway, stomach, total body). Watch for signs that occur suddenly and are obvious changes in appearance or behavior. Face: red watering eyes, runny nose, itchiness, redness and swelling of the face, lips and tongue, hives

Airway: throat tightness, change of voice, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing

Stomach: severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, severe cramps

Total body: swelling, hives, itchiness, feeling of “sense of doom”, change in behaviour, pale or bluish skin, dizziness, fainting, loss of consciousness An anaphylactic reaction most commonly begins within seconds or minutes of exposure to the allergen. The majority of reactions occur within thirty minutes. The time from the first signs to death can be as little as a few minutes, if epi-nephrine is not given. It is possible, but rare, for signs of anaphylaxis to occur up to four hours after exposure to the allergen. Even when signs have subsided after epinephrine is given, they can return as much as eight hours after expo-sure.

Page 11: November - River East Transcona School Division · 2019-11-04 · We ask that you return them no later than Wednesday, November 20. onfirmation notes will go home no later than Monday,

ANAPHYLAXIS (continued) Treatment of Anaphylaxis Epinephrine is the drug used to treat anaphylaxis. It is a chemical that the body naturally produces and is responsible for the “adrenaline-rush” under stress. It is effective in treating anaphylaxis by constricting muscles around blood ves-sels to elevate blood pressure, relaxing airway muscles, reducing swelling, reducing the release of chemicals that cause anaphylaxis and stimulating the heart. Epinephrine is clear and colorless. Epinephrine should be given immediately when signs of anaphylaxis are first seen. There is clear evidence that a delay in giving epinephrine increases the odds of the person dying from anaphylaxis. There is no significant cause for concern if epinephrine is given to a child for whom it is prescribed and an anaphylactic reaction is not actually taking place. The life saving benefit of epinephrine in cases of suspected anaphylaxis outweighs any small risk of side effects. Children are at higher risk for severe allergic reactions if they also have asthma. For children that are diagnosed with both anaphylaxis and asthma and there is uncertainty whether the person is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction or an asthma episode, epinephrine should always be used first. Antihistamines are not recommended in the immediate treatment of anaphylaxis. Adrenaline Auto-injector Adrenaline auto-injectors (e.g. EpiPen®, Allerject™) contain a spring-loaded, self injectable syringe with a concealed needle. They are stamped with an expiry date and should be replaced by the parent/guardian when expired. It is rec-ommended that the child carry the adrenaline auto-injector at all times. If the child is not able to carry the adrenaline auto-injector, it should be worn by the adult responsible for the child or kept in an unlocked, safe and accessible loca-tion. It is the responsibility of community program personnel to be aware of the location of a child(ren)'s adrenaline auto-injector. DO NOT

refrigerate or leave outdoors in the winter. use if epinephrine is discolored (i.e. brown). use it on a child that is NOT diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy. use another child’s adrenaline auto-injector if the child’s own adrenaline auto-injector is not available.

How to Use Adrenaline Auto-injector Secure the child`s leg. The child should be lying down. If the child is vomiting, place him/her on their side. If the child is having difficulty breathing, he/she should sit upright.

Identify the injection area on the outer middle thigh.

Grasp the adrenaline auto-injector in your fist and remove the safety cap(s) by pulling it straight off. Do not bend or twist it off.

Firmly press the tip into the thigh at a 90º angle until you hear a click.

Hold in placed for a slow count of 5.

Store the used adrenaline injector safely and discard it following your program’s policy for disposal of sharps or give to EMS personnel.
