The Cameron CAMCHEC Riser InspectionSystem is a revolutionary new approach for

non-intrusive inspection of marine drilling riser. The CAMCHEC system allows riser to be inspectedon board the drilling vessel without removingbuoyancy and auxiliary lines. In addition, it provideshigher quality inspection data than conventionalinspection methods.

CAMCHEC Available ServicesThe CAMCHEC Riser Inspection System incorporates a numberof time-saving services. These services are availableindividually or as a complete package and include:

• Main body and auxiliary line cleaning.• Complete internal video inspection.• Visual, dye penetrant, mag particle and dimensional

examinations.• Advanced Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) weld

inspections.• Color/topographical wall thickness and corrosion survey.• Advanced ultrasonic inspections with digitally recorded

results in color and grayscale formats.• Application of corrosion inhibitors to riser inside diameter.

CAMCHEC Benefits• On-site inspection without removal of buoyancy and/or

auxiliary lines reduces downtime, and the possibility ofdamage due to handling and shipping.

• Complete inspection can be achieved without removing risercoatings, saving valuable time.

• CAMCHEC provides more detailed inspection results for wallthickness surveys and TOFD weld inspections.

• Digitally recorded inspection results and video images areavailable for future comparisons.

• Archived inspection results are easily retrieved.• More accurate inspection means early identification of future

repair requirements.

CAMCHEC Riser Risk Management ProgramThe CAMCHEC Riser Inspection System allows Cameron tooffer customers a comprehensive Riser Risk ManagementProgram to reduce costs and ensure the life of their drilling risersystems.

Utilizing CAMCHEC data as a baseline, and comparing it to thedata from subsequent inspections, accurate trending can beestablished with the following advantages to the customer:

• Retirement dates for riser joints can be predicted, allowingplanned repair and/or replacement at the convenience of theoperator rather than unplanned shutdowns due to failure.

• The data can ensure that riser joints are optimally deployed, placing joints in the best condition in higher stress locations.

• Since the digital data is referenced by riser serial number, themovement of a riser joint from rig to rig can be tracked andincorporated into the data bank for each new riser string.

The CAMCHEC system utilizes a series of precisiontools to perform the most comprehensive riserinspection in the industry. Each step is performedalong the entire length of the main riser tube and allauxiliary lines. All data is transferred from theinspection to a computer terminal, allowingpermanent digital storage for future comparison.

Typical CAMCHEC OperationsThe following are services available with the CAMCHECsystem. Each operation may be performed on the drilling rigand can be used to inspect riser joints up to 100 feet in length. The riser can be inspected with all buoyancy and auxiliary linesstill in place. In addition, the inspection can be performedwithout removal of coatings from the riser tube. This eliminatesthe need to remove the riser joints from the rig, saving time andeliminating the possibility of damage during transport andhandling.

Once complete, the customer has a set of computer readouts onall processes as well as graphical images of all inspections and athorough documentation of the inspection. The CAMCHECSystem offers a variety of software display options including agrayscale data set, color amplitude scale and depth-to-colorformat.

After all inspections are completed, the customer hascomprehensive data on repairs required and can make informeddecisions on maintenance scheduling.

Riser CleaningA stainless steel, spiral-wound brush mechanismand the CAMCHEC Honing Tool are pulledthrough the riser joint. The tool and brush arerotated by a high speed motor. A high pressurewater spray is used to remove dirt, scale, loosecoating, dried well fluid, etc. along the entirelength of the riser joint.

Video InspectionThe CAMCHEC Video Inspection Camera is deployedthrough the main riser tube first to perform a completeinternal video/visual examination. Imperfections towithin one millimeter are projected to a computermonitor and the entire inspection is recorded to videotape. A smaller inspection camera is run through theauxiliary lines. The video inspection may be followed bya dimensional and ovality survey.

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)Using the specially manufactured CAMCHEC TOFDtooling, a complete TOFD examination of all weldsdetermines the presence of all corrosion, crackingand other detrimental defects. The systems areoperated remotely and may incorporate a videocamera. The TOFD data is collected in real time andis displayed in a simple gray scale format for ease ofinterpretation.

Corrosion MappingThe CAMCHEC Corrosion Mapping Tools are usedto evaluate the depth of corrosion and measurethe wall thickness of the tube body. Thecorrosion survey is performed over the entirelength of both main and auxiliary lines. The datais digitally recorded in real time, presented incolor to depth formats, and permanently storedfor future analysis and trending.
