Helping Youth Stay Organized! Organization is a huge challenge for many people. If we as adults struggle with organization, it makes it even more challenging to help our kids or other youth develop strong organizational skills. Most youth tend to be better organized when in a structured environment, such as school, particularly in-person classes with a predictable routine. When attending classes in virtual and hybrid settings, students lose the routine and structure they experience in traditional school settings. There are a number of things we can do to help youth learn and develop organizational skills. Your student being an active participant in the process is a very important. Here are a few key focus areas: Develop and Keep Routines Have your student develop a daily schedule starting with the time they get up in the morning to when they go to bed at night. Assist in making sure the schedule your child developed is realistic and achievable and hold them accountable for keeping their schedule. Create a Learning Space Allow your student to decide where they want their “classroom” to be, if possible, not their bedroom. This area should have as few distractions as possible. It should be stocked with everything needed for class, studying, homework and projects. Have enough space for all materials and supplies to have a place, and putting everything away each day reduces time and effort wasted looking for what they need. You can find lots of ideas for building screens to reduce distractions, some as simple as a PVC frame and a bed sheet. Planners Planners help organize assignments, activities and large projects. A planner combines a calendar with an assignment notebook allowing students to view weekly, monthly and semester assignment deadlines. This is especially helpful when breaking large, long-term projects into manageable pieces. Planners can be as simple as a big dry erase wall calendar to a digital planner. Digital options including Google Keep, Remember the Milk, Evernote and calendars. Allow your student to decide what type of planner they want to use and verify periodically they are using it. Additional tips to assist your student include: Write Things Down. Students should not rely on memory alone. Have them keep detailed to-do lists for assignments, homework and projects. Ask for Help. Distance can make asking questions to instructors inconvenient or uncomfortable for students. NOT asking for help when needed results in wasted time and energy, and poor grades. Don’t Procrastinate. Procrastination creates piles of assignments and long to-do lists. Remind your child, doing what needs to be done now, allows time to do what they want later. Prioritize. Have your student organize assignments by due date, time required to complete and level of difficulty. They can use color-coded folders to organize assignments according to priority level. Keep in mind, one of the biggest challenges youth experience in virtual learning is the lack of social engagement. Allow your student time to socialize with their friends distantly or safely in person. This will go a long way in keeping their emotional and educational outlook positive.

You Want Me To Do What? Helpful Hints, Tools, And Tips For The Volunteer Horse Show Manager - Jason Turner, Extension Horse Specialist‘You want me to do what?’ might be the response you get when asking a novice or seasoned horse club leader to step up and provide leadership to manage a youth horse show. This response might stem from a lack of experi-ence and/or confidence, or it might be the reply of a horse show veteran with a few bad experiences. In either case the job still has to be done, and in most cases it is done by volunteers. The presenters will utilize a mixture of lec-ture, “what if” scenarios, and discussion activities to teach participants key points for hosting a successful show. In addition to discussing how to set a detailed time-line for “To Do” lists on the road to horse show day, participants will gain insight on where to find volunteers, what motivates them, and then how to match volunteers to show management jobs best suited to their individual nature.
