THE BOTTLE (A garrafa)
Patricia Auerbach
Brinque-Book, 2018
Picture Book (2 to 6 years-old), 36 pages
At first glance it looked like an empty bottle and
nothing more. It took only a closer look to see how
many games were there! In this picture book, the
plastic bottle left in the kitchen sink becomes an
object of observation through the eyes of a very
curious child - as every child is. Car, rocket,
megaphone, elephant trunk and rabbit ears are some
of the possibilities that multiply when, in the
recyclable trash can, several other bottles are found.
Can things give birth to other things? If you look
closely, with that childlike curiosity, the answer is yes!
Patricia Auerbach was born in São Paulo, in 1978. She studied Architecture, has worked as an art director and taught History of Art. Today, she teaches Art for kids at school, writes and illustrates books.

THE 10 NOT-QUITE-ADVANTAGES OF DYING AFTER YOU (As dezvantagens de
morrer depois de você)
Fernanda de Castro e Lima
Verus, May 2019
Young Adult Novel
Months after her best friend’s death, Gabriela finally gathers the
courage to take up a challenge Julia set up for her. She would
finally read the ten secret wishes her friend left for her in colorful
envelopes.
On an idle afternoon, not long before the accident that took Julia’s
life, the friends playfully decided that each should draw a list of
ten wishes the other would have to fulfill in case one of them died.
Each wish was placed into a numbered envelope. Reluctantly,
Gabi now had to deal with the consequences of her friend’s
choices. Each envelope was a new challenge. And with each new
challenge, a transformation. Fulfilling the wishes made Gabi feel
somehow connected to Julia, but it also deepened her anguish over her childhood friend’s
absence.
At the beginning of the book, seventeen-year-old Gabriela is parachuting. It was the first of
Julia’s wishes. A new envelope could only be opened once the previous wish had been
fulfilled.
The story explores the main character’s internal conflicts, having to deal with mourning
while experiencing situations that force her out of her comfort zone and fill her with joy.
Her feelings are a mix of sadness, anger, happiness and guilt. After parachuting, Gabriela
will have to take dance classes, to hug strangers on the street, go to another country for a
tattoo and sing in front of a large crowd, among other dares carefully (and purposely)
imagined by Julia.
Fernanda de Castro Lima was born in Santo André, in the greater São Paulo. Originally a
radio broadcaster, she also worked as producer and copy editor for many TV networks,
including TV Cultura, Band, MTV Brasil, SBT and Globonews, and as an image researcher for
Abril Publishing House. She is currently a TV screenwriter and a writer. Selected by the
"FNAC New Talents of Literature" writing contest, her first short story was published in
2014. As dezvantagens de morrer depois de você is her first teen novel.

THE DAY AFTER THE BREAK-UP (O dia depois do fora)
Laura Conrado
Bertrand, August 2019
Young Adult Novel
“Break-ups are democratic. They happen regardless of
faith, gender, or race. It does not matter how educated you
are, whether you commute walking or just bought ‘the car
of the year.’ It reaches you and shakes your foundations.
Getting ditched makes you world’s most typical woman, or
maybe the worst one. I’m just like any other woman in the
suburbs. And like all the ones living in fancy urban condos
alike. We have all been given the brush-off—we have all
survived it.”
What if you were doomed to live the day after the break-
up over and over again?
Melissa, a twenty-three-year-old undergraduate dentistry student mysteriously relives the
chaotic Sunday after Fred brakes up with her. With a quite special help, different from
anything she had ever seen, Melissa faces the time loop spell to get rid of it, once she learns
the lessons from each repetition.

wrote the acclaimed novels Freud, Help Me Out Here!, I Always Fall for the Wrong Guy,
Shakespeare and Them, When Saturn Is Back, and Hooked in Myself Laura Conrado is

Picture Book (5-8 years-old), 40 pages
Right at this moment, somewhere out there, a child is thinking
about what goes on inside people’s bodies, inside their houses,

a glimpse of these thoughts? This book is just that: a peek into
some of these young wanderings. A true celebration of all
children, of their genius, their multiple voices, desires, dreams
and aspirations, and of how inspiring they can be.

THE COURAGE OF SIMPLE THINGS (A coragem das coisas simples)
Stella Maris Rezende
Illustrated by Laurent Cardon
Editora Globo, 2015
Middle grade (8 -12 years-old)
Winner of the Jabuti award for best children’s author of 2014,
Stella Maris Rezende tells the story of a seamstress’ son who,
while helping his mother, listens to people talk about their lives.
Known to costumers as Sweety, he sews their buttons, brings
them water and coffee, and pays attention to each person’s way of
speaking and of repeating favorite expressions: there’s Mrs.
Imagine that!, Mr. Be at ease, Miss Live and learn.
Sweety loves to catch on to the simple or common words that
people make a habit of repeating, whether in his mom’s sewing
room or in his classroom. Little by little the boy becomes a collector of words brought into
his life by other people – common expressions that are nevertheless rich with mysteries and
surprises. In this book, Stella Maris Rezende explores the strength and magic of simple
things, capable of enchanting us by their sheer humanity and courage.
“Stella Maris Rezende is an important writer, one of our best in the unquestionably tough
category of children’s books. She masters with ease and skill both theme and style: what she
says and how she says it. She can blend emotion, humor and insights in equal measure -
alongside gentleness, simplicity and depth"
Tatiana Belinky, writer and literary critic.
Stella Maris Rezende is from the town of Dores do Indaiá in the Brazilian state of Minas
Gerais. She has a Master’s in Brazilian Literature from the University of Brasília, and is a
designer, singer, writer and actress. She has published dozens of books for both adult and
young readers. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she played the Bluestar Fairy in the
television series Carrossel on the TV Manchete/Brasília channel, and Aunt Stella on the
programme Recreio on TV Record/Brasília. She spent part of her childhood in the city of
Belo Horizonte, moved to Brasília in 1962, and since 2007 has lived in Rio de Janeiro.

RIGHTS OF THE LITTLE READER (Direitos do pequeno leitor)
Patricia Auerbach
Illustrated by Odilon Moraes
Companhia das Letrinhas, 2017
Picture Book (5 to 12 years-old), 48 pages
When it comes to books and reading, adults have
guaranteed rights – they can read whatever they want,
when they want. But what about young readers? The ones
who are just beginning to explore books: what are their
rights? They can be the main character of a story, play with
their favourite heroes, re-read a short story as many times
as they want, or even give up reading a book half way
through. This book was created to guarantee that all
children are aware of all these rights and others, and so it
will be easier to ensure they are respected.
A manifesto in defence of allowing children to read without restrictions or obligations: from
giving up reading a book half way through to taking inspiration from a character in a story
to create their own adventures. Everything is permitted when it comes to developing our
young readers.

MALALA, THE GIRL WHO WANTED TO GO TO SCHOOL (Malala, a menina que queria ir para escolar)
Adriana Carranca Illustrated by Bruna Assis Companhia das Letrinhas, 2015 Middle grade (8 to 12 years-old) 96 pages
This bestseller by Adriana Carranca sold more than 170,000
copies in Brazil
Malala Yousafzai became famous worldwide for her fight for the right
to an education. Raised in a peaceful region of Pakistan, she saw her
world change with the rise of the Taliban. Listening to music was now a
crime; women were not allowed to go to the market; and girls were
banned from school.
Malala had been taught to stand up for what she believed in and she
fought long and hard to continue studying, until, on October 9, 2012, it
almost cost her life. Malala was shot in the head as she rode the bus to school, and few believed
she would pull through.
Today, Malala is a living example of the power of peaceful protest and is the youngest-ever
winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. In this journalistic work for children, Adriana Carranca tells her
story, and those of the two other girls shot in 2012, drawing a historical/political/cultural
panorama of Swat, which she visited soon after the attacks.
"As well as telling a true story, a kind of topsy-turvy fairy tale in which the main character does
not want to get married but rather to study, the journalist Adriana Carranca, a special reporter
with the Estado de São Paulo newspaper, creates for children and teenagers a genre that up until
now has only been written for adults: the non-fiction novel".
Adriana Carranca is a special reporter for the Brazilian
newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. She has extensively covered the
war in Afghanistan and important events in Pakistan, Iran,
Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Haiti, Mexico, USA, Great Britain,
Uganda, Congo, South Sudan.

A TRUE-BLUE IDEA (Uma ideia toda azul)
Marina Colasanti
Global, 1998
Fairytales (8+ years-old), 64 pages
A True-Blue Idea sold more than 200,000 copies
True-Blue Idea was born a classic. Not because it deals with the
traditional themes of short stories, or because its characters are
kings, princesses, unicorns and fairies, but because it explores an
inner realm that is timeless.
In this book Marina Colasanti, one of Brazil’s leading writers for
children and young readers, breathes new life into a world that
seemed as if it had nothing novel to offer, transforming it with her
words, and creating something fresh from the familiar.
A True-Blue Idea is not only a book for children. Like the tales of Grimm or Andersen, in their
original versions, it also has deep meanings for older readers.
Marina Colasanti was born in the former Italian colony
of Eritrea in 1937. As a child, her family moved back to
Italy, from where they emigrated to Brazil after the end
of World War II. She is one of the most awarded female
Brazilian writers, author of about 40 books, including
works for children and young adults, short stories,
novels, and essays. Graduated in Fine Arts, she
illustrates most of her books. Marina is also a renowned
translator from English, French, and Italian.
Marina Colasanti won the Iberoamericano SM Prize for Children and YA Literature, 2017

A KING WITHOUT MAJESTY (Um rei sem majestade)
Adriana Lisboa
Illustrated by Lucia Brandão
Rocco Pequenos Leitores, 2018
Picture Book (5 to 8 years old), 32 pages
In her new children’s book, the award-winning writer Adriana
Lisboa introduces a poem that invites young readers to experience
a new vision of the world. Via an inventive poetic game, the author
creates metaphors to define a variety of everyday situations. The
verses become almost a mantra, or even a rap to be said out loud,
with claps on the beat.
To further enrich this book, the illustrator Lúcia Brandão has
designed images that create new metaphors based on those
suggested by the author. In a colour palette full of strong contrasts,
the artist leads the reader to become increasingly involved in the density of the poem.
A King without Majesty can be read in many different ways by young readers, parents and
teachers, which facilitates the mediation process, whether at home or in the classroom. The
poetic game imagined by Adriana Lisboa and Lúcia Brandão’s illustrations creates an
essential work for broadening children’s horizons.
Adriana Lisboa was born in Rio de Janeiro.
A novelist, poet and short story writer, she
is the author of the novels Sinfonia em
branco (Symphony in White, José Saramago
Prize), Azul corvo (Crow Blue, one of The
Independent newspaper’s books of the
year) and Hanói (Hanoi, one of the Brazilian
newspaper O Globo’s books of the year),
amongst other works. In the realm of
children’s literature, she made her debut
with Língua de trapos, which won the FNLIJ’s breakthrough author prize. Her books have
been translated in over twenty countries. Her poems and short stories have been published
in magazines such as Modern Poetry in Translation and Granta. She has lived in France and
New Zealand, and currently resides in the USA.
