richmond: the birthplaceof innovation

For more than a century, some of theworld's most significant energy innovationshave been developed in our community at the Richmond Technology Center (RTC),a unique research and development

campus located adjacent to the Refinery.

RTC is the birthplace of iconic innovations that havehelped push oil and fuel additive industries to new heightsin quality, durability and efficiency. RTC also developedthe fuel used in the first solo trans-Atlantic flight byCharles Lindbergh and the first diesel engine oil that couldbe run in any diesel engine.

Perhaps one of RTC’s greatest achievements was thedevelopment of Techron. Born in 1979 as the first patentedadditive developed for engines running unleadedgasoline, Techron has been reformulated over the years to increasingly reduce emissions, keep vital enginecomponents clean and preserve original engineperformance by preventing harmful deposits.

Our team of scientists in Richmond are continuallyfocused on delivering a competitive advantage to ourbusiness partners through technology. I am proud to beassociated with a team that is conducting leading-edgeresearch to help transform how the world uses energy.

Chevron Oronite is a global leader in the development, manufacturing andmarketing of quality additives thatimprove the performance of fuels andlubricants used in a variety of

equipment types.

We provide innovative products that are found in morethan half the tankers at sea and many cars on the road,which emphasizes our company’s commitment tomaking the things that go, go better.

I am part of a team based in Richmond that recently helped create the first lubricating oil additive packageto meet General Motor’s new engine oil standards.Passenger car engine oils must provide engineprotection under a wide variety of conditions, rangingfrom low-temperature, short-trip service to extendedhigh-speed, high-temperature operations.

Meeting the specification calls for additionalperformance and robustness from a motor oil to helpprovide improved fuel efficiencies, improvedturbocharger-protection and reduced pre-ignitionproblems.

As a Staff Statistician with the Products andTechnology Department of Oronite, I provide supportto all of our product lines. I am really proud to be partof the team and the data-driven approach we took to meet GM’s exacting specifications.

What is your job at Chevron?I am responsible for product quality of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) andmotor gasoline. I provide technical expertise to all six of Chevron’s NorthAmerican refineries, including Richmond. I help ensure the gasoline ourstations sell to consumers is top tier.

Does your work support California mandates for clean fuels?Many people don’t realize that California has some of the strictestenvironmental regulations in the world. In fact, we produce a special blendof cleaner gasoline that is only available in California. We are helping toevaluate gasoline to make sure the fuels produced at the Richmond Refineryand El Segundo Refinery meet those requirements.

What’s your favorite part of the job?I really enjoy getting an opportunity to interact with colleagues from all overNorth America. Right now I am working with teams in Canada, Mississippiand Hawaii. It’s gratifying to help colleagues solve technical problems thatenable our business to thrive.

Are people ever surprised to learn Chevron has research labs in Richmond?When I tell people that I work for Chevron in Richmond, they presume it’s at the refinery. They don’t realize that we have an R&D campus next to therefinery. It’s a very robust scientific environment.

Where do you live?I live in Point Richmond, right next to Washington Elementary School. I moved with my husband from the East Coast. The location is absolutelyfantastic. I really love the small town community feel. And it’s great to beable to walk to work.

What do you like to do outside of work?We are both very active. My husband runs marathons and I do triathlons. We love working out in Miller Knox Park, Brickyard Cove and Marina Bay. It’salso great to have access to the Plunge for swimming. These days though,you're more likely to find us walking with our 10 month old son in his stroller.

What’s a common misconception about Chevron you would like to clear up?People don’t necessarily realize how important Chevron is to the Bay Areaeconomy. We not only provide a lot of jobs, but we also produce a lot of fuelthat keeps our region going. The refinery makes 60% of the jet fuel used andabout 20% of the gasoline used in the Bay Area. Without us, people wouldn’tbe able to get around.

Anything else you want people to know about Chevron?Chevron employs a lot of very talented technical experts. These technicalexperts help us remain competitive. The company has a program thatrecognizes the most senior of our technical experts called the “ChevronFellows Program”. To help younger professionals like me, the company has amentoring program directed by the Chevron Fellows which helps foster aculture of innovation.
