From the TAS Faculty

TAS has started this term running with a large range of activities and events that are available to our students.

Our Hospitality students have been putting their skills on display as they prepared, served and cleaned up after a breakfast for the sponsors and committee members of the NSW Training Awards. Our students did an amazing job and demonstrated the skills that they have been working on. They are now preparing for their next function which will be an evening that they design for their parents.

Richmond River is participating in the Dubbo Merino Wether School Challenge again this year. Our sheep arrived from Dubbo at the end of last term and students have begun to prepare them to lead at the show. This annual competition is organised by the NSW Stud Merino Breeders’ Association, with support from AWI. The initiative aims to educate and engage students on the commercial production of Merino sheep by giving them a memorable ‘hands on’ experience covering a broad range of sheep and wool production skills. We would like to thank Ben Watts of Bralca for his continued support and organisation of this event. Ben is going to be conducting a workshop for our students latter this term.

Our senior Construction students have participated in and completed their White Card training. This will allow them to be able to complete their mandatory industry work placements over the next couple of terms.

Our Textiles students have been developing their sewing and fabric manipulation skills while completing their microwave bowl holders, pyjama pants and are now starting their hoodies project. The students are also learning how to knit and crochet squares for the Wrap With Love Blanket project. We are hoping to be able to make a knitted and crocheted blanket as a class project.

There have been several activities that our Agriculture students have been able to be involved with. We are looking forward to participating in shows again this year and our sheep from Dubbo and Angus heifers from True North will allow this to happen. The arrival of our baby dairy calves is always an exciting time at the farm.

Year 9 Agriculture has started a farm study related to the Dairy Industry. In the past we have participated in the Cows Create Careers unit which was designed to introduce secondary school students to the dairy industry and make students aware of career pathways within the industry. Dennis Rose has kindly lent us two beautiful calves for this project and students are enjoying learning how to feed and care for them.

Finally, we are looking forward to seeing the improvements that are going to be made to our school through the Sustainable School's Grant that Mr Judd has received for our school.

Sally Ford TAS Head Teacher

Students have been working hard to regenerate our permaculture demonstration gardens and our sugar cane crop is coming along nicely.

On Friday 7 May Richmond River students attended a Sustainable Agriculture excursion to The Farm at Ewingsdale with Kadina and Lismore High Campuses that had been arranged by Zane Van Den Berg. Students took part in a range of workshops and practical activities that were delivered by local industry experts. Students really enjoyed the bee workshop. We are looking forward to attending Primex.

Poetry Performance and Workshop This week Year 10 students at Richmond River High Campus were treated to a Poetry Performance and Workshop presented by the Poets Out Loud Youth Program. The event was held in the River Theatre and was hosted by Sarah Temporal, who is a Nimbin Poetry World Cup winner and former English teacher, and Katinka Smit who is also a performance poet who has had some success at the Nimbin Poetry World Cup. Their goal is to help people of all ages fall in love with poetry. Both hosts performed some of their own poetry for our students, before encouraging students to become involved in their event, The Youth Poetry Slam. The Youth Poetry Slam is planned for the first week of August and is open to young people aged 12-18. Entrants may perform solo or in teams of up to 4. Students from Richmond River are encouraged to take part. Hopefully we will have at least two students take up this challenge. Please see the English Department if you are interested. Combined High Schools U18 Rugby Union

CHS Boys Football

Darnell and Connor of RRHC and two other Rivers College students represented North Coast at the state CHS U18 Rugby Union Championships in Kiama, last week. The boys played four tough games in three days. Two narrow losses to Sydney East and Sydney South West saw them finish in 11th position. Well done Connor and Darnell.

John Eakin PDHPE Teacher

Ethan spent last week representing North Coast at the state CHS Boys Football Championships at Kirrawee. Three days of rain and wind made for difficult conditions but the boys played extremely well finishing 7th out of 12 teams and were the only team to score goals against eventual champions, Hunter, who defeated us 4-2.

Sir Peter Cosgrove What a privilege it was to hear Sir Peter Cosgrove speak today at SCU. Addressing Year 12 students from across The Rivers College Campuses, as well as Trinity and Woodlawn, Sir Peter shared life experiences and lessons learnt. His knowledge around leadership and utilising your strengths was an important message for our students. His stories of representing Australia on the world stage were both engaging and at times incredible. He has lived an extraordinary life.

We would like to acknowledge Lord's Taverners Northern NSW for providing our students with this opportunity. Thank you, Raphael for your Acknowledgement of Country, on behalf of The Rivers Secondary College.

Suggested safe areas are the grassy area outside the Ag Shed in Lake Street or near the shelter in McKenzie Park in Pitt Street, where there is a footpath to the school. Stymie

Richmond River High Campus uses Stymie to support student well being and to support direct action against bullying in our school. The program educates bystanders about their responsibilities and provides an online, independent reporting method, ensuring complete anonymity for students making notifications; creating a sense of safety in "the crowd". The use of Stymie will help change the "culture of acceptance" of bullying behaviours. Students can access Stymie by going to www.stymie.com.au and www.facebook.com/stymieau
