How to get an A* in History GCSE
Tips for Paper One
This will be one hour and 45 minutes long and cover three topics;
- The Causes of the First World War
- The Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations
- The Causes of the Second World War
Question Starter Advice
‘Describe…’
(usually 4 marks)
Pick out four relevant points.
Describe at least two of them in detail (two sentences of
description at least for each) using your own knowledge.
‘Do you agree……?’
Explain your
answer by
referring to the
purpose of the
source, as well as
using its content
and your
knowledge…’
(usually 6 marks)
Have you said whether you agree with the source or not?
Have you explained in detail what the source tells you?
Have you used your own knowledge AND the source to explain your
answer?
Have you evaluated the provenance of the source and explained why
the source is biased?
Have you explained why the purpose of the source is important?
What events have taken place which prompted this source to be
made?
‘Which…?’ or
‘Why…?’ (usually
10 marks)
Have you said which point you think is most important and explained
your answer?
Have you explained both bullet points in detail pointing out how each
one is important in some way?
Have you included your own knowledge where relevant?
Have you added a conclusion at the end of the answer to explain
your choice for most important and explained in lots of detail?
Maximum revision is essential. You
need to do at least 20 hours of
revision over the next few weeks.
Make sure you answer the
questions you have been
taught. Don’t try any of
the others.
If you finish
the exam
earlier go back
over the essay
questions and
see if you can
add anything
more to the
conclusions.
Complete as many
practice questions as
you can and get them
marked.
Try out all the revision techniques you
have been shown and find one that
works for you. Do not simply read your
notes over and over again.
