Come and SKATE These Memories by Rosita A. Graham

The "Come and SKATE These Memories" skating party held Saturday, March 17th was certainly memorable. After greeting old friends, acquaintances and guests, DJ Gerald Link made everyone roll, bounce, rock and skate to the sounds of the 60's and 70's. Just hearing those songs and physically skating in the gymnasium of the "SAINT" made several recollect their youthful days. Some even became emotional when seeing friends

from yesterday.

There were guests skaters from the Detroit Roller Wheels Skating Rink performing to the skating classic "Function at the Junction". While many thought, "We used to be able to

do that!"

The old snack bar was opened for business again. The smell of hot dogs, burgers and Sloppy Joes filled the air. While Faygo, Vernors and Better Made Potato Chips recap-

tured the familiar taste with throwback prices.

Skaters and guests were able to take part in a raffle. Three authentic St. Stephen fold-ing chairs were autographed and raffled off. The chairs were signed by Rosalind Ash-ford, original and current member of the Vandellas and our own Henry Fambrough, the only original living member of the Spinners. The winners were Thelma Gardner, Kimber-

ly Cole and Marilyn Hall.

At the conclusion of the party the Honorary Chairmen were introduced: Dr. Richard J. Whitman Jr. (who flew in from Arizona) and Vernon L. Harris Jr. Both were former floor guards assigned by the late Mr. John Newton, director of the skating program here at St. Stephen. The honorary chairs skated to "Rockin' Charlie" and dedicated it to the late Eugene Donald, who would bring it all to the floor whenever that song was played. The final skate of the evening was to the song "Together Again" in honor of all the youth who are no longer with us, who spent every weekend skating at the "SAINT". May they rest

and SKATE in peace.

The skating party’s chair was Rosita A. Graham and co-chair Delores Jarber. Thanks to

an awesome committee, volunteers and participants, the party was a huge success.

I can’t believe it has been six months. How time flies! For these first six months I have been focused on charting a direction for St Stephen. A organization has to know where it is headed and the best course to get there. The seven task forces that came out of the strategic planning meetings is the path to get us to that glorious and anticipated future. The

task force are: Doing God’s work with Excellence; Young Adult and Youth Presence and Participation; More Word and Prayer; Christian Education; Outreach; Hospitality; and Communication. Our next huge event will be our spiritual gift inventory day. It is not an assumption that every member has a gift, but a biblical truth. I believe if every member knew their gift , and operated in it , you would have a church that glorifies God, reshaping the culture of the church and transforming its community. So everyone come out on April 14th at 11am. The next six months not only will I focus on building the saints already in the church, but creating relationships with the community. July 1, I will begin my “ walking the neighborhoods or “taking it to the streets “initiative.” Several days of the week , I will walk the neighbor-hoods of the city of Detroit meeting the residents. Stay tuned for more information.

"Save the Date" On Sunday, June 17th at the 10:30 a.m. service, I will host 200 men in worship. This is a clarion call to bring African American men together around the common goal of improving the quality of life of all men in the Greater Detroit Area. The procession into the sanctuary will begin at 10:20 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend the worship service!

St. Stephen AME Church Centennial News

A Monthly Publication of the St. Stephen African Methodist Episcopal Church April 2018 Issue

March was a month filled with many memories and remembrances of St. Stephen's 100 years of service to the westside community and the city of Detroit. On March 11, the American Black Journal aired an interview with members Doreen Odom and Emita Shuler discussing the church’s impact, services and programs and upcoming weekend. highlights If you missed the interview visit: www.dptv.org/programs/american-black-journal; Morehouse Meets Motown / St. Stephen AME Church Centennial. The weekend of March 17-18 , created new and restored old memories for many members, family and friend of St. Stephen A.M.E. Church. On Saturday, March 17, many returned to the church to skate in Spivey Community Center (see Come and SKATE these memories on page 3). On Sunday, March 18, the church ‘ pews were filled with members who attended the church as teenagers and other wor-shippers to witness the presentation of the Centennial Bridge Builders Award to Presiding Elder Harold C. Huggins. St. Stephen’s historian Harriet Young eloquently delivered the Historical Remembrance Committee’s background, the purpose and significance of the Bridge Builders award. With the assistance of the Committee’s President Emita Shuler. Mrs. Young bestowed the award upon Presiding Elder Huggins who first came to St. Stephen in 1959 and later returned as the Senior Pastor from 1980-1997. Immediate-ly following the worship service, the reception and program in the Howell Hall included a large birthday card signed by members, a $900 check presentation and a 90th birthday cake filled with candles commemorating Presiding Elder Huggins 90th Birthday on March 3. Bridge Builder’s Chair Gwendolyn Person spearheaded the day. The congregation and community were touched by our

Bridge Builder and Saint, Presiding Elder Huggins for more than 59 years when he came to Detroit as the assistant youth pastor. Touched by the Saint by LaVeta Browne Concerts, skating scouts, dances, talent shows, birthday parties, exercise classes, basketball, town halls, receptions, health fairs, tutoring, Sum-mer Bible School, banquets, movie, teas, fashion shows, bazaars, fish frys, card parties, Head Start... For many years St. Stephen A.M.E./Spivey Community Center served as the mecca of the west side. People of all ages came from all over Detroit, Highland Park, Ecorse, River Rouge and Inkster to participate in the numerous activities offered. Perhaps! you were one of those peo-ple. Perhaps, your life was impacted by one or more of the activities. Perhaps, you are the person you are today because you were, "TOUCHED BY THE SAINT."
