COMMUNICATION Exchange of information, ideas thoughts,
through use of verbal and/or nonverbal behavior
Occurs when understanding is achieved by the receiver and sender is aware of understanding
Verbal: spoke or written (including pictures or graphics
Nonverbal- body language: gestures, facial expressions
COMMUNICATION CONT. Feedback- response from the receiver Barriers: noise, culture, foreign

CONFIDENTIALITY Information can only be shared: 1. written permission from the patient 2. Members of the health care team on
need to know basis 3. if required by law: births deaths,
communicable diseases, violence, abuse
4. If in doubt check policy/procedure manual
INTERVIEW/INSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES Closed-ended questions only used to
solicit specific information answered by yes/no
Open-ended questions encourage talking. Turning pt. statements into questions is a good way to do this
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS Correct a written error by drawing a
line through the mistake and writing your initials above it
