Skin SafetyA. Yamina CollinsOU thought you were doin g eve n r ~ h by ~ skin: nevergOing outside WIthout using a

unblock with SPF 45, always wearing aat at the beach and eating plen ty of fruitsnd vegetables. It turns out tha t might note enough."I've known people sitting in an office, 20 years who have skin cancer on their

ace because of the UVA [ultraviolet type] rays coming in through their officewinow," explains Dr. David A. Colbert , aeading dermatologist with the New Yorkermatology Group, who has consultedsuch films as TheDa Vinci Code an d thescar-winn ingA Beautifu l Mind"T hey'll have it on ju st one side of the

ace too, because of how they were facingt." .It 's important to have UVAfilte r son thendows, especially in a city like Ne w York,

he re officework is so common. But , it stillthat you must have pr ope r "filters"

n your skin as well. Yet, where does onein the search for proper skin care?

"I start from the inside ou t," says TerriWalsh , creator of Active-Beau ty, a naturaland organic skin care line. "T he better youea t, the better you r skin will be.". Th is means drinking plenty of wate r soyour skin doesn't dehydrate, staying awayfrom sugar that dries you out, letting go ofthose nasty (and expensive) smoking habits, and consuming large portions of fiberto help keep you regular.

As for the products you place on top ofthe skin, starting with a grea t nighttimeregimen is key.

D r. Colbeit admits that, "People tend toforget abo ut B5 gel," which contains hyaluronic acid, the bo dy's na tu ral hydrator, and help s bind moisture to the skin. "It'sthe strongest moisturi zer in the world ."

In the morning, however, it's importantto go light. Star t your day with a tone r andcleanser, like Walsh's Pumpkin Face Scrub, first.

    T hen , when adding a moisturizer, "don'tuse anything too heavy," says ma ke-up ar tist Robin Narvaez of Salon Eliut Riverawho has w k with such c l b i t i e s \ l

Robert De Niro , and Hillary and ChelseaClinton."Don't use the same kind you 'd use inth e winter," she explains. "Clogged poresin this weather can be produ ce blackheadswithin days."

Walsh loves shea bu tter as a moisturizerwhile Narvaez recommen ds Oil of Ol ayComplete because it contains no filters orfra grances, and has an SP F of 15. "Whatever moisturiz er you use," warns Narvaez,"make sure it has an SPF of at least 15."

As for using a sunblock withou t a moisturizer, try someth ing with an SPF of atleast 30. And if you play sports, or you'respending time on the beach, make sure towear a non-water-soluble sunblock, whichwill stay on even after you' ve been in thewater.

And make sure to re-apply sunblock frequently, says Dr. Lisa Aira n, a top der matologist who has appe ared on Oprah. Everytwo hours is a good measure.

"But, remem ber that an 8-ounce bottleis only good for eight applications ," shewar ns.
