A Bed and Breakfast (often abbreviated to B&B,B and B, BnB or BB) is an accommodation typethat really just modernizes the age-old, world-widepractice of travellers staying at a private residenceor boarding house, often with a full breakfastincluded.

The host family's local knowledge is often atremendous asset in ensuring a rewarding stay.Typically there are just a few rooms and personalcontact is much greater than in a hotel or motel set-ting. Sometimes the B&B is a converted old statelyresidence with the owner's family acting as staff.Bed and breakfast travelling has a loyal following asmany find that they get a "home away from home"experience, often with better value than with hotelor motel stays.

AmenitiesIn developed countries today, providing deluxe

bed and breakfasts has been raised to a sortof art-form. At the top end, B&Bs obviouslycompete mainly on two main things: beddingand breakfast. Accordingly, at the finest suchestablishments one is apt to find the mostluxurious bedding, maybe a handmade quiltor an antique bed. Breakfast may includeseasonal delights of the region or the host'sspeciality dish. Breakfast might be served inbed. The setting might be an historic oldbuilding with antique furnishings, manicuredgrounds and a swimming pool.

On the other hand, almost anyone can setup a spare room and provide a breakfast.Especially where lodging is not regulated, anything is possible. Indeed, some travellersmight find an inexpensive basic, clean roomand bed to be the best value for them. Manyof the same advantages could apply--such asconvenient location and good hosts sharingknowledge of the locale.

A wide range of amenities may be provid-ed. B&Bs may offer workshops on cooking, crafts, or wellness. Packages for theatre, golf, dinner, tours or adventure tours are some-times offered.

Showers and WC's may be shared withother guests or "en-suite"--directly accessedfrom the room and private.

Choosing a bed and breakfastSomewhere in Thyme - Ohio, USASome consid-

erations when choosing are:• What are you getting? While many B&Bs are

luxurious, they range all the way to sub-bar-gain. Find out what you can expect. What bedsizes are available? Are the pillows foam ordown? Is the bathroom shared? What is thebreakfast selection like and is it included inthe price?

• Location, location, location. Research thearea first. Is the location convenient to theattractions of the area? If you will be usingpublic transportation, is it nearby? Is theneighbourhood safe and aesthetically pleas-ing?

• Pets. Do the hosts have pets? Dogs and catsare not uncommon. Are guest pets welcome?

• Children. If you are bringing any, make surethey are welcome. If you don't want anyaround, make sure they are not.

• Non-smoking (or smoking) rooms? Is it a smokefree environment?

• Ask if your special dietary needs can be accom-modated.

• Are advance reservations required? What is thecancellation policy?

• What are the check-in/check-out times?

Typically B&Bs have a stricter policy than ahotel.

• Is there a minimum stay?

UnderstandUsually, a Bed & Breakfast is owned and man-

aged by an individual. If you cannot speak to some-one you know who has visited there, visit first, or acall to the owner would be a good idea. Ask aboutthe property, and the kind of visitor they normallyattract. Some offer "specialities", like horse back rid-ing, gourmet dining, and weddings. Some cater toolder people, sexual preferences, or other niches. They will appreciate your call and likely send youinformation on their facility and the area. Don't beshy, ask your questions.

Offerings for Bed & Breakfasts vary from castlesto inexpensive rooms close to fishing or huntingcamps. All of the furnishings and at times, sportequipment provided, are the property of thelodging owner. In these times of digital photog-raphy, it is not uncommon for the owner to pho-tographically inventory the room prior to youroccupancy. Make sure anything you removefrom the room or property is in plain sightbefore leaving. This will prevent the items beingbilled to your credit card. You do not want to pay$350.00 for that cute 18th century ashtray.

It can be a daunting task to find the rightquality of accommodation when browsingthrough the hundreds of area bed and break-fast websites. Thankfully there are some short-cuts through the blurb and confusion to simpli-fy your choice. Firstly, it is a fair rule of thumb tostate that a website reflects its business:exhibiting the qualities likely to be found in thebed and breakfast or hotel. On their websiteyou should expect to see: a website availabilitycalendar with easy online reservations, a toll-free telephone service, and ample easy-to-nav-igate information. A little “reading between thelines” will tell you a great deal and help youmake the right quality choices for your vacationor break to ensure that your expectations arefully met.

If the thought of lounging on a beach for a weekisn't exactly your idea of a memorable vacation, thenyou may enjoy more activity in your recreational pur-suits.

Many individuals and families brainstorm their get-aways well in advance of taking a trip.
