Most summer camps typically filltheir rosters long before the firstsigns of spring, so now is the timefor parents to begin their search andfind the right fit for their child! Whenseeking a summer camp, parentsshould consider the following:

CAMP STAFF: The staff willplay a crucial role in how much yourchild enjoys himself over the sum-mer. A qualified staff is adept atmaking all children feel welcome, and will be experienced in makingeveryone's time at camp as enjoy-able as possible.

When speaking with camps, askabout staff and how the staff isassembled. What education andtraining is required of the staff?Does the camp run criminal back-ground checks on its staff? A goodstaff will be trained in first aid andhave some type of background inchild counseling or education.Camps that simply hire kids lookingfor summer jobs should be avoided. The American Camp Association(ACA) recommends that 80% of acamp's staff should be 18 or older.

If you'relooking for a sports camp, askabout affiliations with any local col-leges or professional teams. If it's amusical camp, ask about what yourchild can expect to learn from staff.

CONSIDER CAMP SCHEDULE: While some camps might be specialized, most parentssend their children to recreational camps that they hope offer their kids a well-rounded experience. Askto see the schedule from a typical day, and ask about how flexible that schedule is. Will kids be able tochoose from different activities each day, or is every day regimented? Remember, kids will be spend-ing their summer vacations at camp, and for many kids camp is an opportunity to relax and spend some

time doing what they want. Camps that feature strict schedules might not be the best fit.(...continued on page 31)

LOOK INTOREFERRALS:

While summer camps aren't necessarily as popular as theyonce were, chances are some of your child's classmatesattend camp in the summer. Ask around and seek someadvice on summer camps in your area. If you're lucky, youmight even be able to send your child to a summer camp thatsome of his classmates also attend, which should make it eas-ier for your child to adapt to camp, especially if it's a first sum-mer away from home. If you can't find any personal referrals, ask a camp for a list of references. These references shouldn't weigh too heavily in your decision, as a campdirector is obviously not going to give you names of parents whose children didn't have a good time. But theparents should be able to provide an accurate portrayal of how the camp conducts itself and how your childmight fare should he attend that camp. To learn more about what to lookfor in a camp, visit the ACA Web site at www.acacamps.org.
