Did you know that the War of the Roses (the fight over proper succession of the monarchy) inspired the Game of Thrones? Did you know as Henry VIII grew older, he put on a massive amount of weight? Suits of armor showed that his waistline, which had measured 32 inches in 1512, grew to 54 inches; Henry weighed nearly 400 pounds when he died in 1547. I Am Malala —by Malala Yousafzai— Sometimes reading books is more than entertainment or an exercise in literary analysis. Sometimes reading a book changes your view on the world. Sometimes a book can even change your life by showing you your own prejudices that you had not realized were there. I Am Malala is this type of book. Malala Yousafzai’s memoir is about her fight for Pakistani girls’ right to an education. This fight led her to become a champion of all girls throughout the world who are denied an

education simply based on their gender. This book is important for new generations to read so that we learn to see every culture, not just Muslims, in a different light from how they are portrayed by the media. Malala shows us the courage and pride beneath her hijab and challenges us to see her as a role model instead of a victim.

Her book speaks for people all over the world promoting change. She wants us to see that people are powerful even when faced by something as oppressive as the Taliban. -- Written by Josie Douglass-Lafer, RHS Student Librarian

Play the “I am the King” game in the library. Correctly match the “Kings” to the right person, and get put into the drawing for a Starbucks gift card. Students and teachers are eligible to play!
