From the President

The 2016-2017 League year was the “Year of Opportunity.” As League President, I was honored to represent the nearly 1,600 highly professional, community-minded, committed women who work to make Wake County a better place. Our first opportunity was within our League, as we implemented a new governance structure recommended by AJLI (Association of Junior Leagues International). We established a Board of Directors led by the President and a Management Council, led by the Executive Vice President. We had the opportunity to host North Carolina’s first, and hopefully only, “Snow Ball,” when inclement weather consolidated the plans for the 2017 Governor’s Inaugural Ball. We followed with another reception in the spring for the guests unable to make the combined Inaugural Ball events. Funds raised from the Inaugural Ball allowed us to make a significant contribution to SAFEchild, an organization chartered by our League to “Stop Abuse for Every Child.” We had opportunity with our long-standing fundraiser, A Shopping SPREE!, which raised significant funds and allowed us to provide $5,000 grants to Haven House’s Outreach Center, Transitions LifeCare and Carroll’s Kitchen. Our second annual Touch-a-Truck event was also a great success, with many families in attendance and the proceeds were used to expand our BackPack Buddies Program. Our members volunteered over 21,000 hours, serving women and children, including packing BackPack Buddies meals for children to take home on weekends when food may be scarce, tutoring elementary and middle school children and raising their confidence through one-on-one homework help, providing clothing at the Bargain Box in Cameron Village for those whom are lacking essentials, and leading therapeutic horseback riding programs for children with disabilities. Our League expanded our reach into the community by adding new partnerships with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and InterAct. We focused on the development of women with our award-winning Capital Leadership Initiative. We hosted our fourth annual Empowering Women Conference, providing personal and professional development strategies for the participants. We partnered with AJLI to host its Organizational Development Institute in Raleigh in October, which had over 300 women participate from Junior Leagues worldwide. From our volunteer opportunities, to our fundraisers, to our commitment to leadership training, this was the Year of Opportunity for the Junior League of Raleigh. I am so proud of all the women who made an impact in our community. #jlrimpact

While a substantial part of our efforts directly impact members of the community, we also partner with other agencies to help with their community efforts. The strength and size of the League’s membership also allows us to support other agencies with their own projects. JLR’s Quick Impact team provides hands-on help to other community agencies with short-term projects or events. Also, JLR board members are available to provide leadership and guidance to other community agency boards. Not all community groups have dedicated meeting and training space. To fill that need, the Julia Jones Daniels Center for Community Leadership, the League’s headquarters, is available for public use by other nonprofits and organizations. Meeting and training space is available at reasonable rates.
