behind this Feeding Miracle. Remember the deeper meaning behind the sharing of a meal with someone in Jesus’ time and for people even today. To share a meal means to share one’s life with those dinning with you. All those people who Jesus fed shared their lives with Christ (their strengths and weaknesses) and He in turn shared His life with them-His Divine Life with them feed-ing them, changing them, and freeing them! Again Jesus does this for us weekly and daily in the celebration of the Eucharist. So come, and invite others (especially those who refuse to hear the invitation) to the Supper of the Lord and receive the very best-Jesus the Bread of Life. Today speaking at all of the Masses will be Sister Rosemary Hayes from the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus who has been a missionary in Africa for over 21 years. Sister will be speaking about her experiences and how we can help her and her order in their work. A second collec-tion will be taken up right after the 1st Collection at the Offertory time-please be as generous as you can. Starting next Monday Evening and the following Mondays of August we will pray the Rosary on the Rectory Lawn starting at 7PM. Join the members of our parish family for these evenings of prayer, the word of God, hymns, and fellowship, so bring a chair, blanket, a dessert and yourself-in case of rain we will move everything into the Church. Tuesday August 15th is the Solemnity of the As-sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven and it is a holy day of obligation. The Mass Schedule is Monday Evening August 14th at 7:30 PM, Tuesday 7 AM, 9AM, 12:10 PM, 5PM & 7:30 PM. Please note that for the Rosary on The Lawn for Monday the 14th, we will begin at 7 PM on the Lawn and then move to the Church for Mass at 7:30-fellowship to follow in the Church Lobby after the Mass. Also on Monday August 7th from 3:30-9 PM we will have our Annual Parish Blood Drive in Carew Hall. Please help with the gift of life by giving a pint of blood to those in need-especially during the summer months there is always a shortage of blood-so please help if you can!

God bless you always. Fr. Mike

A very special thank you to all who volunteered, spon-sored and supported the Parish Festival. Also thank you to those who sponsored booths or nights, but were not business, and there are three good examples of this. They are: Msgr. Midura, Barbara Mickelson, and Evelyn Batt. All give of their time and talent as well as their sponsoring entertainment and other parts of the summer festival.

During this year, from the 1st Sunday of Advent 2005 to the Feast of Christ the King this coming Nov. 26th, we

are in Lectionary Cycle B the Gospel of Mark. However, if you have noticed, the Gospel of Mark is also the shortest, and when the Council Fathers of The Second Vatican Coun-cil put the Lectionary together they were not completely sure what to do with the shortness of Mark’s Gospel and how do we include the Gospel of John. They debated as to whether or not to give John his own year creating a 4 year cycle instead of the 3 year cycle we now have, and then how do we get Mark’s Gospel to go from Advent to Ad-vent? Their solution was to not give John his own year, but to have the Gospel of John read during the Seasons of Lent and Easter. Also it would be inserted during the summer of Mark’s Cycle to help us hear all four gospels. This Sunday we begin hearing John’s Gospel with the accounts from the Bread of Life Discourse following to-day’s miracle of the Loaves and the Fish. We just saw this reading during Lent so it may be very familiar to you this year. But during Lent we did not have the same 1st Reading that we have today about the miracle of the Prophet Elisha-who fed 100 people with 20 loaves. Like Jesus, Elisha has to feed a great number of people with what surely can not be enough, yet with the prophet’s belief in God’s power, he knew that there would be more than enough. Jesus, of course, feeds over 5000 with far less, 5 loaves and 2 fish which shows a far greater power at work, for someone far greater is carrying out the miracle. The Gospel tells us that after Jesus performed this miracle the people wanted to make Him king. Why, because what Jesus did, reminded them of a tradition that the Messiah would feed the people like Moses did during the Exodus and like Elisha did in his miracle of the loaves and thus they declared He should be made king. Why does Jesus run away? That’s simple; if Jesus accepts the crown from them they would be defining the Messiah’s role and causing Jesus to be a political rival to Rome. Jesus has no intention of setting up a political kingdom, only the Kingdom of God. He is not concerned about Rome and its taxes; no He is concerned with spiritual life and freedom, and the destruction of sin’s slavery and death. This is seen in this miracle for those who look at it through spiritual eyes. As you may know, this miracle in John’s Gospel truly represents the Eucharist and how Jesus feeds us with His Body and Blood. That crowd was huge and I’m sure very diverse with people from every walk of life. Some were rich, and some were poor. Some were very holy and some were sinners who might have been seeking out Jesus for forgiveness of sins, redemption, and a new life. Christ called them all to Himself, as He continues to call all of us to the new life-through the meal of His Body and His Blood! There is also another part of the Spiritual Meaning

CAN YOU HELP US? After many years of use the sacred vessels (called ciboria) which are used during Mass to distribute Our Lord in Holy Communion have become worn and discolored. RESPECT LIFE “These boys and girls are not spare parts. They remind us what is lost when embryos are destroyed in the name of research.” So said President Bush as he used his veto power to

block an expansion of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. He said the veto will discourage research that involves destruction of human embryos to extract the stem cells that some believe will cure debilitating diseases. But, as he said, “This bill would support the taking of innocent hu-man life in the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our society needs to respect.” The House of Representatives failed to override the veto. Newsday, 7/20/06 According to the June 2006 issue of American Life News’ Judie Brown, the Life Center of Long Island is preparing to launch a radio ad campaign on a station that reaches over 350,000 listeners, over 70 percent of whom are female and the majority of whom are under the age of 44. The Life Cen-ter hopes to reach even more abortion-minded women and bring them to the center. Let us hope that this campaign is successful. The Life Center of Long Island welcomes volun-teers. For more information & locations call 243-2373.

Too bad…in the final days of the 2006 Legislative Ses-sion, legislation designed to promote and facilitate the public banking of umbilical cord blood, died a quiet death in the Assembly Rules Committee. The bill, A.457-A (Lentol)/ S.5999-A) DeFrancisco) which had passed the Senate in March, had been in the Assembly Rules Committee since June 6 and had picked up an additional 29 Assembly spon-sors, and bipartisan support appeared to be growing. In the final hours of this Session the bill never came to the floor for a vote. Contact your Assembly member and let him/her know that this is a high priority for you. The address is: Honorable -------------------, NYS Assembly, Legislative Office Build-ing, Albany, NY 12248. The benefits of having your new baby’s cord blood saved is like having auto or homeowner’s insurance – you get it and pay for it hoping you’ll never need it, but – how wonderful to have it if you do need it. Please call your Asssemblyperson now. The Suffolk County Board of Elections can help you with a name. PREGNANCY CRISIS HOTLINE -We are here to help you. Please call 981-6888.

Reverend Michael T. Maffeo St. Joseph Church 45 Church Street Ronkonkoma, NY 11779 Dear Father Maffeo: Congratulations and many thanks! Your parish has reached its Catholic Ministries Appeal goal in pledges. A goal of $74,800 and a reported pledge total of $76,239 is a wonderful tribute to you and your parishioners. Thank you for your dedication to this important initiative. As you know, due to your parish’s special efforts you will share 80% of the funds raised in excess of your goal. Additionally, if the number of gifts over $50 increases by at least 10%, your parish receives an even greater share of the over goal funds. I am deeply grateful to your parishioners for their generosity, which is directly supporting important ministries in your parish as well as throughout the diocese. I sincerely thank you and your team for everything you have done to support the work of the church on Long Island. Sharing Our Time and Talents

Altar servers perform most of the functions of the former "minor order" of ordained clerics known as acolytes (from the Greek word akolouthos or 'attendant'). Church writings from the second and third centuries discuss the role of acolytes, giving the office great importance and honor in the history of the Church. Altar servers today are not ordained, but are 'commissioned' by their parish priest.

The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. This is done through specific actions and by setting an example to the congre-gation by active participation in the liturgy (hymns, responses, etc.), by 'looking alert' and by sitting or standing at the appropriate times. If you are in the 4th grade or higher and would like to become an altar server, please contact Fr Rene at the rectory.

EVANGELIZATION GROUP

We have recently formed an “Evangelization Group”. This group will reflect on our baptismal com-mitment in the light of the Gospel. Our baptismal commitment should inspire us to share our faith and enkindle in others the need for living the faith. The group will act as a catalyst to put the Spirit back into the life of the parish. Though everyone in the parish will be involved in this task at a later stage, we need a core group to initiate the process. If you are willing to share your time for the bene-fit of the parish, we invite you to join the Evangelization group. Kindly call Fr Thomas at the rec-tory to leave your name and number.

Even Used Inkjet Cartridges, Have Their Uses

We have found a way to help St Joseph and keep those com-plicated pieces of plastic, metal and printed circuit boards out of the land fill. Drop them off (in a plastic baggie) when you come to mass. We will send them to a company who reuses them and gives the parish a bounty for each. One note, to clear confusion, if it is larger than a fist, it is not an inkjet cartridge!!!
