As a parish family, we worked together to bring the joyous spirit of Christmas to the residents of Covenant House and Bergen Regional Medical Center. Through our joint efforts with Catholic Charities and Our Lady of Fatima Parish of North Bergen we were able to touch the lives of 15 individual families in the Hudson County area. That is 81 individual children and their parents who experienced the joy and magic of Christmas through your generosity. In total, 301 clothing items were given, with an additional 22 gift cards amounting to $550. Happiness was brought to many of the children by the 93 toys and books that were delivered to their homes. Yes, gifts on Christmas morning are wonderful, but in reality, these families need help to take care of their basic everyday needs. Your outpouring of concern for others and the Christ like generosity of this parish was demonstrated by the $1,250 worth of grocery store gift certificates that were donated. THE PASTOR’S COLUMN

BE SURE TO SAY "THANK YOU"

One of the things that I learned from my parents, which has stayed with me, is the importance of saying "thank you." When someone gave me a gift or did something nice for me, my mother or father would

ask me, "Now Tommy, what are you supposed to say?" And of course, the response was "Thank you!"

I am certain your parents taught you the same thing, and I am sure that you who are Moms or Dads are teaching your children the very same thing.

Saying "thank you" is also something we learn from our Catholic Faith. We learn to thank God for all the blessings we have received. In fact, the Mass, our highest form of worship, reaches its highpoint in the Eucharistic Prayer, it's our great proclamation of praise and thanks to God. That prayer begins with the priest saying "Let us give thanks to the Lord our God," and the congregation responding with "It is right to give Him thanks and praise."

So it is only right that I use this column to express my gratitude and thanks to God and to all those who helped make this Christmas Season, which ends today with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, such a beautiful experience.

DONORS Thank you to all those whose donations helped to defray the cost of the decorations that enhanced the beauty of our upper and lower church during this Christmas Season. The names of those whose gifts were given as memorial donations or for special intentions appear in this bulletin. Additional names will be in next Sunday's bulletin.

Your donations also helped to provide appropriate decorations for the lower school gym. As you may know, we had three simultaneous Masses at 5 pm on Christmas Eve, namely, in the upper church, in the lower church, and in the gym. And we needed all three. We had more than 450 people in the gym (or as we renamed it for the occasion, Saint Jim's).

DECORATORS & CLEANERS Thank you to those who put the Christmas decorations in place, in particular, Father Raul and his trusted helpers – Mark Alleman, Joseph Cangelosi, Martin DeBenedetto, Irene Galvan, and William Morrow.

Thank you to the many volunteers who worked with Father Raul in the days before Christmas to clean the church. A clean church proclaims that people care about the building that is their spiritual home and that even more importantly they care about their brothers and sisters in Christ who gather there for prayer.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS Thank you to the liturgical ministers of the parish – our readers, ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers,

leaders of song, choir members, musicians, and ushers, and of course my fellow priests, for exercising their different ministries with reverence and devotion. They helped us all to experience the presence of Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament.

I would especially like to express my thanks to Monroe Quinn, our new Director of Music, who began here just six weeks

ago. He came on board at one of the busiest times of the year and he did a wonderful job in providing us with beautiful music that encouraged us to sing out the songs of Christmas.

THOSE IN THE PEWS Thank you to all those who joined us for the Masses of Christmas. While those I mentioned above are important, the most important ministry is that exercised by the assembly, by those in the pews. The way you prayed, participated, and shared your faith is what truly brought the liturgies of Christmas to life. As I often say, "the power is in the pews!"

Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Christmas here at St. Joseph Parish. On a personal note, I would to express my gratitude to all of you for making my first Christmas as your pastor such a happy and faith-filled experience. Being with you was my Christmas gift from the Lord!

Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

LITURGICAL MINISTRY

The Baptism of the Lord

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, "I need to

be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus

said to him in reply, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him. - Mt 3:13-
