EASTER SUNDAY THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD ~ APRIL 21, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Easter, the supreme feast of our religion, is about the resurrection both as it applies to Jesus and to us. When we are baptized we

already begin to share in the death and resurrection of the Lord through the gift of sanctifying grace, the life of faith, hope and charity that God wants us to develop all through our time on earth. And then, throughout eternity, we are meant to experience a wondrous transformation that promotes us, in our spiritual and bodily reality, to the fulfillment of life with God in Heaven. St. Augustine’s massive book The City of God, one of the greatest works of Catholicism and of Western Civilizatiion, has a passage that highlights this meaning of Easter masterfully:

… there are two regenerations, … the one according to faith, and which takes in the present life by means of baptism; the other according to the flesh, and which shall be accomplished in its incorruption and immortality by means of the great and final judgment—so are there also two resurrections—the one the first and spiritual resurrection, which has place in this life, and preserves us from coming into the second death; the other the second, which does not occur now, but in the end of the world, and which is of the body, not of the soul, and which by the last judgment shall dismiss some into the second death, others into that life which has no death.

And so, Easter is about both a delightful future prospect that cannot be surpassed and about the strong challenge and joy of living in God’s ways. Jesus reminded us of this second reality in his parable of the barren fig tree (in Lk 13, 6-9), with its insistence that God expects us to produce good fruits with the gifts he has given us. St. Cyril of Jerusalem, whose writings have an important place in the Church’s Easter reflections, has reminded us that

It is for God, then, to plant and water but for you to bear fruit; for God to give his grace but for you to receive and preserve it.

Pope Paul VI, who was recently raised to the ranks of the saints, once noted something that is at the heart of our Easter joy:

The Lord’s Resurrection is not an isolated fact, it is a fact that concerns the whole of mankind; from Christ it extends to the world; it has a cosmic importance … the source of meaning of the human drama, the solution to the problem of evil, the origin of a new form of life, to which we give the name of Christianity.

May all of you have a joyous Easter.

Msgr. David Hubba

As we watch more and more parishes struggle in these difficult economic times, we want you to know that we are working diligently to keep Saint Joseph strong and able to continue to do the Lord’s work. But we can only succeed if we have your help. Please prayerfully consider giving back to the Lord a portion of what has been given to you.
